Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

You've all been awaiting and I will not defend my selections. It's based on stats + gut + tv viewing (which is more than the 'experts')....the All Red Dog team (in no partitcular order besides POTY):

Evan Turner, Ohio State...Player of the Year
Jimmer Fredette, BYU
DeMarcus Cousins, UK
Scottie Reynolds, Villanova
James Anderson, OK St.

Coach of the Year....so many contenders.....Gary Williams, Tony Barbie to name a few...but it comes down to 2: Jim Boeheim vs. Steve Alford. The consensus was that Cuse would make the tourney with what they had coming back. Amazing what Boeheim did this year...don't want to diminish that, however, few picked New Mexico to make the field let alone be a high seed (projected 3-seed), so I have to go with Alford.

So, does St. Mary's make it with yet another loss to Gonzaga (assuming both make it)?

BTW, agreed on POTY. I think he will win most of the National awards. He's a freak, meant in the best way possible.

Of course you have.

I know UK fans salivate over Wall....it's just my way of emphasizing who their best player really is. It's also notice to whom I think the best team is (note: no players in my top-5).

You think the best team is Bucknell....no Maryland....no G'Town....no Miami. That's it, the Canes.

Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

Update from Lunardi:

Editor's note: This was done overnight between Sunday and Monday.

My Current No. 1 Seeds
Midwest: Kansas Jayhawks
South: Syracuse Orange
East: Kentucky Wildcats
West: Duke Blue Devils

The first time I filed last night -- before the Duke versus UNC game was truly over, although in some ways it was already over -- I had Kansas State out west as the No. 1. Now I have Duke there again. Depending on the ACC and Big East tournaments, that should remain the case.

The biggest change since Sunday afternoon/evening is this: I've moved Wake Forest to "lock" status after its win over Clemson. That should get the ACC five teams, behind seven from the Big 12 and six from the Big East.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Automatic Qualifiers

Cornell Big Red (Ivy League)

Winthrop Eagles (Big South)

East Tennessee State Buccaneers (Atlantic Sun)

Murray State Racers (Ohio Valley)

Northern Iowa Panthers (Missouri Valley)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current "Locks" (34 teams)

Locks (34 teams)

Big 12 (7): Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, Baylor Bears, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Longhorns, Missouri Tigers, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Big East (6): Syracuse Orange, Villanova Wildcats, West Virginia Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Panthers, Georgetown Hoyas, Louisville Cardinals

ACC (5): Duke Blue Devils, Maryland Terrapins, Clemson Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Big Ten (4): Purdue Boilermakers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan State Spartans

Atlantic 10 (3): Temple Owls, Xavier Musketeers, Richmond Spiders

SEC (3): Kentucky Wildcats, Vanderbilt Commodores, Tennessee Volunteers

Mountain West (3): New Mexico Lobos, Brigham Young Cougars, UNLV Rebels

Horizon League (1): Butler Bulldogs

Pac-10 (1): California Golden Bears

West Coast (1): Gonzaga Bulldogs

Additional automatic qualifiers: 16 conferences.

TOTAL SPOTS CLAIMED: 55

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bubble (21 teams for 10 spots)

Currently In (listed in S-curve order): Marquette Golden Eagles, Virginia Tech Hokies, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Florida Gators, Saint Mary's Gaels, Memphis Tigers, Arizona State Sun Devils, San Diego State Aztecs, Illinois Fighting Illini

Currently Out (listed in S-curve order): Washington Huskies, Seton Hall Pirates, Rhode Island Rams, Mississippi Rebels, Dayton Flyers, UAB Blazers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Wichita State Shockers, South Florida Bulls, Connecticut Huskies

Off The Board: Cincinnati Bearcats

First Four Out: Washington, Rhode Island, Dayton, Ole Miss

Last Four In: Memphis, Arizona State, San Diego State, Illinois

I have to respectfully disagree, as it doesn't get interesting for me til the Regionals. I love College B-Ball, but the Final 64 really renders the regular season and the conference tournaments in many way irrelevant. Most mid-majors have zero shot, except a George Mason every 10 years. As long as you get to the final 64, that's all that really matters for the big schools, and it usually ends up that the #1 and #2 seeds will be in the final four.

I honestly start following it when they hit the regional finals, because that is when the powerhouse schools meet and you start to see who is has the best shot at winning the national championship. The regular season, the conference tournaments, and the first weekend of March Madness, way over-hyped, IMO.

48 elimination games in the first weekend is the best 4 days in sports.

Looking at Lunardi's update posted above...I thought he had Marquette as a lock previously? No big deal, but seems like it should be impossible to fall out of 'lock' status.

I think that's just a matter of where he has them on the S-Curve (unlike Bubble Watch, which I think takes a slightly different definition of "lock"). He's listing 21 teams for 10 spots, and they're at the top of that 21. One spot higher on the S-Curve and they would've been in his lock category.

Would take a lot of machinations that are wholly unlikely to happen for Marquette to fall off under his scenario.

I respect that

I guess I am just saying, who really cares if Syracuse wins the Big East Tournament this weekend? We all know they are going to get a #1 seed, so thats my whole problem with the lead-up to the Final 64, these games this weekend are for a few bubble teams and maybe a different seeding here and there for a few other teams.

All of this is just a huge money grab for the Conferences, but it really won't change anything when it comes to seedings come Sunday. And in saying that, if Syracuse is a #1 or #2 seed, does that really matter?

Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

I find the non-major conference tourneys far more exciting. Also the bubble movement that takes place this week is more interesting to me than ultimate outcome of the major conference tournaments (unless you have an outlier advance to a title game). I've never been more nervous watching a sporting event than the Bucknell title games over the years. It's basically do or die (maybe not for '06 though).

Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

If Syracuse loses their first game or 2nd game in the BET, and if Duke, Kentucky and Kansas St. all win their tournaments, I could see them left out as a #1 seed with the above and Kansas being the 4 #1 seeds. It doesn't really matter to me what seed Syracuse has, just hopefully they'll be playing good ball come tourney time....

Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

I don't think that would be the case, and almost certainly not from K State after their loss this weekend. I think only WVU or OSU could steal a #1 at this point, and that doesn't happen unless Dook loses in the ACC Tournament and they both win their own.

I think we have it wrapped up already. Right now it's just a matter of where we end up on the S-Curve. If we beat USF or Georgetown in the BET Quarterfinals, we're likely at least #3. If we lose in the quarters, we're likely going to be #4 and have the difficult 2-seed.

I can't see the 'cuse losing their #1 seed at this point either. Dook is almost there, but a poor showing in the ACC tourney opens it up for tOSU. K-State is a solid 2.

Re: College Hoops, March 8-14 **Championship Week**

The 2 seed line this year is going to be murderous with K State, and 2 of OSU/Dook/WVU. Purdue would seem to be the only weak link there.
