2010 Winter Olympic Games
10 Days to go for the start of the 2010 Olympic Games. Has anyone found a good PDF of the TV Schedule yet. How about any Iphone/Ipod apps?

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
As has been custom the last few Olympics, the general rule has been to spoiler tag results that have not yet aired on U.S. ET/CT television. I hope we can continue this. Yes, I know this still fucks the west coasters. Blame NBC, not me.
I'll (or if one of the hockey fans wants to do it) also probably start a separate thread for Olympic Hockey since I think that's all aired live and can stand on its on as a discussion thread.
Here's a US TV schedule from USA Today:

I wish the Olympics would just go away. It is 2 weeks of sports that nobody ever watches, except Hockey and Track and B-Ball in the Summer games.
The Olympics were cool during the Cold War and as an American, you had an enemy in the Soviet Union to root against, but now they are just plain boring. I am suprised it still gets the high ratings it does, oh well, I guess I'm in the minority on this one.

I think he means stuff like skiing and swimming is not watched except once every 4 years. And while that's true for the U.S., it's not true in Europe and other areas.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
I would assume that even on the West Coast they would air whatever is live right? Since it's the same timezone as when it's actually happening? Or am I wrong Red?

You are wrong. Yes, it's bizarre. Same deal happened in '02 in SLC.
Now whatever is aired on the cable networks (mostly hockey and curling) should all be on at the same time.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
FYI - New format this year for hockey...
3 Groups of 4 teams, round-robin
Group A: CAN USA SUI NOR
Group B: RUS CZE SLV LAT
Group C: SWE FIN BLR GER
3 points for a regulation win, 2 for an OT/Shootout win, 1 for OT/SO loss, 0 for regulation loss
Teams will be ranked 1-12 following the round-robin. Group winners will be 1-3, 2nd place finishers 4-6, and so on. 1-4 get a bye to the quarterfinals. 5-12 meet in the "secondary round" to advance to the quarterfinals - best plays worst (12 vs 5, 11 vs 6, etc). Teams are re-seeded each round so that the best always plays the worst, based on the preliminary round rankings.
Tiebreakers for 1-12 ranking:
1 - Placement in Group
2 - Higher number of points
3 - Better goal differential
4 - More goals scored
5 - 2009 IIHF World Ranking (1/RUS 2/CAN 3/SWE 4/FIN 5/USA 6/CZE 7/SUI 8/BLR 9/SLV 10/LAT 11/NOR 12/GER)

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
Just curious, if we're not going to wait until everyone can see it, why bother waiting at all? It's not like a TV show where you can just avoid coming into the thread until the show in question airs, I'd like to be able to read and participate in the discussion of things that have aired on the West Coast, but under this system I pretty much can't read the thread until the end of the night. Why not either spoiler tag all results or no results?

What can I tell you? It's the way we've done it before and generated the least objection.
Either way you're not going to read the thread until after midnight ET, so does it really make a difference?
Honestly, with the way NBC does it, I'll probably just record primetime each night and start watching it 2 hours after it starts (so I can skip through all the stuff I don't care for and commercials), so I probably won't be in the thread much during primetime weeknights (except for hockey which I plan on doing a separate thread for).

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
I do sometimes browse the thread when I'm watching the prime-time coverage when something particularly exciting happens so that I can discuss it, I do my best to skim posts to avoid other results but it's obviously not a perfect system.
Ultimately I can understand and accept the fact that we're not going to tag what's airing on the East Coast for the benefit of the West Coasters, I'm just not sure why we're tagging anything in that case.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
Honestly, if I have to spoiler tag every post between 8 and midnight, I won't bother posting much, if at all, here because I am going to inevitably forget to do it sometimes.
We've had this debate before. I don't see any need to change it now. It was a compromise, not perfect, obviously. But I'm only one voice.
As I said, the cable stuff is not an issue - it's on at the same time everywhere, and it's mostly live hockey (some curling) anyhow.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
We get all of NBC's live coverage on tape delay. We used to get a great deal in Seattle though because we'd get CBC's live-live coverage, but CTV carries the Olympics in Canada now and we don't get that here.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
I was thumbing through the Wikipedia pages about the upcoming games in 2012 and beyond, and I found a blatantly fake entry:
2020 Summer Olympics
2020 Summer Olympics
Potential Bids
Victoria, Canada - Although Vancouver, British Columbia, has a better chance of getting it Victoria has constantly bid, The last bid so far being 125.7 Million and also public buildings that could be possible used, such as a swimming pool, a shooting range, a field (for volleyball, field hockey, soccer, tug of war), a baseball field, and a tennis court. Also there are other major sports locations around the city.

Re: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
Victoria is noce, but I didn't actually explore much of the island. I don't know if they would even have anything close to the capacity for an Olympics.
