Re: MLB Tuesday June 16, 2009

The Nationals bring that stellar 6-23 road record into the New Yankee stadium. Meanwhile, the regional rivalry of Tampa Bay and Colorado continues... Let's go inter-league play!

I actually like interleague play. I just find the marketing for the matchups funny. "Remember 25 years ago when these teams matched up in the World Series... now we can get revenge!" It amuses me.

Well when the Yanks played the Pirates a year or two ago, they were bringing up the Bill Mazeroski HR and the 1960 WS. The Yankee bandwagoneers had a look of on their faces.

Fun night for me last night. Had 4 fantasy players going for me:

Braun: 3/5, 4 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 STL
Fielder: 2/3, 1 R, 1 HR, 6 RBI
Sandoval: 3/5, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Hoffman: SV

It amazes me that only 7 teams have a road record over .500. If this was the NBA I'd bet the games were fixed.

I like interleague...the damn Braves are playing the Reds though...boring. Although it's in Cincy so maybe there will be a lot of home runs! Although I doubt if the Braves will hit any due to their anemic offense.

OH, and I'm a Braves fan by the way.

Sandoval has been such a fantasy stud all year. I only wish he picked up Catcher eligibility in my ESPN league as well.

In a 8-man keeper league, I got Hoffman in the 27th round, Sandoval in the 30th round, and Freddy Sanchez in the final round

Interleague play is the one good thing Selig has done since he has become the Commissioner. I hate the Wildcard, always hated the DH, but interleague play gives you alittle variety during the year, because it does get old seeing the same teams week in week out. I am a Phillies fan, and I am so tired of seeing the pathetic Nationals every other weekend!

2 more starts for Sandoval at catcher for ESPN eligibility. Tough to see that happening before the year is almost out.

Re: MLB Tuesday June 16, 2009

Top of the eighth. Cliff Lee has just given up his first hit of the game to the Cardinals, a double to right. Up in the booth, Joe Morgan decides to tell a story. You know where this is going.

From Sunday's game, here he is, verbatim:

I guess I can tell this story now, one of my great experiences when I was a young player. Don Wilson was pitching a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. They had Orlando Cepeda, Rico Carty, Felipe Alou and Hank Aaron, of course. And they got to the ninth inning, he got two outs, no one on base, and Hank Aaron was the hitter. And in my infinite wisdom, I ran in to the mound. I said, "You know, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Hank Aaron walked right here. He said, "Get back to second base." I proceeded to go back to second base. He threw three fastballs right by Hank Aaron. No-hitter.

Charming, right? And, alas, very likely an utter crock. This would've been June 18, 1967, Joe's third full season in the bigs. That Braves team did indeed feature Hank Aaron, Felipe Alou and Rico Carty though not Cepeda, who was in St. Louis that year. And Wilson did indeed throw a no-hitter, striking out Aaron to end the game. None of that's the problem. The problem, as a tipster points out, is that Joe Morgan wasn't playing that day. Look at the box score. The Astros' second baseman was Julio Gotay. Morgan, who was probably hurt, hadn't played since June 3. He would pinch-hit the next two games, then return to the lineup June 21.

Deadspin

Surely you jest! Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that Pudge Rodriguez losing 30-40lbs in the offseason prior to formal drug testing was not really an attempt to slim down and improve his stamina! At this point MLB needs to "accidently" leak the entire list and get all the bad news out at once.

ESPN had a fantastic graphic of the Top 6 leading HR's from 1996-2004, all but one have now been linked to PED's - Thome the only one thus far that hasn't been linked.

How many of the people who "testified" before congress have now been linked? Is it all of them (except Schilling, who completly back-pedled on his earlier steriod talk during his testimony). That "testimony" needs to be put on DVD as a comedy one day.

I've got Sandoval and Braun on my team as the only two who played. Sandoval was supposed to be a stopgap until Wieters arrived, but he's just not getting any playing time.

Mauer just might work his way up to .500 by the time the Pirates leave town.
