Regarding this...
All playoffs, I've pointed out the LA Times' love 'em when they win, hate 'me when they lose attitude. It drives me a little nuts
That's pretty much the way it goes with a lot of Laker fans in general. Just look at some of the people here

I hate it when they lose but I don't hate them. Some games you just have to move on, like the last second three by Philly in the regular season.

The playoffs, there is no moving on unless you win. So you have to be more critical.

Re: The Official 2008-2009 Los Angeles Lakers Thread pt3

Ok, so do the Lakers get favored or are the Magic favored? Is it a toss up?

This series scares me for a few reasons:

1. Like I said, Orlando is Houston and Denver combined. Threes and boards.

2. The Lakers were 0-2 vs the Celts last year, and went 0-2 vs the Magic this year.

3. Stan Van Gundy will be compared to Phil and people will say Phil has the advantage, just like Doc Rivers last year.

I think the Lakers win, but not easily.

I am calling it like this:

Game 1: Magic
Game 2: Lakers
Game 3: Lakers
Game 4: Magic
Game 5: Lakers
Game 6: Lakers

Lakers will probably be favored by a bit, especially with home court.

Orlando actually isn't as good of a rebounding team, looking at the numbers. They're only 10th out of all the playoff teams in totals, and behind the Lakers (4th). But yeah, I think the Lakers ability to defend the 3 and whether or not Dwight Howard is able to punish the Lakers bigs will be the biggest factor.

Well Bynum and Gasol had better learn to grab the boards. They can't let Dwight grab 20 boards every game, and only grab 3 or 4 themselves.

Would rather be playing the Cavs than the Magic but oh well, it is what it is. I see this series going 6-7 games easily. Orlando won both games during the regular season but that really means nothing....both of those games came down to the final minute of play.

Howard is going get his points in the paint but as long as they lock down their outside shooting, the Lakers will win this series.

I like how either way this a lose-lose for Shaq. If the Lakers win, then Kobe gets one without him. If the Magic win, then Orlando's greatest season was without Shaq. Of course, if we win just 1 game in the Finals we're better than Shaq's legacy.

Orlando also had Nelson in both games, who torched the Lakers in both games (11/16, 27 pts in the first game, 9/19, 28 pts in the second). I don't think the Rafer offers quite the same trouble on defense for the Laker point guards, so hopefully that will be a big area that will hurt the Lakers less then it did the rest of these playoffs.

I think the Lakers match up more favorably with the Cavs rather than the Magic. Still, a big factor is the 2-3-2 format. I don't like it much because for the team with home court, one slip up in the first two games and they might never see home court again, but then again it does allow the home court advantage team the final two games at home, making it much harder for the visitors to close things out if it does go at least six. Overall, I think the Lakers should be okay, but god would it be nice to take both the first two for the first time since Utah. Probably won't happen though.
I know the Lakers will be overvalued here in Vegas (they always are -- they're the de facto home team), and for the third time, I'm considering placing a bet against my favorite team. The Pistons were 8-1 long shots in 2004 and I was talked out of placing a $50 bet on them for "happiness insurance". That still kills me.

Yep its pretty much a must for the Lakers to take care of business at home and go to Orlando up 2-0. Not to say the Lakers can't win in Orlando, it just assures them they'll be back home for Game 6 & 7 should they lose 3 in Orlando.

I don't think this goes more than 6. Unlike last postseason, LA has been tested before the finals in a very tough Denver series. They have plenty of front court guys against Howard. I'm just wondering if Odom starts this series since Lewis and Turkoglu will be in the front court.

In all seriousness, ESPN "experts" are all picking the Lakers except Abbott. He was the other one that picked Denver last series.

If I recall correctly, it was the same thing last year. Only Legler (Boston homer) picked the Celts to win, and this year, a Portland homer picks them.

In the Sportsnation polls, only Florida, and NH think that Dwight's supporting cast is better than Kobe's

Arpeggi and his picks. What were his picks last year? It was Lakers in 4 over Boston, too, I think.

There was also 82-0 which hopefully was just a joke. But then he dropped a 16-1 prediction for the playoffs this year. The Lakers record so far? 12-6. That's 8-2 at home and 4-4 on the road I believe.

The Lakers couldn't sweep a team if they had brooms surgically attached to their hands.

Lakers in 6.

I read on ESPN.com that Jackson is going to use the same 5 starters from the last series (Fish, Kobe, Ariza, Gasol, Bynum).

I assumed the lineup would be Fish, Kobe, Ariza, Odom, and Gasol. Ariza and Odom can stay with Lewis and Turkoglu on the perimeter. I hope they don't get burned having Gasol chasing around one of those 2 at the 3 point line. It'll be an advantage on the offensive end though.
