Last night after Parnell gave up a bases loaded single with 2 outs you can see Santana in the dugout just get up and walk into the clubhouse with a pissed off look on his face. I get the feeling he hates every one of his teammates. He would literally be better off on the KC Royals.

A pretty good read in today's Boston Globe. Remember a couple years ago when Jose Offerman charged the mound with a bat during a minor league game? He hit the catcher and the guy has never been able to play since. He fucked up his head and has to go to physical therapy. Offerman got two years of probation.

The Twins and Mets have both cost him Cy's, as it seems wins tends to determine the winner of close races at the end of the year.

True but the incredible thing about this year is that he's starting off with a 0.78 ERA through 6 or so starts. In his career, his worst months are April and May so with that start he can feasibly finish with a sub 2.00 ERA. If he wins less than 20 games I can imagine the NY Post Headline:

"Johan Kills Teammates, Manager in Clubhouse Massacre... Mets fans approve"

He just needs to work on his bat, it's in his own hands now. He always hit well during inter league play with MN.

I had hoped we had heard the last of this, but apparently I was wrong. Everyone at ESPN must have gotten a collective chubby when the book came out today.

Brian Cashman nearly a year and a half ago to Minnesota: "You want Hughes, Melky, Kennedy.....AND ONE MORE PROSPECT??!!!!!...NO DEAL"

It amazes me how after years of bad deals bringing in over the hill pitchers that the Yanks had a chance to bring a guy in who was in his prime and completely blew it.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time I thought both the Yankees and Red Sox made the right move by keeping their prospects and I'm not going to go back on that just because Johan is doing exactly what everyone thought he would do with the Mets.

I don't even blame Roger for going on the radio and ripping the book. I blame the writers who found the need to dig up a story that no one cares about anymore. Leave well enough alone I say. I think the media wants fans to care about steroids way more than we actually do care.

I can see where you're coming from, I just thought at the time it was the right thing to do. I was never big on Kennedy, and even though people were high on Hughes, most thought at best he'd be a #3 in the rotation.

If that were true, there wouldn't be the level of outrage at the NFL's steroid use. Wait, there is no outrage.

Yeah I think everyone pictures Hughes as the next Andy Pettitte at best. Someone that gets the job done and hangs towards the top of the rotation. He's still young so we'll see how it pans out. Of course the problem with him has never been his stuff, just his injury issues. His control will come as he gets older.

I wasn't big on Kennedy either. I do think he will be a major league starter though. I think there are a few teams that can plug him into their #5 spot right but that will be the best he can do for his whole career.

Then think about it this way: If the Yankees had Johan they wouldn't have gotten CC. So instead of trading away their best pitching prospect they threw some money at Sabathia and they got a lefty ace in his prime.

Don't forget this is the Yankees we are talking about. They would have thrown money at CC even if they traded for Johan.

But would he figuratively be better off? I thought a conversation on ESPN was interesting - it was Steve Phillips talking about how some pitchers just don't get run support, and others get a lot. He talked about how fast/slow a pitcher worked (which kind of makes a bit of sense), but he also talked about the psychological part where if you have a good pitcher, maybe the team does not feel the need to grind every AB. While my instant reaction was to dismiss it, I wonder if there is anything to it?

I also wonder if the type of pitcher impacts the hitters - Johan gets a lot of strikeouts which leads to fielders standing around a lot. Or am I crazy?

I think both teams also had some concerns about possible arm injuries down the line - and when Johan was having some problems in spring training, a lot of folks were saying see...

I'm also surprised that (N)ESPN (the New England Sports Network) has virtually no coverage of Lou Merloni (1B for the Red Sox a while back) saying that there was a meeting with a team doctor about how to USE steroids... This is a guy who is not hocking a book, I'm not aware of any axe he has to grind and I don't see any reason why he would just make this up. This would potentially be FAR MORE damaging as in this case you have a team endorsing and facilitating steroid use.

Will it be investigated by Bud Selig? Perhaps Mitchell can look into it?

There is probably something to it, but probably just as much to intangibles (like instead of taking it easy because you have a good pitcher on the mound, I'm guessing some players are trying to hard because they feel like they really owe it to him) a lot of ball players are such headcases that I'm sure it messes with them.

Possibly because the Merloni thing you just mentioned is not accurate at all. That's not even remotely close to what he said, but why let the truth get in the way.

He said that the Red Sox organization was aware of steroid use to the point that an outsider doctor (not a team doctor) was educating players on the affects of steroids during spring training.

His Quote (Dr. Pappas was the team doctor at the time):

"It wasn't Dr. [Arthur] Pappas or anyone like that but I don't recall who it was," Merloni said. "We'd had many meetings and talks about how bad steroids were, but this one was different. It was the team acknowledging there were people taking it and they were trying to inform us about not abusing steroids. In no way were they telling us to take steroids or encouraging us to do so."

So there you go. Way to get "The Red Sox were encouraging players to take steroids" out of that.

My apologies on messing up the facts, but does it change things much? Perhaps I should say the Red Sox were encouraging those players that were taking steroids to do it in a safe way? (I guess we should applaud them for it, my bad). Team doctor, outside doctor - the Red Sox had a doctor come in at their request...really doesn't matter who it was if the Red Sox took the lead.

So great, another Red Sox apologist heard from. Again, why hasn't MLB looked into this? I don't care what team it is, if the MLB is serious - go after the teams and not just the players. The only difference with it being the RedSox is that the media will not cover it (especially ESPN). Is there any doubt if this were the Yankees or the Mets, it would be one of the lead stories on ESPN?

Yeah, its a MLB/ESPN conspiracy to prevent damaging the Red Sox. I'm sure Bill Belichick is involved somehow.

What exactly should MLB investigate? There was no drug policy in 2001.

At the beginning of the season, the Cards were rotating 4 outfielders among the 3 spots. Now they're down to two after Ankiel's injury and Ludwick leaving the game tonight with a hamstring problem.
