That is weird. Unless it’s total mismanagement, I can only assume that they haven’t liked anything they’ve seen and don’t think she’s salvageable at all.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

That seems weird unless there were locker room/chemistry shenanigans and/or her knees are just done or something and she can't get medically cleared. I realize that all contracts are guaranteed in a couple days but is her contract really breaking the bank here?

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

This sucks but maybe she can make the playoffs. I went to my first game of the season on Tuesday, and she was pretty quiet with nine points.

Crowd was light, but their stadium is being remodeled so they’re playing in a minor-league hockey arena 20 miles north of the city.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

I watched both playoff games on Thursday. Chicago had a huge early lead then held on the rest of the way, never leading by less than five.

Phoenix-New York was close the whole way. The Liberty were only 12-20 during the regular season, but they were holding a steady lead until Sophie Cunningham came in and started drilling threes, and then it came down to one made FT with 0.4 seconds left. Ionescu is a nice player, and Griner does so many things, with passing, intimidating shots, and post scoring.

I have tickets for the Storm hosting Phoenix in the second round (as fourth seed, they host the highest-seeded survivor of the first round—Phoenix was 5, NY 8). Breanna Stewart is out unfortunately, Taurasi was out Thursday and is unknown for Sunday. I love watching her play, and who knows how many more chances I’ll get. Seattle beat Phoenix last week without Stewart to clinch a first-round bye, and Jewell Loyd scored 37 points. They may need that again to win this one.

Jewell Loyd doing her best John Starks impression yesterday.
Why were they still drawing up plays for her at the end when she couldn’t make a shot to save her life?

It really was brutal. They kept feeding her the ball even though it was obvious she was having an off-day. I get that sheís a scoring machine who can carry a team, and that she scored 22 in one quarter in their last game against Phoenix when Stewie was out, but they did have other options. Sue scored 10 in the fourth, and even Katie Lou Samuelson was doing some damage. Itís frustrating to come so close in a single-elimination game, but they set themselves up for that with their late slump, and Stewieís injury just made it all harder. Iím proud of the Olympians, but that certainly didnít do the Storm any favors.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

I didn't watch it, but just watched a couple of the clips on ESPN (Taurasi block and 3, Griner block), it was obvious it was a great game.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

It was a great game. I recorded it and watched it a few hours later, but fortunately WNBA is so low on the radar that I was reading the baseball recaps and still didnít get spoiled.

But yeah, it was so tight, and just when it looked like one team was starting to open up a lead, the other would come back. Gotta hand it to Old Lady Taurasi for some big plays, and Griner also came through down the stretch with several big buckets.

I also watched game 4, and that was also memorable. 24-0 Aces run! And then 14-0 in game 5. I was rooting for them because Iím pretty tired of watching Phoenix, but I guess itís their first Finals since they won in 2014.

Iím happy for local favorite Kelsey Plum. After setting records at the U of Washington, she had a bit of a rough start in the pros, but now sheís Sixth Player of the Year, and had a real impact in the games I watched.

Pretty impressive for Phoenix to make it this far as a 5 seed and having to play 2 single elimination games to get to the Finals.

Yep, kudos to them for two single-eliminations then this series. Frustrating that the Storm lost that game in OT when Jewell was so off. Maybe if they had survived that, and if theyíd gotten Stewie back, they couldíve gone on a similar run.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

BTW, congrats to the WNBA champion Chicago Sky.

I admit I don't really follow the WNBA even though I do know some of the key players having worked women's basketball. Happy for Candace Parker. She's one of the greats.

Saw the game yesterday and it was a great one. Congrats to Chicago on winning the first in team history.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

I watched the third and fourth games on Monday, and Chicago was really impressive. Parker is the name star, of course, but Kaleah Freakin' Copper was great in game 3, and Allie Quigley stepped up in game 4. Courtney Vandersloot was great as well, and Stephanie Dotson (who I recognized from Olympic 3x3) hit some big shots. Taurasi is still capable of big games, but fact is, she's old and injured, and also capable of bad ones like in game 4. And she probably shouldn't have been playing game 3 at all considering she pushed a referee twice, which is supposed to be an automatic one-game suspension.

Chicago like Phoenix had to survive two single-elimination games, then they beat the top-seeded Connecticut Sun. It shows how close a lot of these teams are, but also how you need to survive injuries and get on a roll at the right time.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

WNBA playoffs switching from 1-1-5-5 format to 3-5-5, so no more single-elimination rounds.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

Sue Bird returns for a 19th season. She’s still playing at a high level and has talented teammates (off-season pending) to handle the scoring load, so why not? I was at the playoff game they lost, and everyone was hoping it wouldn’t be the end.

Re: Wow, the WNBA Thread.

Yeah, that is (literally) a big loss. Cambage is a force. I saw the Sparks make a deal recently but didnít know it was to clear the decks for this.

Most of the stars stayed put as expected (Aíja Wilson, Jonquel Jones, Brianna Stewart, Kahleah Copper), but the Mercury added scoring leader Tina Charles, reportedly for about half a top contract. They cleared space and still added a former all-star in Diamond DeShields. Thatís a stacked team.

I know a lot of players go to Russian leagues in the offseason because the money is good.

Brittney Griner is currently detained and location unknown somewhere in Russia because she was arrested for a Pot smuggling charge. She apparently faces 10 years in jail.
