Sue Bird hits another late game-winner and the Storm survive game 1 of a best-of-five finals

I just saw the highlights of one of the final games on ESPN and was wondering why the hell do the Storm uniforms have a huge BING logo in the front of their jersey. Are they that desperate for money?

Yep, I think the Phoenix Mercury started it with LifeLock. It's very valuable real estate in the women's game.

I love it when the Connecticut Sun (Sponsored by Mohegan Sun Casino) play the New York Liberty (Sponsored by Foxwoods Casino)

I could talk again about how the games are worth watching but there's not really any point. And I can't even complain about thread crapping since this whole thread is kind of a crap, including the title

Trust me, most sports fans in Seattle are not pinning our hopes on the Storm.

For Storm fans yes, it is a bright spot, but that is about 5% of the sportsfans in Seattle if you are being honest with yourself.

You ever watch euro league soccer? They have that too, it is just another revenue source.

I tried to get into it back in 2004, and this year...if 2 titles won't get me into really liking this sport..then nothing will.

Oh sure, the audience for women's sports will always be a fraction of what it is for men's sports, and we all like what we like. I'll probably never get into auto racing and other people will never get into women's basketball. I applaud your giving it a shot, though.

Re: Wow, the WNBA still exists.

I watched some WNBA basketball this weekend. I saw most of the 4th qtr of the early game (Washington vs Somebody) and it was fairly entertaining, but the best part of the broadcast was that coaches huddles and referee conversations were part of the broadcast. You could tell that one of the coaches had more control of the team and was actually giving strategic instruction while the other coach let the players control the huddle with comments like "play defense" and seemed somewhat confused at times.

There was an embarassing conversation recorded between 3 referees. They went to the video monitor to review whether a player was in the restricted circle for a charge call. She was a good foot and a half outside the circle and they probably looked at 7 replays and then the lead official looked at the other two and said something like "what do we do?" Didn't give me much confidence in the officials.

Is this a normal practice in WNBA to have live mics on all the action? If so, I might check out more. As a basketball fan, it was pretty cool to be in the huddle with coaches and players in a tight game.

I watched a bit of the first half of the second game - the rookie on Chicago was pretty impressive.

I don't usually watch Basketball, but I knew Brittney and Elena Della Donne were playing against each other so I watched until Brittney got 3 fouls and then went back to watching Falling Skies. I missed Brittney's 2 dunks in the 4th quarter, though. So that sucked. Phoenix got spanked by Chicago in that game. As great as everyone thinks Diana Taurasi is, I just don't see it and its too bad Brittney is on her team.

Re: Wow, the WNBA still exists.

I admit I've drifted away from the WNBA a bit. I didn't manage to attend any games last year, and the Storm will be without both Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson all year due to injury. They had a great run with two championships, but I think the window is now closed.

Griner et al will give the WNBA a lot of exposure this year, which is a good thing. Taurasi is an incredible player, but I think she's had some injuries. Phoenix earned Griner as the top overall pick for a reason.

Re: Wow, the WNBA still exists.

I'm probably one of the one only WNBA fans on this board but Liz Cambage balled out today. She broke the WNBA scoring record by scoring 53 points and she did it only only 22 shots. She also had 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Edit: Also sad reading through this thread seeing all the sexist and misogynist posts but hey at least a lot of people in this thread have been banned since then.

Re: Wow, the WNBA still exists.

I admit I haven't been to any games this summer, even though I'm a big Sue Bird fan and know that at age 37 she could retire any time. And I do like their new stars, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd. I just haven't fit it into the schedule.

A local star, Kelsey Plum, was the top pick last year and struggled. I just checked her stats this year, and she's still been mediocre, topping out at 16 points and not even reaching double digits in most games.

And yeah, this thread always discouraged me.

I really like Plum. I've watched 4 or 5 Aces games this year and she's been solid in all of them. Her scoring has been hit or miss but she's a good all around player.

Great to hear. A coworker used to keep me up on this kinda stuff but recently left the company. Unfortunately my sports capacity is limited to the WNBA games I actually attend.

I really like going to the games, though. The seats are close and relatively inexpensive, and the players seem relatable and likable. The athleticism can't match the NBA, but passing and ball movement work for me.

I'd never posted in this thread before and just noticed the recent bump. I've got tickets to an Indiana Fever game next week. First professional game of any kind for me (men or women) in person.

I've been to 5 or 6 Phoenix Mercury games and I enjoyed them far more than any Suns games I've been to. I was really hoping to go to the game when the Lynx were in town (Lindsay Whalen is my favorite player) but we were out of town. It sucks too because this might be Whalen's last season since she's playing for the Lynx and is the coach for the Minnesota women's college team at the same time.
