I guess I'm a strange person then since I root for Ohio State and Notre Dame in all sports and North Carolina in men's basketball. I've been a fan of UNC since MJ went there. I've been a fan of OSU and ND all of my life.

Why not? If you grow up in a state (particularly one w/o a pro team in a particular sport), how can you not understand rooting for the big state school (or the closest state school if there are multiple ones)?

There are many factors for college rooting interests. You could have grown up in Michigan and attended school at Northwestern. Or you could be a Catholic and root for Notre Dame. Or you might not have went to college and merely root for the local squad.
I have a harder time understanding rooting for a pro team outside of your immediate viewing area. It's like rooting for the high school across town rather than your own.

Im really fucked up... I grew up an FSU fan. Spent a year at U of Tennessee (walked on there), then finished up my undergrad at UCF, and finally went to UF for my Masters. So there you go.
I root for FSU above all esle, but I watch a lot of UF sports in other athletics (college basketball and gymnastics mainly) and don't totally hate them in football (unless they are playing FSU). I would like to see the UCF program grow more and do root for them but I don't think they will ever be at the level of the other schools here in FL (even USF).

Being from Louisiana, I can tell you that all the people whose lives fucking revolve around LSU sports even though they have never so much as stepped foot on the campus drives me up the wall. I constantly get those jerkoffs asking me "why don't you like LSU?", to which I reply "why should I, I did not go to school there".
But I didn't go to college at all, so unless I am going to be a sports fan with no team to root for (which would not make any sense) then I have to choose SOME school that I didn't attend. I just don't limit myself to winning colleges from the state I live in. And I stress winning because I find it amusing how many people live much closer to and have gone to school at Nicholls State and yet are LSU fans as opposed to the school they F'ing WENT TO.

Ohio State - It's a part of growing up in Ohio, football is king, and the Buckeyes are your team
Indiana/Dayton - Lived in Dayton 30 of my first 34 years on this planet, and I always rooted for the Hoosiers since Indiana was to basketball what Ohio was to football. Now that I live in Bloomington, IU hoops is a lock.
Hopkins - I did my graduate work at JHU, and Lacrosse is an easy game to love, particularly the way the Jays play it.

I root for Purdue in football and basketball. I don't pay attention to other college sports.
I never went there, but I started liking them because Rod Woodson came from there, and he was my favorite Steeler growing up. Now my uncle teaches there.

Multiple sports, multiple teams. Kind of helps when the Alma Mater doesn't really do sports.

I follow a school or three - possibly across all sports.

I root for USF but only because my wife works there and goes to school there. If it weren't for her I would not root for any college teams.

I only care about college basketball, and I root for any team from Kentucky when it comes to college hoops. I know there's a big Kentucky/Louisville rivalry, but I don't live in the state anymore and I've chosen to ignore it.
I hate college football, but because of my job, not following it isn't really an option.
