Long-Time Braves Announcer Skip Caray Passes Away 8/3/08

Just saw this news-worthy item in the sports news:

ESPN Story

Sad news. I remember watching a lot of TBS games with Caray covering them, with my favorite memories being when the Braves were a poor team in the 1980's. Skip had no problem poking fun at the Braves teams then.

Edit: Sorry, I put the wrong date in the thread title. Should be 8/3/08 obviously. Also, I spelled Caray's last name incorrectly. If a mod could make the corrections, I'd appreciate it.

I just heard about this a few minutes ago while watching SportsCenter.

RIP Skip.

I have heard Skip call more games than anyone else. I will miss him a lot.

Some of my earliest memories of TV are him calling the bad games in the 80s and pitching the bad movies that followed. Skip Carey announcing that Squirm was coming up after the game, if it ever ended, was true entertainment.

I grew up back in the 80s, before the Internet and Extra Innings satellite TV. Pretty much the only way to watch out of market baseball games was to watch Harry Caray and the Cubs on WGN, or Skip Caray and the Braves on TBS. I watched a ton of both growing up. I swear, until this moment when I read that article, it never ocurred to me at all that they were father and son. That just blows my mind.

R.I.P. Skip, it won't be the same hearing somebody else call Chipper Jones' name.

Yeah, I'm a Cardinals fan like yourself, but I do remember him from Braves games on the SuperStation. RIP.

If not the top sports memory for me, it's right up there.

RIP Skip.

Fixed.

Personally, I found Skip Caray's voice to be rather annoying. I never liked watching the Braves on TBS because of him, but he certainly was a fixture for the Bravos for all those years and as part of baseball royalty in the booth he will be missed. RIP.

I just read about this in the morning paper. Ugh, as if this year wasn't bad enough for the Braves as it is.

RIP Skip, I'll miss you a hell of a lot.

Too true. "Coming up after the game, Harper Valley P.T.A." I'll always remember the 4th of July game against the Mets in 85 where they went ahead with the fireworks when the game ended at like 3:55AM.

The one I always remember is Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects. He and Don must have argued for 15 minutes over what "Kinjite" was and why it was so forbidden. Another classic was Forced Vengeance. Skip had a special fondness for promoting that one, probably because TBS aired it at least once a week. "As this game goes into extra innings, we'd like to apologize to those anxiously awaiting Forced Vengeance starring Chuck Norris as a walking weapon that never misses ..."

Listening to Skip was always a treat.

And I always laughed when he called "the wave" the "Don Sutton permanent wave".

RIP Skip.

I'm another who grew up during the 80's and when I wasn't watching Angels games, I was watching and listening to Skip do play-by-play of Braves games on WTBS. It was also cool because during the summers I'd get to watch the Cubs on WGN early in the day and listen to his Dad do play-by-play and then turn on the Braves in the afternoon and listen to him. I also loved how they used to advertise the Braves as "America's team". That always gave me a good laugh.

R.I.P., Skip.

Skip's pre-game call-in shows on local radio, featuring his martini-dry wit, were classic. The funniest thing was that invariably a completely earnest caller from one of the more rural listening areas would ask Skip how to compute ERA or (even better) to explain the infield fly rule. Skip would always provide a correct answer, but hearing his barely disguised disgust at having to explain this for the umpteenth time (did none of these callers ever listen to the show???) was a treat.

I started listening to ball games on radio and t.v. since 1970.
And he was one of the most boring play by play I have ever heard.

Guess no one will have to ask him what an infield fly rule is anymore...

So you're glad he's dead?

I mean, what's the point of posting comments like this in a thread like this? Have some respect for the dead...

Thought a link might be nice to relive the moment.

One of my most hated sports memories of all time (as a...struggling Pirates fan)...

Sad about Caray though.
