I'm trying to figure out this playoff percentage thing. Can someone explain to me how the Mariners have a better chance at winning the division (0.1%) than they do at winning the wild card (0.0%)?

I don't know about the Mariners, but the Angels are the best team in baseball right now. They are fearless on the base paths and are clutching up at the plate. Their pitching is also clicking right now. If they stay hot, no one is going to beat them.

I'm sure the Angels and the Cubs wish the postseason started right now. Both are playing extremely well. In the Angels case, it'll be interesting to see if they can keep the intensity through the end of the year since they will likely clinch their division well before the conclusion of the regular season.

I'm guessing because they only need 3 teams to go through an epic collapse to win the division, while they'd need every team in front of them to lose most of their games to get the wild card. Since the teams in front of them play each other the rest of the way it may not be possible for all of them to lose enough games.

Always willing to go the extra mile for a teammate.

Bay should tell him to fuck off because he can have it for free in a few months.

Are most athletes charities still kind of jokes? I remember a news story on that a few years ago when most of them were just ways of funneling money to a family member (the president of the charity). I don't think they were necessarily set up with that intention, but usually that's how it worked.

He may have, though it's early. ESPN and Yahoo have him listed as #39.

Bay will wear number 44. Expect a hatchet job from Gerry Callahan in tomorrow's Herald for not donating to Schilling's charity.

edit: He's certainly saying the right things.

Nice little surprise for the Pirates today with Karstens pitching 6 shutout innings against the Cubs. Considering Karstens is probably rated as the least valuable of the 8 prospects the Pirates got, and only projects as an end of the rotation/middle reliever - he looked better than I expected...especially against that Cubs offense. Only one game, but at the very least, he's a huge improvement over the trash that they kept trotting out there, like John Van BenScrotum.

Going to be fun to see Andy LaRoche and Brandon Moss get some regular, every day playing time as well. Exciting stuff for the Pirates, for a change.

Maybe, but shills' seems to be pretty reputable. Most of the sox give to the Jimmy Fund though.

Baseball's a funny game...

The Cards were hot winning 4 straight out of the break before the Brewers sweep 4 in St. Louis.

Milwaukee rides that wave of momentum and promptly gets shelled by the Cubs in 4 straight at home.

Chicago extends their lead, heads home where they've been dominant and immediately get shut out by the Pirates.

The Twins finally designated Livan to assignment as well as Craig Monroe (I'll have to change my DVDtalk league name!). As expected they called up Liriano and also Randy Ruiz, a 30-year-old career minor-leaguer, who is scheduled to start tonight as DH.

No word on when Liriano will start, but Livan was scheduled for Monday. Liriano was supposed to pitch tonight in AAA.

Yeah no kidding. The Yankees were 8-0 after the break before losing a series to the Orioles at home. They're also going to lose 4 games to the 2008 World Series Champs LAAAAAAAAAA.

how much time does adam Everett have left. The only reason why I didn't mind keeping Livan around is because he could be a mentor for the youngsters and he can eat up a lot of innings with Silva gone they don't really have anyone that eats up time.

Manny giving a live press conference at home plate before the game? I think the last player to do that was Lou Gehrig...

I hope Manny just goes on an f-bomb tirade.

Really, he hasn't been eating many more innings than anyone else, he just got more starts. As far as Everett, I think they are stuck with him unless someone comes through on the waiver market or a september call up pans out. At least when Buscher is in, they shouldn't need him.
