The Official 2008 NFL Draft Thread

When I got married, I told my wife that I would try to be kind of loving and considerate and accomodating when it came to watching sports, but that there were three sporting events that I absolutely, positively have to watch -- the Carolina/Duke basketball games, the Super Bowl, and the NFL Draft. And of those three, the most sacrosant was the NFL Draft. On NFL Draft day, I will be at home with both TVs on, my laptop on WiFi, a twelve pack of Labatts and a big pot of chili on the stove. There will be no exceptions.

(About fourteen years ago, my first wife dragged me out of the house to run an errand and I missed the first half hour of the Draft. My second wife has never made that mistake.)

Today is like Christmas, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day and my birthday all rolled into one. This is my favorite day of the year.

So... the draft starts at 3 PM. (Why does it start at 3? Because Roger Goodell sucks ass.) We know that Jake Long is going to the Dolphins at #1. Where does St. Louis go? I've heard Dorsey, I've heard Chris Long. What about Atlanta at #3? If they have a choice, is it Dorsey or Ryan? Do the Raiders pass on McFadden at #4 and go with Gholston, and do any teams trade up into the top ten to get the man they want? What do the Patriots do with the #7 pick -- trade down, take a name player, or pull a Belicheck and draft some guy you've never heard of but who'll be in the Pro Bowl in three years?

My Panthers pick #13... I'm rooting for Derrick Harvey, DE out of Florida, but I won't be at all disappointed if they go with Stewart or Mendenhall at RB, Otah or Williams at OT (not crazy about the bust possibilities of Albert at OG), or even one of the CBs in the draft. I can live with them picking Matt Ryan -- I think it's a luxury pick we couldn't afford, but even if he just carries a clipboard for two years behind Delhomme, his trade value will still be excellent -- as long as they don't trade up and give up draft picks. Really, I don't see how the Panthers can go wrong... the great thing about the draft is that it's all about potential. You can talk yourself into anything.

So who else is going to fanatically watch the draft today?

This one of my favorite days of the years as well. Only thing is, Al Davis ruins it for me just about evey year by making a bonehead pick or move that will wind up screwing the Raiders.

With all the top ten picks they have had the last five or six years, there's no reason why Oakland should field a better team than they have the last six years.

I hope the Dolphins don't take the entire time to announce the Long pick.

As long as the Bears don't draft Otah at 14 I will be happy.

Michael Smith of Espn.com is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have decided on Chris Long with the 2nd pick.

That's what they're saying on ESPN radio.

Virtually every mock draft I've seen has the Raiders picking from amoung Gholston, Dorsey or McFadden. Would any of those three disappoint you?

I think Gholston has the biggest bust factor -- although, of course, any running back is just an ACL away from oblivion. (I'm looking at you, Ki-Jana.) What do you think about Dorsey at 4?

This is tough: NFL Network is not in HD, and I like Tirico; but Boomer and Mort are colossal douchebags.

Why is everyone so focused on McFadden's character shit? I know it happens every year. Sure, the guy apparently has a shitty family. He also got into two fights, one of which seems justified, but was never convicted of any charges. I know teams want an impact guy that won't cause problems, but there are tons of guys in the NFL that never had problems in college and went on to be criminals.

Because pre-Draft coverage started at 11am.

McFadden will be a Raider or a Jet, and his draft slot will be completely unaffected by any "character" issues.

I've been hearing about his "character" issues for weeks. Heard about 4 different stories on it on sports talk radio just yesterday. Stupid. Every guy in the draft is a crapshoot. They could get hurt. They could not play to potential. I'd gladly take the guy that's got that much talent, even if he is at slighter risk to go off and start killing people or something.

I like Miami's pick of Jake Long -- smart to take a franchise OT when you draft # 1. Much better track record than DE, QB or RB. And if you need to rebuild your whole team, the O-line is the best place to start. A good offensive line will cover a multitude of weaknesses.

Woo-hoo! The Draft is starting!!!

And the Commish had the Dolphin's card in hand. What a shocker -- they took Chris long after already signing Jake Long. Now they have the top two picks. Parcells is a genius!!!

I assume the Rams are doing anything and everything they can to trade this pick.
