Well, apparently ESPN.com wants to emulate porn sites and they have surrounded almost piece of the site with ads. Now the headlines are in the middle while a huge ad where the headlines used to be.

My visits to their website have been growing more and more infrequent over the last couple years, I may just stop altogether with that ugly layout.

I was wondering what the deal was didn't realize it was ADblock plus taking care of it for me. That does look dumb

i'm about to dump them for CBS sportsline anyway. seems like more and more of ESPNs content is going the Insider route, like the MLB contributors. fuck that.

yeah, I was about to bitch about it too. Other than the "headline" story, the rest are now afterthoughts.

Re: Is It Just Me, Or Has ESPN Been Going Down Hill?

The problem with ESPN, IMO, is that they have hired too many bad ex-athletes on their pre-game shows. I used to enjoy Sunday Countdown with Berman & Tom Jackson, but in the past few years they have hired guys I cannot stand: Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson, and Emmitt Smith. And they have too many guys too on these shows, as sometimes less is more. On the Monday Night Football game they need to get rid of Tony Kornheiser too. I love him on PTI, but his schtick doesn't work during a football game, and reminds me of the failed Dennis Miller experiment.

I still wish they would bring back Hockey Night with Steve Levy or John Saunders, but as always if ESPN doesn't have the TV contract, it is second class.

I would like to see Hockey night come back, and I agree about Cris Carter I know it's sacreligous for a Viking fan to bad mouth Carter but he is annoying and dumb.

I think it is obvious that being run as a corporate profit-center for Disney/ABC has had a seriously negative impact on the quality of programming on ESPN. The new Baseball Network is destroying it in terms of coverage for baseball. I really wish ESPN would drop the never-ending ticker as it takes up a good amount of screen area and adds very little information. I also have to question who makes the hiring decisions on most of their shows as many of the on-air talent seem to be universally reviled.

Its gone way down hill since Jonathan "the coach" Coachman came onto Espn. I cant even concentrate on the highlights he does because I look at him and laugh because of the stuff he's done in the past.

You just know that the guy that decided to move the headlines got fired for it.

As cool as I think the Kobe/Lebron thing is from Vitamin Water (there's a cool foldout in the latest SLAM magazine), god those ads on ESPN.com are annoying!

Is really bad, but this is only the start. And people still wonder if ESPN and the powers that be want a Cavs-Lakers final.

Uh, it's 2009. You all should be using firefox + adblock to remove 80% of the shit that ESPN has on their page

I like Chrome better then Firefox, and the normal ads never bother me. It's just stuff like that where it fits outside the frame and design of the page that's annoying.

Re: Is It Just Me, Or Has ESPN Been Going Down Hill?

I hate all the time/effort they spend on non-sport, pop-culture crap. The current home page poll is which was a bigger upset: Magic beating Cavs, or the American Idol finale.

Really? Really?

It's bad enough that Simmons seemingly devotes entire columns to crap like that. At least keep it quarantined in "The Sports Guy's World." Unless I'm alone, and people read sports chats so they can get the latest on Desperate Housewives and the like. If so -- I apologize.

"ESPN: In an effort to be everything for everyone -- we've become nothing much at all."

I don't mind Simmons at all since he is one of the main critics of the direction ESPN in whole has been going over the past couple of years. I also don't mind that silly crap, since it is just a small blurb. What most the people here are complaining about is as to how bias and corporate ESPN has become and how they are dictating where the sport leagues are going. I know the NHL shot themselves in the foot with the stupid strike, but ESPN has almost ignore the league at all cost, instead focusing of redundant crap of TO, A-rod or Michael Vick. Also, even though there is people who want to see Kobe vs Lebron in the finals, it doesn't mean that ESPN is going to serve as cheerleader for that and completely dismissed other teams like Orlando and Denver. Instead of the stories reading as Orlando winning game 1, they are focusing more and more on how the Cavs lost. Did focused the same amount of time to Denver losing? No. Why? Because The Mouse cares more about the ratings and according to them Lakers equals ratings.

I don't really disagree with anything you just said, but do find it funny to think that "The Mouse" is screwing over the Orlando MAGIC, the team of the Magic Kingdom and Disney World.
