Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN

BRISTOL, Conn. -- Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN.

Patrick, who has been with the network for 18 years, announced on his radio show Monday that he will appear on air for the last time Aug. 17. Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president for production, made a simultaneous announcement.

A news release said that the mutual agreement will allow Patrick to pursue new interests outside of ESPN.

The final week of Patrick's radio show, which started in 1999, will include a look back at memorable moments, interviews and guests.

"If there was animosity, I wouldn't be doing any radio shows after today," Patrick said on his show, adding, "I hope to be doing radio somewhere, somehow, down the road."

In a news release, Patrick said: "I feel privileged to have had this opportunity and I have extremely mixed emotions about leaving. With that said, I told ESPN that I believe it's time for me to try something different, something that will also be challenging and rewarding. While I'm not sure what that will be, I am grateful to ESPN for its willingness to allow me to pursue new endeavors."

Said Williamson: "Dan has accomplished so much over the past two decades at ESPN and fans and newsmakers have turned to him for his steady and trusted approach. We wish him the very best."

Patrick was a SportsCenter anchor from 1989-2006, winning the National Sportscaster of the Year award by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) in 2000. He also received a Sports Emmy Award in the Studio Host category in 1998.

Patrick has also written the column "Outtakes" for ESPN The Magazine.

Interesting. I wonder a) where he's going, and b) who's going to step in.

I don't listen to his show very often, but I really hope they don't replace him with another needlessly angry sports radio host.

Price is Right, or to tour the country touting the amazing benefits of Just for Men for people with impossibly small foreheads and gorgeous heads of hair who are just beginning to show gray.

Olbermann would fit that bill.

I did a double-take when I was listening to the Dan Patrick radio show this afternoon. Whoa!

Is he following Olberman to MSNBC (i.e. oblivion)?

Good riddance! I never liked Dan either on SportsCenter or his radio show.

I really really wish they would bring back Erik Kuselias to the radio. I enjoyed his radio show on my commute home from work and they replaced him mostly with Seibel and occasionally Gottlieb, Jason Smith, etc.

I really wish Erik would come back to either timeslot, his old one or DP's.

I won't exactly miss the constant celeb name dropping.

"So I was golfing with P-Diddy over the weekend..."

I really liked Dan's show when Dibble was on there. It was like having a smug asshole with a dumbass as a co-host. It just worked. The past year with just Dan has been just eh. You could tell that he was getting bored with being on Sports Radio. Well except when KO or Reggie came on. I really like the Big Show Hour. Heck I'd like it if KO took over his slot but I doubt he has the time.

I'm beginning to think DP got the TPIR gig. That would be cool. He's got this perverted old man appeal about him.

I'm surprised it took him so long. ESPN has been a sinking ship for years.

Me 2. He is about the best person that I have heard taking over Bob Barker's spot.

Maybe he can have a show after Olberman called the 'I hate Bush even MORE' show. Good riddance. He and Olberman (although great in their time) ruined sportscasting as we know it.

I would not be surprised that Erik Kuselias will be offered Patrick's old hosting slot. Kuselias was an excellent radio host and he would be welcome on the radio again on a regular basis on ESPN Radio.

I was a big fan of Patrick, Dibble, (Salisbury) and the Show Killer....but when the show feel back to just Dan, it seemed a little empty.

As a sign of how little I watch ESPN, I didn't know he wasn't doing Sportscenter anymore....did he get demoted to just radio?

Patrick & KO were awesome together.....something tells me they may be going at it on news. Eh, we'll see. His radio show as of late is too scattered, some days he has it, others he doesn't.
