Who is this Muhammad guy playing for the Bears?

Ok...so forgive me for a dumb question but I have one. I didn't watch a single regular season NFL game, however, I did watch the superbowl tonight. Why did this player called M. Muhammad get booed everytime his name was mentioned. Is it because he is muslim? He looked like a pretty good player. Even in the introductions for the coin toss, he was the only player to get booed? Why?

They're saying "Moose". Short for "Muhsin".

Muhsin Muhammed was a great, great player for the Panthers, and is still a great player for the Bears.

Aha! Now I understand...thanks for clearing that up. It just didn't make sense that he was being booed when 2/3 of the crowd were Chicago fans. Thanks!

As an Englishman who doesn't follow NFL really, I was wondering if they were booing him aswell for the name. IMRICKJAMES, it's not messed up if that was my 1st reaction. Just the way the world can be sometimes!

He's probably thinking of all the other muslim players that get booed because of their religion like ... um.....mm.....well I'm sure I'll think of one of them by the end of the day.

I was looking through the ESPN chat after the Super Bowl and this very question was asked half a dozen times. Apparently a lot of people thought this...

I still remember an NBA player named Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf who used to play for the Denver Nuggets prior to 9/11. He refused to stand for the Anthem and was suspended. The suspension was lifted when Abdul-Rauf decided that during the anthem he could stand and pray, his hands held in front of his face in the traditional Muslim manner. He was booed for the rest of his career.

And again, this happened way before 9/11. Sorry, IMRICKJAMES if that's the first thought that came into my head, but the attitude towards Muslims isn't exactly too positive in this country at the moment.

Good Old Chris Jackson.

It was the same reaction a friend of mine had. She thought they were booing because he was Muslim. I told her that they wanted to do it now before he blew someone up. She didn't want to laugh but she did.

Go ahead....feel indignant.

That would have been funnier if shadowhawk hadn't beat you to it exactly 12 hours (what are the odds of that) earlier.

To his defense he might have been taking that time to find the picture

I'm shocked anyone was asking about this, since at one point the announcers specifically said they were saying Mooooooooooose and not booing.

Nah, just play the commercial from youtube in my browser, hit the PrintScreen button, copy it to paint, crop, upload to imageshack, and post the link here. 12 minutes, maybe, not 12 hours. I just didn't read the thread closely enough.

Slightly funnier....

It's all right guys, they're not saying "mooooose", they're saying "MOOOO-vers".

You're trying to compare something that isn't the same situation. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf wasn't booed because he was Muslim it was because of refusing the stand for the anthem. If it were the case that he was getting booed simply because of religion, he would have been getting booed before his suspension, as soon as the announcer introduced him as Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. It was only after the anthem situation did people boo.

This happened with Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnston, as his nickname was "Moose." Baseball manager Lou Piniella gets "lou-ed."
