Legendary Michigan coach Schembechler dies

Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News

Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler died Friday at Providence Hospital in Southfield. He was 77.

Schembechler was taping of a television show at WXYZ-TV and was taken by ambulance to Providence.

The coaching legend fell ill at the studios, station officials said. Schembechler also was hospitalized Oct. 20 after falling ill at the same location.

Police were sent to the station around 9:25 a.m. along with the city's fire department and escorted an ambulance to Providence Hospital, Harris said.

Schembechler met with the media earlier this week to discuss Saturday's game between the second-ranked Wolverines and No. 1 Ohio State.

During the news conference, the 77-year-old discussed the device that was implanted to regulate his heartbeat after he was hospitalized last month.

He said the device covered about half his chest and that doctors still were making adjustments to it.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and that he doesn't attend road games anymore.

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He has had two quadruple heart bypass operations.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year compiled a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. Schembechler's record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

Just as long as it doesn't get the best of him.

He's gone already. He couldn't even hang on for the game.

RIP Glen E. (Bo) Schembechler

ESPN hasn't even reported that yet.

I'm guessing that band The Dead Schembechler's that they've been flogging for the past week doesn't get mentioned again.

I guess this makes Saturday's pregame motivational speech easy ... as if they needed it.

RIP Bo

RIP Bo. Sad day for all of Michigan, he meant a lot not only to the University, but to all of college football. Bo and Woody are already getting their seats for the big game tomorrow.

Go Blue.

My grandfather just called me to tell me the news. My grandfather played along side Bo and Parseghian, while being coached by Woody Hayes at Miami of Ohio. Sad, sad day.

I guess Bo and Woody will be watching the game together tomorrow.

Go Blue!

They've actually already posted their regrets on their website:

I decided to make one of these. I like it better than the one that's going around:

Cool little story.

Bo and Woody are arguing with each other up on the big football field in the sky.

R.I.P. Bo from a die-hard Ohio State fan.

My local news interviewed the lead singer of the Dead Schembechlers, "Bo Biafra" tonight. The guy was dressed as Woody Hays and he said after tonight's show in honor of Bo, they are retiring the band name and may not even perform ever again.

I thought that showed class.

When I was a kid, I used to write sports figures and ask for autographs. Had a lot of success but usually got either 8x10 photos that they sent or a trading card that I sent. I really liked Bo Schembechler but had nothing to send him, so I just wrote a letter asking for one. After just a couple of weeks, I got a rather large envelope in the mail. He had sent a book, A Dynasty in Blue, with a full page inscription and signature. One of the classiest things that I had come across in my childhood hobby.

RIP

That's just the kind of person Bo was. Every story you hear just lets you know how much he cared about the football program, and the youth of the nation. It seemed as if you only had to meet the guy for only a few minutes, and he would always keep a place for you in his heart. Ultimately both Bo and Woody got what they wanted. Two nationally recoginized schools, and both being the top two teams in the nation.

Go Blue! Beat the bucks.

Well, my dad has a few things autographed by him that I'm sure I'll inherit some day.
