Fantasy NBA advice/sleeper picks

Any advice for this year for NBA Fantasy?

Who do you guys focus on getting first? (scorer, all around player, etc)

Sleeper picks might be Josh Smith, Amare (comeback player of the year?), Lamar Odom, Gerald Wallace?

The NBA doesn't really change much from year to year. Occasionally there's a Diaw or some other player that really busts out, but for the most part, all the good guys are drafted. They key has always been to identify value and draft to it. Each league has different rules, but even within the rules, they're are always players who go higher or lower than they should. Basically you want a projected player rater. As for who to draft first, it doesn't really matter in my book. Just go value.

As to the players you mentioned, I do like Josh Smith. He finished strong in '05 (although he also did in '04) and looks to only get better. I wouldn't call AMare a sleeper, he's a known quantity. I doubt Odom gets any better than last year, and Wallace while not well known is also probably not a sleeper unless your league is full of rookies.

I know picking up Boris Diaw last year turned it around for me and helped me dominate. Don't know for this year, but I have learned that Phoenix guys rack up the stats.

I just did a Yahoo public league draft for the fun of it. Here's my team:
1. Iverson
2. Ming
3. G. Wallace
4. Anthony
5. Webber
6. Marbury
7. Nocioni
8. Darko
9. Wilcox
10. D. Stoudamire
11. Frye
12. Deron Williams
13. Marvin Williams

The league is a H2H with with these positions - PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, C, UT, UT, BN, BN, BN

Any comments on my team? I think I had an alright draft.

Here are Bill Simmons underrated fantasy players: Bosh, O'Neal, Chauncey Billups, Roy, Dunleavy (I know, I know), Boozer, Josh Smith, Jarrett Jack, Ben Wallace (some Juvenation Machine potential on a new team), Leandro Barbosa, Rashard Lewis, Luol Deng, Mike Miller, Speedy Claxton, Danny Granger, Tim Duncan (huge season ahead), Shaun Livingston, and, of course, Rondo

I don't follow the NBA, but I play fantasy. How does my team look? I signed up for an autopick league, but ended up in a live draft league, so it was my first live draft:
1. Shawn Marion
2. Paul Pierce
3. Joe Johnson
4. Brad Miller
5. Emeka Okafor
6. Jameer Nelson
7. Ricky Davis
8. Chris Wilcox
9. Andre Miller
10. Steve Francis
11. Kevin Martin
12. Nenad Krstic
13. Deron Williams

Also, these players were just dropped. Anybody worth picking up and dropping?
Speedy Claxton
Udonis Haslem
Gary Payton
Kurt Thomas
James Posey
Anthony Johnson

You have a pretty good team there. Wilcox, Kevin Martin are good picks.

I'd take Speedy Claxton of those dropped

I would add David West for points, shooting %, rebounding, Chris Paul for assists and steals, and Raja Bell for 3 pointers. I think Josh Howard is a great pick but I have no idea what area of the draft he is going.

Having done two drafts yesterday, I noticed a few guys like Mo Peterson, Brevin Knight, Mike Dunleavy, and Raja Bell going lower than I think they should.

Had a draft last night. Here's who I ended up with.

1. (8) E. Brand PF
2. (13) C. Bosh PF,C
3. (28) R. Lewis SF
4. (33) P. Stojakovic SF
5. (48) M. James PG
6. (53) J. Terry PG
7. (68) M. Ginobili SG
8. (73) R. Bell SG
9. (88) R. Davis SG,SF
10. (93) C. Wilcox PF,C
11. (108) J. Crawford SG
12. (113) M. Dunleavy SF

I think I may have made a bad pick or two. Ginobili I wasn't sure about but I really needed a SG at the time. Also Terry may have been a little bit of a stretch but I wasn't sure if Mike James was going to pan out, so...

I guess it depends on your scoring system. Under the system I play, Brand at 8 is nice and Bosh at 13 should be fine so long a his foot injury isn't serious (I'm a bit worried so I'd probably have gone elsewhere). Ginobili, Bell, and Davis that late seem like great picks. I'm not a fan of Mike James in the 4th round, he really peaked last year and won't repeat. Terry and Lewis seem like decent picks too. I like Dunleavy as a sleeper, but less so for Crawford (coming off the bench) and Wilcox (horrible preseason with Collison looking good)

Seems too high for Okafur, who wasn't that great when healthy last year. His scoring is a question now too with Morrison and others around. Ditto for Wilcox, as I would have waited a few rounds on him. He's not been impressive this preseason. Martin I'd probably just drop for Johnson or Claxton

New to Fantasy Bball as well, and did an auto draft in a Yahoo head to head league. That was a mistake, I ended up with six point guards:

1. (7) G. Arenas PG
2. (14) C. Paul PG
3. (27) R. Lewis SF
4. (34) P. Gasol PF,C
5. (47) J. Terry PG
6. (54) Z. Ilgauskas C
7. (67) M. Peterson SG,SF
8. (74) C. Maggette SG,SF
9. (87) S. Dalembert C
10. (94) A. Miller PG
11. (107) J. Childress SG,SF
12. (114) M. Williams PG
13. (127) S. Parker PG

Default league starts a LOT of players: PG,SG,G,SF,PF,F,C,C,Util,Util, but 6 PGs and only one PF? Any thoughts before I trade away some PGs for some forwards?

Also, I'm a little confused as to how this works... it seems like you can change your roster every day, and this rewards someone who will micromanage his team and set the roster to players that are playing every day. Is this how Fantasy Basketball head to head usually works?

Yes you set your roster every day. But you can just set it for each day of the week at the beginning of the week.

Look at your league rules as each is different. There are generally two types of H2H leagues, ones where you set your roster at the beginning of the week (and can't change it the rest of the week so knowing how many games each team plays is important) or ones where you can change the roster every day but have a weekly game limit.

As for your PGs, I'd probably dump Smush, keep the rest and trade any of the lower ones Miller, Williams, or Terry for forward help. Williams and Miller should have decent value actually, so you did good getting them late. Terry may have the most immediate value for trade. I'd keep Paul and Arenas if possible. But you will need a PF as Gasol is out for at least a month, probably 2 or more.

I know I'm loaded up with PGs already, but what does everyone think of Livingston? Granted, I'm a Clipper fan, but he is taking over the starting job and he does have talent.

Didn't realize Gasol was out until Jan, now I regret putting him so high on my list. Looks like I'll have to trade for a PF sooner than later.

I think Livingston will be good but I think Cassell will still eat into Livingston's minutes.

My sleeper is Jarret Jack. Plus, I think Zach Randolph will also be pretty underrated since he didn't have a good year last year.

In my 5 player fantasy league: I have Bogut and he's been doing alright, but I don't see him putting up big numbers (yet)

Wally Z isn't picked up and he is off to a pretty good year. High FG and FT% too. Think its smart to give up Bogut this early?

I'd keep Bogut, unless you've got a better option at Center. He'll probably put up better numbers across that board than Wally anyways.

Wally had way more value than Bogut last year in my league and I don't see Bogut catching him this year. I don't know what your league rules are, but Wally is pretty useful in FG, FT, 3P, and Points

Yeah, I don't know about Bogut, I see him being an 18 and 10 guy, but then again Wally is shooting lights out and has one of the best FT% in the league.

Tough decision....
