oh lordy lordy.... don't dig yourselves too deep a hole White Sox.

Time is of the essence! Hope and optimism remain, but their evil twins despair and angst await their cue.

Today may decide the World Series winner

I was seriously thinking this all week, before I read the article online today, but....

If Liriano is back to his pre-injury form, the Twins take it all.

That would make me extremely happy, but I've gotta think that Radke will try to come back for the playoffs, and he will blow several starts. I'm not sure if that is preferable to using the rookies that are in the rotation now or not.

I think if either Boof or Silva keep pitching like they have the last 2 games each, then they become the 3rd starter and Radke and everybody else goes to the bullpen.

But maybe Radke wouldn't be so good in the pen, Radke is great, but isn't his first inning usually his worst?

But seriously; Santana, Liriano, and I would most likely win any playoff series.

Yeah, Boof has done well since getting shelled in his earlier starts this year. I am confident with Silva as well, he has his moments. Provided Lirano stays healthy, it will likely boot Scott Baker/Matt Garza from the rotation, which is a very good thing. Radke always gets behind early, giving up home runs in the first and second that he can't recover from. Not optimal in the playoffs. Liriano is pitching in about an hour, so we'll see how it goes!

Sucks for the Twins, but this gives me hope as a Sox fan for those last 3 games at Minnesota now. If only they can survive this west coast trip...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano, making his first start in more than a month, left in the third inning of Wednesday's game with left elbow pain.

Liriano came off the disabled list earlier this week after being shelved since Aug. 8 with a strained ligament in his throwing arm. The Twins hoped his return to the starting rotation would be the boost they needed to carry them to the postseason.

The 22-year-old Dominican went 12-3 with a 2.19 ERA and was one of the favorites for the AL rookie of the year award before injuring his arm. Before, he combined with ace Johan Santana to form one of the most formidable one-two punches in the majors.

He breezed through the first two innings on Wednesday against Oakland, throwing just 22 pitches. But after giving up a bloop single to Nick Swisher to start the third inning, Liriano came off the mound awkwardly after throwing a ball to Bobby Kielty.

Team trainers and manager Ron Gardenhire came out to look at Liriano while the home crowd held its breath. After a short meeting, Liriano was pulled from the game and replaced by fellow rookie Matt Garza.

With the Marlins continuing to amaze, why does manager Joe Girardi remain in jeopardy of losing his job at season's end? Baseball officials close to the situation say the main issue has been this: owner Jeffrey Loria likes his organization run collectively, with the front office having input beyond player procurement. And too often, Girardi has resisted those suggestions, causing a significant strain between him and the front office, including GM Larry Beinfest.

The Devil Rays are preparing a new look for the 2008 season - new colors, uniforms, logo and, perhaps, even a new name. And although the team says it likely will keep the name "Tampa Bay," officials are at least considering changing to "Florida." The name "Florida" is used by the Marlins, but politicians there have said they would want the Marlins to change to "Miami" as a caveat for building a new stadium.
-- Tampa Tribune

Through an intermediary, David Ortiz let Derek Jeter know yesterday that he had nothing against the Yankees shortstop and his chances to be the next American League MVP. Ortiz was upset about how his comments after Sunday's game at Fenway Park created a brushfire when the Yankees media ran the comments by Jeter.
-- Boston Herald

Under increasing public and media pressure to bench him, make him a part-time player or perhaps decide against re-signing him for the 2007 season, the Astros have wrestled with the great Craig Biggio question. Biggio intends to play one more season, but if his pursuit of 3,000 hits cannot continue in Houston, he will play elsewhere, Biggio told the Chronicle on Tuesday.
-- Houston Chronicle

Third baseman Joe Crede declined to elaborate Tuesday on the condition of his lower back or his future with the White Sox, but his high-profile agent defused the perception his client's days are numbered in Chicago.
-- Chicago Tribune

The interest in Ryan Howard after he earned top rookie honors? Cool. The interest in Howard before he earned top rookie honors? Cooler. Multiple sources said the Pirates, Twins and Mariners expressed some interest in Howard, but none ever really stepped up with a serious offer.
-- Philadelphia Inquirer

Look for the Phillies to try again this offseason to move Pat Burrell's contract, and convince him to waive his complete no-trade clause. He wouldn't do it July to go to the Orioles, and the Phillies hope he reconsiders his position.
-- MLB.com

Securing closer Francisco Rodriguez to a long-term contract will be among the Angels' top priorities this off-season after the sides were unable to agree to terms on a multiyear deal last winter.
-- Los Angeles Times

The Mets deployed scout Russ Bove to Japan this week to watch Daisuke Matsuzaka, who will be aggressively pursued this November if the Seibu Lions decide to make their star righthander available through the posting process.
-- Newsday

Gary Sheffield took 40 swings indoors, then joined batting practice for the first time since having surgery for a dislocated tendon and ligament tear in his left wrist. Yankee manager Joe Torre said Sheffield might be activated by the end of the homestand Sunday night, but offered no guarantee.
-- New York Post

With 2 1/2 weeks left in the regular season, A's manager Ken Macha is no longer counting on having shortstop Bobby Crosby back this year.
-- San Francisco Chronicle

Tigers rookie right-hander Joel Zumaya has tendinitis in his pitching wrist and won't pitch in the two-game series with Texas, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. The earliest Zumaya would be available to pitch would be Friday against Baltimore, although it's not clear if he'll be ready then.
-- Detroit Free Press

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and his coaching staff met Tuesday to tinker with the idea of shuffling the starting rotation or possibly skipping a pitcher who might be struggling. At least for now, however, they will stay the course. With Thursday a day off, one possibility could be pushing Jose Contreras back a day so that he pitches on Monday against Detroit, rather than Sunday in Oakland.
-- Chicago Sun-Times

Geoff Jenkins, the Brewers' most tenured player and highest-paid position player doesn't know if he's coming or going. It might be difficult to trade Jenkins during the off-season, but it also might be difficult to bring him back as a reserve outfielder, given his salary and the organization's plans for the future.
-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder had a partial tear in his left rotator cuff stitched together in surgery Tuesday, a procedure that may delay the normal offseason routine he had planned but is not expected to change his availability for spring training.
-- St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Cardinals CF Jim Edmonds repeated his familiar story Tuesday. He feels marginally better, but postconcussion syndrome symptoms remain, and there's no guarantee he will play again this season. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Edmonds has been cleared to play by doctors, but the team is waiting for Edmonds to tell them the symptoms have completely disappeared.
-- Belleville News-Democrat

The Rockies are not expected to pick up Jose Mesa's $3 million club option, instead exercising a $515,000 escape clause. In most cases, when a team buys out a player, there is no chance of a reunion. Mesa, however, said Tuesday he would consider re-signing with the Rockies when and if his option is declined.
-- Denver Post

Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said if right-hander Jose Valverde continues to pitch well down the stretch, the closer's job will be his to lose when the club heads to spring training in February.
-- Arizona Republic

Mike Lieberthal is back. But is his back? Lieberthal, who has not played since Sept. 3 because of lower back spasms, rejoined the team yesterday at Turner Field. He said he feels fine and is ready to play, but the team wants to see for itself first.

You're not watching? It's on ESPN. Good game from Garza, but Harden has been better. 1-0 Oakland top of ninth.
