Cal Ripken Jr. says he would consider purchasing the Orioles if owner Peter G. Angelos put the club up for sale. Ripken has expressed interest not only in investing in a big league club but also in running its baseball operations.
-- Baltimore Sun

Dusty Baker is going to try to wipe the Cubs' stink off him and get another job, but it may not be easy. He has been linked to jobs in Seattle and San Diego, but Bruce Bochy has a year left on his Padres deal and in the unlikely event the Pads eat that, Art Howe is a decent bet to reunite with Sandy Alderson.
-- Daily Herald

Rangers owner Tom Hicks said Tuesday that his team has lacked mental toughness and leadership this season. Hicks also said general manager Jon Daniels has given him no reason to believe it was necessary to make a managerial change. In addition, Hicks said he had been trying to find out if manager Buck Showalter's style was wearing on his players.
-- Dallas Morning News

The Diamondbacks are reportedly planning a change in uniform colors for next season, apparently dumping their purple, teal, copper and black scheme for one that will include something called "Sedona Red" and a "sand" hue.
-- Arizona Republic

He is not talking now, so if the Angels are to make an offseason move to acquire Miguel Tejada, then Orlando Cabrera will have to be more forthcoming behind closed doors. Talks could fire up again this winter if Cabrera -- the current Angels shortstop -- would agree to a position change to third or even second base.
-- Los Angeles Daily News

Don't expect the Rays to take the next step and move Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli anytime soon for minimum-salaried kids. After eight years of largely negative public perception under former owner Vince Naimoli, the Rays are working hard to rebuild their fan base and wary of doing anything to stem that momentum.
-- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Ken Griffey Jr. might request Sept. 4 off next season. If it weren't for back luck, as they say, the Reds outfielder would have no luck at all on that day. Griffey dislocated the second toe on his right foot Monday. Last year on Sept. 4, he sprained his right foot rounding second.
-- Cincinnati Enquirer

If Francisco Liriano returns to the Twins' rotation Sept. 14, as the team hopes, he'll have time to make four starts before the regular season ends. Johan Santana likely has five more starts remaining, and assuming the Twins keep him on a five-day schedule, he is lined up to pitch the Oct. 1 season finale against Chicago. So the Twins could reach Sept. 14 with Liriano and Santana available to start eight of the their final 18 games.
-- Minneapolis Star Tribune

Jason Giambi was planning to shave off his mustache Monday night anyway, but when he saw the clippers during the game he figured there was no point in waiting any longer. So after striking out in the first inning, Giambi went back into the clubhouse and emerged a little later sans 'stache, hoping a change in facial hair might help spark a change in his results at the plate.
-- New York Daily News

Mariano Rivera received treatment on the elbow before batting practice Tuesday and did not play catch. Joe Torre will not use him until this weekend at the earliest.
-- New York Times

Brian Anderson, who is struggling through a rough rookie season, won't be guaranteed the White Sox's starting center-field job in 2007, manager Ozzie Guillen said Tuesday.
-- Chicago Tribune

The White Sox are hoping to have closer Bobby Jenks back with the team for tonight's series finale with the Red Sox. The Sox received word late Tuesday that Jenks' MRI was normal, but his status remains uncertain.
-- Chicago Sun-Times

Craig Counsell isn't ruling anything out. He's not angry. He's just telling it like he sees it, and right now, he doesn't see himself with the Diamondbacks in 2007. Counsell, 36, would like to find a job playing every day, either at second base or shortstop.
-- Arizona Republic

Willie Randolph, a devout old-school manager, didn't care for Lastings Milledge's occasional nonchalance, his impatience at the plate and his well-chronicled high-fiving of fans in rightfield after his first major-league homer June 4. But when it comes to making a decision on a possible fifth outfielder on the postseason roster, Randolph is old school enough to go for the player who can best help him win.
-- Newsday

Pedro Martinez said he threw 60-plus pitches in a bullpen session yesterday at Shea Stadium and, "It went fine." Martinez, assuming he feels healthy today, is next aiming to throw a simulated game, perhaps on Saturday.
-- New York Post

Chad Billingsley threw 75 pitches on flat ground and felt good, increasing the probability that he will make a start against the Chicago Cubs next week.
-- Los Angeles Times

Mike Lieberthal's back is in bad shape. The Phillies catcher is expected to miss at least a week after suffering back spasms, which is why the team purchased the contract of catcher Tim Gradoville from double-A Reading.

Okay, based on the team's last two games, Jose Contreras will pitch a complete game shutout and the White Sox will still lose...

WOW. GAME OVER. NO HITTER.

First no hitter since 2004. First rookie to do it since 2001.

ChiSox pounding the BoSox. Tigers lose. Twins losing.

Once Joe Crede hits another home run, the WhiteSox will have 4 players with at least 30 home runs and 90 rbi's. wow

As much as it pains me to see my own team get no hit, I love to see it as a baseball fan.

It's not like Josh Beckett has had a terrible year by any means, though.

But when the Sox really needed him to buckle down during that pivotal series vs. the Yanks, he completely choked-- took a huge L and walked 9
