MLB Thursday 08/31/06- Pavano's rear end pains...

didnt see a thread for today so i thought i would start it with this...

-------------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK -- Carl Pavano is now complaining of shoulder pain, the latest in a series of ailments for the New York Yankees' $40 million pitcher.

Pavano is telling Yankees officials that his shoulder is now bothering him, in addition to his ribs, a source told SI.com. Pavano broke two ribs in an Aug. 15 car accident in West Palm Beach, Fla., but didn't reveal the accident or injuries to the team until nearly two weeks later, upsetting the Yankees. His new complaint is that his hurt ribs are causing him shoulder pain when he pitches.

Pavano revealed his new pain Wednesday, when he was examined in New York by team physician Stuart Hershon. The Yankees plan to talk further with Pavano, who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since June 2005, but there are no plans to use him for at least two weeks.

Pavano has complained of a variety of ailments this year, including a pain in the buttocks.

Just a few weeks ago, it was a nearly impossible ticket to get -- the Red Sox at home. Now, tickets to Sox games are not only available, they can be had for face value or less. Even though the Sox have sold out every game since May 15, 2003, there is no guarantee that the streak will continue through the rest of the season.
-- Boston Globe

In the bidding for veteran left-hander David Wells, the Padres appeared to be the front-runners Wednesday night, while the Dodgers remained unwilling to include their top prospects -- Matt Kemp, James Loney or Andy LaRoche -- in trade discussions with the fading Boston Red Sox. According to league sources, Boston General Manager Theo Epstein's interest appears to be in Padres' triple-A catcher George Kottaras.
-- Los Angeles Times

Not long after the Red Sox sent 22-year-old left-hander Jon Lester back to Boston to be evaluated by club medical officials, sources indicated that one of the club's most promising players is dealing with more than just a bad back. Among the possibilities: Lester has cancer.
-- Boston Herald

While Dusty Baker may be gone when his contract expires in October, he's not going to be fired. General manager Jim Hendry was livid Wednesday over a published report that suggested he may change his mind about Baker's status and fire him before his four-year deal ends after the regular season.
-- Chicago Tribune

Giants manager Felipe Alou said Wednesday night what a lot of others have been thinking: What Barry Bonds does in September -- specifically, how many home runs he hits -- will help determine whether he plays in 2007.
-- San Francisco Chronicle

Andy Pettitte isn't making any plans publicly, and Astros general manager Tim Purpura says he'll approach Pettitte's agents, Alan and Randy Hendricks, at some point soon. But retirement must be less of an option.
-- Houston Chronicle

The Dodgers have expressed interest in Cubs pinch hitter John Mabry, who has cleared waivers.
-- Chicago Tribune

Rangers owner Tom Hicks said the team remains interested in all three of its potential free-agent starters: Vicente Padilla, Adam Eaton and Kip Wells. Padilla stands to command the most money and longest commitment.
-- Dallas Morning News

The Marlins were one of a half-dozen teams pursuing veteran reliever Rudy Seanez, released this week by the Red Sox.
-- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Although it's highly unlikely the Yankees will be able to void the $21 million and two years left on Carl Pavano's contract, Brian Cashman refused to rule it out, saying he could not do so without seeing all of the facts.
-- Newsday

Mariano Rivera has experienced inflammation in his right elbow and will have a precautionary M.R.I. on the elbow soon, perhaps today.
-- New York Times

Cubs starter Sean Marshall is expected to make his return Saturday after rehabbing a strained oblique muscle that has had him on the disabled list since July 23. How the Cubs intend to fit Wade Miller in the rotation the rest of the season remains to be seen, but Carlos Marmol will go to the bullpen when he returns from his biceps soreness.
-- Chicago Tribune

The Pirates have floated the idea of going to a six-man starting rotation in September in order to protect their young starters' arms. The Florida Marlins are considering the same idea.
-- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Brad Radke might have thrown the last pitch of his career. The Twins decided Wednesday the veteran pitcher will not make Saturday's start against New York at Yankee Stadium, and his status during the final month of the season is uncertain.
-- St. Paul Pioneer Press

Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he got no calls on Geoff Jenkins, who was removed as the regular right fielder but has a contract that pays him $7 million next year.
-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Randy Winn wasn't in the lineup Tuesday night. The Giants said it was a scheduled off day. They also said Winn has had irritation in his right knee since May. The Giants don't seem overly concerned and expect Winn to play the rest of the nine-game trip.
-- San Francisco Chronicle

Pavano should be introduced to pain he hasn't experienced yet. Knee pain.

I really hope Lester is going to be ok. Cancer is something I don't wish on anyone. I hope the kid gets some good news about his condition.

A couple of tv stations in Boston are saying that David Wells has been traded. Still not sure to who and for what. He was scratched from his start tonight and is being replaced by...Julian Tavarez.

You seem to be forgetting the "wonderful" Jays performance on Halladay last outing against KC.

Lots of restraint being shown in the form of nobody wishing Lester's cancer onto Tavarez.

Wow, 3 runs for the Red Sox so far!

And it looks like Wells was traded to SD for catching prospect George Kottaras.

So the Padres just gave up one of thier top prospects, George Kottaras (we've been hearing about this guy for the past couple years) for David Wells. Not sure if I like this deal.

Kottaras is a masher. I've seen him play for our AAA team here locally.

I was reading (was it here?) that Sox tickets can currently be had for face value. I'm not enjoying the freefall by any stretch, but the purging of the wagon is nice to see at least.

EDIT: Oh, it was in this thread. I can't keep up anymore.
