Boy, I'm stoked the Red Sox get to play their "regional rivals" this weekend. It should get ugly.

Subway Series should be a good one this year.

I made a $50 bar bet last night that the Braves would finish ahead of the Phils. I will always accept a bet if someone is betting against the Braves in the regular season.

Derrek Lee said he hopes to be back in a Cubs uniform in three weeks, which suggests he could be ready to play June 13 against Houston at Wrigley Field. Though he's still wearing a small cast, Lee took some swings before Thursday's game, playing soft toss in the batting cage under the right-field bleachers. Lee is to have his cast removed May 31 and may not even need a rehab stint in the minors. He said he prefers to work out with the team and believes he can get ready in about 10 days. -- Chicago Tribune

If Kerry Wood improves, he becomes a leading candidate to be dealt by the trade deadline if the Cubs can't get back in the race. As is stands now, there's no way the Cubs would pick up his $13.5 million option for 2007, instead buying him out for $3 million. Before that happens, and the price of pitching being what it is, the Cubs might try to re-sign Wood to a multiyear deal for a lot less. If they can't and they're out of the chase, the Cubs would have to consider moving him. -- Daily Herald

A Dodgers scout watched the three-game series with the Sox and Devil Rays, and the Dodgers are expected to keep a close watch on the Sox's organization for pitching help with struggling left-hander Odalis Perez on the disabled list and journeyman Aaron Sele filling in. But the Dodgers also are looking for a third baseman with Bill Mueller out with knee surgery and Tampa Bay's Aubrey Huff could be available. -- Chicago Tribune

As reporters questioned Angels Manager Mike Scioscia after an 8-4, 10-inning loss to the Blue Jays, a heated argument between two or more players could be heard from the shower area. Moments later, the screaming voice of Darin Erstad, on the disabled list but still very much the team's leader, could be heard loud and clear. "This is going to stop right... now," Erstad yelled. "There's going to be no finger-pointing, I don't care who you are." -- Los Angeles Times

The Red Sox have indicated to J.T. Snow that they will look into trading him, the seldom-used first baseman's agent said yesterday. The Los Angeles Angels are one possible destination for Snow. -- Boston Herald

Coco Crisp's agent said yesterday the Red Sox center fielder has ''started to swing the bat a little bit" and that Crisp should be back ''in a relatively short period of time." One club source thinks Crisp will be back by the end of the month. -- Boston Globe

Carl Pavano, who was supposed to be the Yankees' No. 3 starter, left his start for Class AA Trenton after one inning on Wednesday night with tightness in his right triceps. In an ominous sign, Pavano said he felt the same sensation in 2000, when triceps tendinitis led to elbow surgery. -- New York Times

Melvin Mora took a physical yesterday and has verbally agreed to a three-year deal with an option for a fourth season worth a guaranteed $25 million, said sources with knowledge of the negotiations. -- Baltimore Sun

This weekend, Felipe Alou expects to write Barry Bonds' name in the Giants' lineup card as the DH three times as they play the A's in Oakland. In past years Bonds has complained about being a DH because he did not know how to occupy his time between at-bats, although the numbers suggest he figured it out. -- San Francisco Chronicle

With Barry Bonds rarely talking, Felipe Alou has been asked to speak about him and for him twice a day, which is beginning to take a toll. "I'm not here to be the spokesperson for Barry," Alou told The Chronicle in a quieter moment Wednesday. -- San Francisco Chronicle

For years, teams have been overshifting their defenses against A's third baseman Eric Chavez, expecting him to pull the ball hard. Chavez is not a big fan of the strategy. "I hate that. I hate the whole numbers thing," Chavez said. "You should play the game the way it's supposed to be played. If a guy's a pull hitter, you play him to pull a little bit. It's ridiculous, it shouldn't be played like that." -- Oakland Tribune

Catcher Dioner Navarro is eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday but isn't close to being activated because he cannot swing a bat without pain. Navarro has a bruised right wrist as a result of a foul tip. Rookie Russell Martin is batting .294 in 11 games after going four for 11 in three games at Colorado. The Dodgers do not plan to send Martin back to triple A when Navarro is healthy. -- Los Angeles Times

Bartolo Colon is experiencing what pitching coach Bud Black described as "a little dead arm," a condition that has slowed the return of the Angels ace, who has been on the disabled list since April 16. The Angels were hoping Colon, sidelined by an inflamed shoulder, would throw a simulated game Thursday and perhaps begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment this weekend, but that timetable has been pushed back. Colon, who last threw Tuesday, will try to throw in the bullpen again today. -- Los Angeles Times

Shawn Chacon will miss his next start, the Yankees said yesterday. He's the lucky one. Reliever Tanyon Sturtze has opted for surgery on his right shoulder, "probably" ending his season, according to manager Joe Torre. -- Newark Star-Ledger

The Pirates yesterday placed center fielder Chris Duffy on the minor-league restricted list for failing to report to Class AAA Indianapolis within 72 hours of being optioned there Sunday. It was not immediately clear why Duffy refused his assignment. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The White Sox reached multiyear extensions Thursday with five coaches but will wait until the end of this season to determine the future of bench coach Tim Raines. Signing Cooper to an extension defuses speculation he might leave to join the New York Yankees after this season. Manager Ozzie Guillen said Raines' situation would be discussed with general manager Ken Williams. -- Chicago Tribune

Lefthander Randy Wolf, who had Tommy John surgery July 1, will make his first rehabilitation start Tuesday in Clearwater, Fla. "He's on schedule," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said yesterday. Gillick estimates that Wolf could return to the Phillies before the all-star break begins on July 10. -- Philadelphia Inquirer

Liberty Media chairman John Malone said the Colorado-based company "certainly would enjoy owning the Braves and watching them come to Denver and win" against the Rockies, but he acknowledged that Ted Turner probably wouldn't be part of Liberty's lineup. -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The best record in baseball currently is held by the DETROIT TIGERS! And it's not just after 10 games, it's about 40 games into the season. I am loving the 2006 baseball season! It has been SO long since Detroit has had a good team.

I think it's safe to say.....they are out of the chase. The only teams i could see picking up Woods radiculos contract are the Orioles, Dodgers, or Mets, or Yankees. Since they love to overspend on underproducers.

I guess Toronto and Colorado were the only two teams left after MLB scheduled all of the "regional" matchups this weekend.

Looks like all Buehrle needed to get back on track was to face the Cubs

A complete game with only giving up an unearned is by far his best performance since April.
