Lots of good first round series. Does anyone know if the non-OLN/NBC games will be available on Center Ice?

Bettman: Refs will make calls, or else

Canadian Press

4/19/2006 3:01:36 PM

Commissioner Gary Bettman says officials who don't call penalties as warranted during the NHL playoffs will soon find themselves watching the post-season from the sidelines.

That message has been made clear to Colin Campbell, senior executive vice-president of hockey operations, and Stephen Walkom, director of officiating, he said on a conference call Wednesday.

"My instructions to Colie and to Stephen are if an official puts his whistle away, they should put the official away for the rest of the playoffs," Bettman said.

"How long you work in the playoffs is discretionary. It depends how well you are working. And if a guy decides he's putting the whistle away, then he's done."

Added Walkom: "If they see a foul in the game, I full expect they'll react to it."

Walkom said the league has scheduled a meeting for Thursday with officials overseeing each playoff series. That will be followed with a conference call Friday with the on-ice personnel.

"The instructions to the referees . . . are identical to that of the regular season," he said.

"We just want them to go out there and call the game the way they called it in the regular season and recognize that when they do they'll be supported," he added.

Campbell said the league is committed to the new rules, because it spent months during the lockout studying what was needed to free up the game.

"Fans needed to be entertained and our game wasn't that entertaining because coaches were good. Coaches knew how to instil left-wing locks, traps _ and combined with holding and hooking and pushing the envelope as far as you could . . . coaches knew what you could get away with."

In 2003-04, teams rarely blew leads going into the third period because they could batten down the hatches and shut down the opposing team, he said.

Compare that to the current NHL landscape, he added.

"Now fans don't have to leave the game at the end of the second period, saying `well we know what the outcome's going be."'

Campbell also reminded reporters the new NHL involves more than new rules _ it features enforcement of old rules.

"The referees had to learn, as well as the players had to learn," he said.

Bettman said the fact the league is calling more penalties should not be seen as a problem.

"That was the solution to opening up the game," Bettman said. "If the officials aren't adhering to the standards, then the game clogs up."

"There's no quota, but you've got to call it when you see it, otherwise the players will adjust and they will do whatever the officials will permit them to do on the ice," he added. "And that will be to neutralize skills if given the chance."

Bettman said there were almost 13,000 fewer stoppages this season than in 2003-04 as a result of rule changes involving the "tag-up" offside, elimination of two-line pass and waving off of potential icings. Plus stick fouls were down 30 per cent, the lowest level in 35 years.

Ok, Bettman just made sure we'll see about 20 pp's per game for at least the first few games of each series.

The league or the people who make these stats, should have (SO) and not just (OT) at the end of a result of a game that went past 3 periods.

Some of the games listed as having (OT) results were shootouts and I'd like to be able to know whether a team won in the 5 minute OT or in a SO, because I give a little more weight to a win in a standard OT.

I hope Bufallo goes far, especially since that would mean Philadelphia goes home in the first round.

I think the 2 best matchups are Calgary-Anaheim and Nashville-SJ. I firmly believe the cumulative winner of those 2 series will win the cup. Man, SJ is on fire - if Nabokov or Toskala can get hot...look out. However, Kipper can steal the whole damn thing if he continues to play well.

In the east...I'd LOVE to see Buffalo knock the Cryers out right off the bat, and then watch them run to the finals. I think, once again, the Sens are too fragile in net, unless HAsek comes back at 100% and catches fire...

I'm rooting for Colorado (Go, Coach Q!) and Edmonton (#44, of course).

In the East - maybe Buffalo.

I'll watch the Dallas-Colorado series and since CBC will be showing all of the Canadian based teams, I'll be watching that too.

Go Avs!

I don't follow the east much, but I think that NY vs. NJ series will be nice and gritty.

Kind of scary, though, Yzerman was the best forward on both teams tonight. Dats, Hank, and others need to pick it up. Lang and Shanny were hot and cold.

So far, all three games have been won by the top seeds, but all were very close. Ottawa finally came back in the third period for a 4-1 win, but it was a lot closer than the score suggests. My Red Wings pulled it off in double OT. The Wings have a habit of running into hot goalies in the playoffs, and they did again tonight. They outshot the Oilers but just squeeked by. Nashville was able to pull out a victory in the last period after giving up a two goal lead.

Malts is a money playoff player, 5 goals all season...2 in the first playoff game.

That second period was a little worrisome and the Wings have to start taking better shots, every other shot was blocked.

Hopefully Datsyuk gets back soon, he will certainly help in breaking up that horrid trap Edmonton was using...

Bummer for Roloson on that OT goal being deflected cuz he played great but looks like the Oilers might give the Wings a good series.

The Preds/Sharks game was some really good hockey as i expected for these two teams and watching them made me feel even worse havin to watch the Leafs all season and seeing how these teams skate and play so well.

And lastly....Go Flames!

I don't think I've watched more than 2 games on OLN and that was only because I had to, but this has been a total failure for the NHL.

The game is so much better and so exciting, but I buy the package while the average fan won't do that.

OLN totally went out for a minute (a minute in game time, not actual time) in the last 2 minutes of the Wings game with Edmonton on a PP.

Now, they are using a CBC feed for the Calgary/Anaheim and they went black for 5 minutes...they didn't even go to the studio or have anyone or anything ready to go, then they went to some commericals after the 5 minutes, then cut back to the game, then lost it again and they went to the studio and, basically, we missed the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period.

That's junior varsity. I guess that's what Bettman thinks is good for the NHL.

By the way, the refs did put the whistles away in the double OT game, just like you would have expected in the past. The Oilers got away with a lot and the Wings got a break too. But zero calls in either OT and I fully expect nothing to happen, like guys watching games instead of calling them if they put the whistles away like Bettman said he'd do.

This OLN coverage is terrible. Feeds dropping, skipping chunks of the game. Too bad ESPN didn't renew their contract. Playoff hockey on ESPN was awesome.

Flames win.

Sharks better figure out how to stop Nashville's power play or else it's going to be a short series.

Still, that was a helluva 3rd period.
