I get a good laugh when I look at the standings for the NL East and the NL West.

Though I'm sure I wouldn't be laughing if one of my favorite teams were in the midst of that crap.

Yeah the National league is way soft, can't see anything but another American League WS victory, only real team is the cardinals. That west is a tragedy, the shouldn't allow a team out of there in the playoffs..

his comment was on how tough the east is from top to bottom, and how weak the west is from top to bottom

and the only 2 teams to really stand out in either league so far.. are the white sox and cardinals..

I can see something other than another AL World Series victory!!!

Eh, who am I kidding? The Cardinals aren't going to win shit this year.

well.. Ive liked the white sox since they drafted big frank... but if they manage to pick up junior before the end of the season.. I would become a big WS fan.. and this could be a good year to jump on that bandwagon

I think two teams winning the Series two years in a row after severe droughts is just too much to ask of the baseball gods.

I agree, I don't understand how the NL is soft, it seems to be the far superior league in terms of depth. And as for who will win the WS, it's almost random over such a short series.

See I don't see it as depth, I see it as mediocrity, which doesn't mean strong imho.

Somebody can prob dig up the American Vs National league head to head numbers interleague play, that would prob be a good gauge, I could be way off about who has done better with those numbers.

Such as short series? It's 7 games.. I wouldn't call that random.

I could see the Red Sox, Chi Sox, or even the Yanks if they make the playoffs, win the WS. National league, only team I think has a chance the Cards, but don't see them beating any of those teams.

I think NL lost about 20 more games than won verse the AL.

I'm an NL homer, but the AL is clearly superior right now. Aside from the Cards (if healthy), I'm not sure anyone from the NL could win a 7 game series against Boston, Chicago, LA, or Oakland, and I'd be tempted to put my money on Cleveland and even Minnesota (although they're having a rough stretch now) as well. With their aces healthy, maybe Atlanta or Houston squeezes out a 5 game series, but not 7.

Well the thing is, even great baseball teams pretty much win only 60% of the time. And that's against everybody, including the dregs like the D-Rays, Royals, whoever. What's worse, is that great teams tend to also have depth, meaning good 5th starters and deep bullpens. Factors which are largely irrelevant in playoff ball. So now you're weakening the best teams.

Then you're playing elite teams. In the playoffs you play other teams with high winning percentages, be it 55%, 58% or whatever. You put two teams of fairly equal talent against each other and play a 5 or 7 game series, it IS pretty much luck. Sure the better team should be expected to win more, and would be the favorite, but only by a slim margin.

It's almost like flipping a coin. You flip 10 times, you should expect 5 heads and 5 tails. But it doesn't always work like that. If you flip enough times, it will even out to 50% for each. Just like the good teams even out over 62 games of a baseball season. But the good teams are rarely dominant enough to just destroy other teams in the postseason. And now with three rounds of postseason play, it works even more against the real good teams.

The simple fact is that baseball teams are just not as dominant as elite football or basketball teams. So you can't really compare to those sports. In baseball, the better team doesn't always win. Which is partly why baseball has had wild-card teams win the last three world series when it's almost unheard of for football (Baltimore Ravens did manage to do it though). You need more games to say which team is truely the better team.

Apparently, the Cardinals' top prospect, Anthony Reyes, has checked into the team's hotel in Milwaukee. Rumor has it that he will start tomorrow night because LaRussa wants to give the rotation some rest.

Weird happenings in Boston, aside from the batting practice-style 1st inning. Jose Cruz has been DFA'd, Meuller was scratched for back spasms, Youkilis was called up, and Cora's playing third again (). Sure, Cruz only cost them 2 very expendable prospects, but why DFA him so early? I'm guessing he said something to piss off the brass. Of course, if I was watching Millar start in RF against righties, I might say something, too.

Hahahaha. Maybe Cruz was "required" to play in a voluntary charity golf tournament like he was here in AZ, and bitched about it.

I used to think Wade Miller was a fantastic bargain. I used to think that refrigerator ice/water dispensers worked because of magic, too, so what the hell do I know?
