Sheffield claims mag writer 'lied'

TORONTO - Derek Jeter played catch with Gary Sheffield behind the batting cage yesterday. Alex Rodriguez said he's "very close with Gary" and considers him a "great teammate." Most of the rest of the Yankees just shrugged off Sheffield's rant in next week's New York magazine - in which he seemed to take a subtle shot at Jeter and A-Rod - as the outspoken outfielder's latest tirade and went about their daily business.

Sheffield, however, said he was unfairly targeted by the author of the piece and went so far as to say the writer "lied" about what he said.

"There's a lot of things in there that he made up to juice up the story," Sheffield said before last night's 6-2 Yankee victory over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Privately, several teammates were skeptical of Sheffield's explanation and wondered why he would say anything about his teammates that could be construed as negative. But nobody was surprised that an interview with Sheffield turned volatile, since it seems that controversy is never far away from the 36-year-old slugger.

In the article, which Sheffield claims was set up by his publicist with the idea that it would be a "positive" piece, Sheffield is quoted as saying, "I know who the leader is on the team. I ain't going to say who it is, but I know who it is. I know who the team feeds off. I know who the opposing team comes in knowing they have to defend to stop the Yankees. . . . I know this. The people don't know. Why? The media don't want them to know. They want to promote two players in a positive light, and everyone else is garbage."

Serena Torrey, a spokesperson for New York, said the magazine "stands by Stephen Rodrick's story 100%. Mr. Sheffield's comments are on tape."

Sheffield, who went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the first inning last night, admitted that he was asked about leadership in the interview but claims he did not name a player or imply anything about Jeter or Rodriguez. He said he spoke with Jeter and A-Rod early yesterday to explain the situation and make sure there was no animosity.

Jeter said he didn't even know about the article until Sheffield called him and gracefully tried to put the issue aside.

"He didn't have to explain to me," Jeter said. "Sheff's been a great teammate and a good friend of mine for a while."

A-Rod expressed a similar sentiment, saying, "Every family has issues. When you think about what happens in other clubhouses, this is all very trivial."

When asked directly if he was referring to A-Rod and Jeter in the magazine article, Sheffield scoffed.

"Of all the two people you'd pick, you pick the two guys I probably trust (most) out of all of baseball," Sheffield said. "Not just on this team, in all of baseball. Dear, close friends with personal relationships. . . . I was asked about leadership everywhere I've been. It had nothing to do with this team. Everybody is a leader. There's more than one leader. Jeter's our captain; he's not the leader, he's the captain. That's a different ballgame. Every team I've been on, everybody leads in different ways. It's not a shot at one particular person."

During the course of a group interview yesterday, Sheffield said he has considered cutting off media access but hasn't done so because that wouldn't be fair to the reporters who "do the job right." As he has in the past, he blamed the media for his prickly reputation though he didn't invoke race as a reason - something he did do in the New York article.

"It happens because you're white and I'm black," Sheffield is quoted as saying. "You write how you understand it, how you would articulate it, not how I, as a black man, would articulate it."

After a season and a half filled with similar incidents that stemmed from explosive comments, Sheffield's act has worn thin with many Yankee insiders. He has criticized the Yanks over how much information is released publicly regarding his injuries, over the payment of deferred interest in his contract and after it was reported that the Yanks had entertained offers for Sheffield in a trade. In New York, he is quoted as saying the Bombers aren't a family-friendly organization because players' wives aren't allowed on the team plane, but Sheffield said that his "assistants" - who he claims were at the interview at his home - told him many of his quotes are inaccurate.

"The bottom line is, I know what I said," Sheffield said yesterday. "I had an assistant there taking notes to make sure that whatever (the writer) tried to do, it ain't going to work. I'm not going down like that. I've never talked about another player to bring myself up. I don't have to."

Whad you expect playing in New York. The Media is ruthless. They're the second worst when it comes to rumors, gossip, and playa hatin'. I'll let you guess which city is the worst.

Playa hatin' with documented, recorded comments. And to say that he wasn't talking about Jeter and ARod has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Who was he talking about? Womack and Leiter? He threw his buddies under the bus in an instance of selfishness and self-promotion, so now he has to lie his way out of it. That's a helluva leader.

So, does that mean we'll hear the interview on a CD that's polybagged with the upcoming issue that the article is in? Or is it just "documented" because the reporter said so?

Greg Maddux stole a base today, and had more hits (1) than the entire 1-6 of the Cubs potent offense.

Didn't say that. However, it's nice that the reporter has it on tape. That means we'll be able to clear all this mess up.

Right?

I was at the mall during the game and was listening on my iRiver as I often do, and I instinctively broke out a fist-pump when the grand slam went out. Got a few strange looks.

Right?
Maybe so. He'd better soon, because Shef's credibility is so rock-solid, he's going to make a fool out of that writer.
