The Red Vs White Sox should be a good series, and a possible prelude to their meeting in Oct for the pennant.

I'm happy either way with this one, although the Red Sox need the wins a bit more.

Man, the national league is soft. Another American WS is in the works.

did he actually say he was having the surgery?
I heard he said he was done.. and he would need surgery.. and he would make an announcement after the season

but i thought it meant he was having surgery after the season, and would make his announcement then

Hernandez may have been sipping on grandpa's cough syrup last night. He said he's done and needs knee surgery. When asked if that was a doctor's diagnosis, Hernandez replied that he is the doctor. His next comment was something to the effect of "I don't need it, but I'm going to have it."

Yeah, I think Livan has finally gone off the deep end.

Would have liked the Cubs to have swept the Reds, but they need to take at least 3 of 4 to start the trip off right before to St. Louis this weekend. The central title is done, but given the Cubs still have 14 games left with the Cards, they will need to do very well against them to get the wild card (bare minimum would be 7-7, but hopefully something like 9-5).

Too bad it's not going to cool off for the weekend - I have tickets for Saturday/Sunday's games.

The heat index is already up to 111.

I have been anxious to see how the White Sox pitchers do against the Red Sox and Yanks. Should be good.

The Orioles' reluctance to take Mike Lowell and any portion of his salary has prompted the Marlins to begin looking elsewhere. Team officials spent the better part of Wednesday working on a three-way deal involving the Red Sox and Twins."
-- Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

League sources confirmed yesterday that the Sox have discussed a scenario in which they pair their efforts to obtain Twins lefthanded setup man J.C. Romero with their attempt to acquire Burnett. Under that scenario, the Sox would trade third baseman Bill Mueller and prospects to the Twins, who need a third baseman, for Romero and righthanded starter Joe Mays.
-- Boston Globe

Having reached an impasse with the Baltimore Orioles about A.J. Burnett, sources said the Marlins now are making calls to other teams about the pitcher and third baseman Mike Lowell. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have been mentioned as possible trade partners, but an industry source with close knowledge of discussions said the Orioles `are the only game in town right now.'
-- Miami Herald

The latest rumor floating around the industry yesterday was that Florida was interested in sending A.J. Burnett and Mike Lowell to the Yanks in exchange for Carl Pavano and Felix Rodriguez... Alfonso Soriano might be willing to move to center if he were dealt back to New York, but conversations between the Yanks and Rangers haven't been productive...
-- New York Daily News

The Minnesota Twins are reported to be willing to trade left-handed reliever J.C. Romero, and one of the Twins' top scouts, Larry Corrigan, has been following the Angels for the past seven games. Corrigan, a special assistant to General Manager Terry Ryan, said he is simply in his normal coverage pattern and not here because of the July 31 trade deadline.
-- Orange County Register

Ken Griffey Jr.'s name is hot on the trade rumor mill. But if the Reds are serious about dealing him, they haven't taken the next step and asked Griffey where he's willing to go.
-- Cincinnati Enquirer

With trade rumors swirling about his enticing first basemen, Phillies general manager Ed Wade takes solace in their focus on their jobs. Neither rookie Ryan Howard nor pricey veteran Jim Thome appears to have been affected by reports that both are on the block.
-- Philadelphia Daily News

It is considered pure coincidence that Mike Piazza dropped in the batting order on the same day Ramon Hernandez showed up at Shea Stadium. But the timing is at least a little curious, considering Piazza is probably playing his final half-season as the Mets' catcher and Hernandez is regarded among the most qualified replacements expected to hit the free-agent market this off-season.
-- New York Times

Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd reiterated Wednesday that he's not shopping Byrnes. He said he still believes he can fit him in next year's payroll, and likes the ballplayer's energy. The Yankees and Houston Astros are among the teams interested.
-- Denver Post

Troy Glaus has a message for all the armchair general managers out there who think the Diamondbacks need to make drastic moves before Major League Baseball's trading deadline: Chill out.
-- Arizona Republic

Bowden continues to try to talk former Cincinnati shortstop Barry Larkin into returning to play for the Nationals. To this point, he has been unsuccessful.
-- Washington Post

The Angels, Diamondbacks, Devil Rays and Padres are believed to be among the teams interested in Alan Embree , who must be moved within the next eight days after being designated for assignment on Tuesday.
-- Boston Herald

Hopefully the Yanks woeful staff can at least keep them in games this series facing by far the worst offensive team they have faced on this trip.

One tidbit that didn't show up in Raven's snippets, probably because it involves a coach:

Bob Klapich had a long piece in the Bergen Record:

"According to a person close to the Braves' legendary coach, Leo Mazzone has been informally and indirectly contacted by members of the Yankees' hierarchy, asking if he'd be interested in succeeding Mel Stottlemyre. Mazzone has told the friend he would come to the Bronx "in a minute" for the right offer."

Cubs manage to get out of a bases-loaded, 0 outs jam and maintain a small 1 run lead over the Reds going into the 8th.

After losing 3 out of 4 to Tampa Bay, the Blue Jays are able to sweep the M's with a 6-3 win today.

Still it's going to be very difficult to move up in the AL East or the wild card standings.
