Well now it's official! Twins concede AL Central.

No need for the Trib to print the White Sox 'magic number' anymore (jeez, what a stupid fucking waste of space) which I think is at 59 today . . .

In the three-way deal, the Marlins would acquire pitcher Mark Redman from Pittsburgh, along with Orioles pitchers Hayden Penn and Jorge Julio and outfielder Larry Bigbie. In return, the Marlins would send Burnett to Baltimore and Mike Lowell to Pittsburgh.
-- Palm Beach Post

Despite indications from several media outlets that the Orioles' pursuit of Florida pitcher A.J. Burnett is a done deal, one source familiar with the negotiations said yesterday that the team won't obtain Burnett unless the Marlins remove struggling third baseman Mike Lowell from the pending trade. Instead, the Orioles are now closing in on a three-way trade with the Pirates and Marlins that could yield them Burnett and Pittsburgh outfielder-first baseman Daryle Ward.
-- Baltimore Sun

Sox owner John W. Henry told Bloomberg news service yesterday that 'there is a very good probability that we will increase payroll before the trading deadline.' ...Henry is said to be very fond of Marlins righthander A.J. Burnett from his days as Florida's owner.
-- Boston Globe

J.P. Ricciardi has money to burn and wants pitcher A.J. Burnett badly, but not enough to take on another faulty contract...He was referring to reports that the Florida Marlins wanted teams interested in acquiring Burnett to also take on the $21.25-million (all figures U.S.) albatross that is third baseman Mike Lowell's contract.
-- Globe and Mail

Orioles 1B Rafael Palmeiro found an interesting message in his e-mail inbox on Monday. Hank Aaron sent Palmeiro a note to congratulate him for his 3,000th hit, which put the first baseman in an elite class. He joined Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players in baseball history with 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. "Welcome to the club," the e-mail read.
-- Washington Post

Rumors have resurfaced that the Cubs are in hot pursuit of Florida Marlins leadoff man Juan Pierre. But that comes as a surprise to Cubs officials, who insist they haven't been talking to the Marlins about the speedy center fielder... Reds general manager Dan O'Brien has said demoted outfielder Austin Kearns is going nowhere.
-- Chicago Sun-Times

The Nationals continue to ask the Devil Rays about a deal that might include Tampa closer Danys Baez, but a source said the Nationals would also like to acquire infielder Julio Lugo, who is hitting .293 as the everyday shortstop.
-- Washington Post

Before last night's game against the Colorado Rockies at RFK Stadium, [Jim] Bowden said he had called Nationals special assistant Barry Larkin to try and persuade the 12-time All-Star to come out of retirement and play for the rest of the season.
-- Washington Times

Rangers owner Tom Hicks reiterated Monday that financial considerations will not prevent general manager John Hart from making trades that could improve the Rangers now and in future years... Mike Sweeney, Jim Thome, Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza and Brewer High School graduate Aubrey Huff are all big-name hitters who could be on the block.
-- Fort Worth Star-Telegram

The Red Sox have called the Twins looking for pitching. Boston is believed to be interested in lefthander J.C. Romero, who could help stabilize a bullpen that had a 5.51 ERA entering Monday -- the second-highest in the American League. The Twins, of course, are looking for hitting, and the Red Sox might be willing to deal veteran third baseman Bill Mueller.
-- Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Sox are believed to have shown interest in acquiring veteran second baseman Tony Graffanino from the Kansas City Royals... The Sox also might have some interest in funky reliever Shingo Takatsu, who was designated for assignment yesterday by the Chicago White Sox.
-- Boston Herald

The White Sox claim the potential of rookie reliever Bobby Jenks helped them decide to designate Shingo Takatsu for assignment, rather than the former closer's struggles... Arizona showed interest as recently as Saturday, but a Diamondbacks source Monday ruled out a deal involving Takatsu.
-- Chicago Tribune

Manager Jack McKeon appeared unfazed Monday by published and broadcast reports that his job is in jeopardy... Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi termed references to him being a possible McKeon replacement as 'just pure speculation.'
-- Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

The Sun-Sentinel reports the Marlins are considering firing Jack McKeon and have Rays manager Lou Piniella on their list of replacements, though their first choice would be Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi.
-- St. Petersburg Times

The Marlins could hire Jim Leyland as manager. At least that's the name you keep hearing around baseball when the subject of a potential Marlins opening comes up. "My gut tells me the next manager of the Marlins will be Jim Leyland," a National League source said recently.
-- Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

The San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Devil Rays remain interested in Shawn Chacon. The Rockies are motivated to move him because of their rotation depth -- Zach Day and Jose Acevedo are ready to step in, and Aaron Cook will arrive next month -- and their desire to fill other voids.
-- Denver Post

The Cubs would love to pry outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds demoted Kearns to the minor leagues earlier this year, but they'd likely ask for pitching prospect Rich Hill in return.
-- The Daily Herald

The Angels could turn their attention toward bullpen help, particularly a left-hander. Among the relievers they are believed to be interested in are Colorado's Brian Fuentes, Pittsburgh's John Grabow and Seattle's Ron Villone.
-- Los Angeles Times

After a day of poking and prodding, MRIs and arthrograms, Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen, still trying to shake the discomfort in his left shoulder, didn't play Monday night. He is expected to be in the lineup tonight against Milwaukee, but Dr. George Paletta, head of the Cardinals' medical staff, said Rolen's availability would be limited for the next three to six weeks.
-- St Louis Post-Dispatch

The Red Sox considered calling up Dustin Pedroia from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace injured Mark Bellhorn at second base, but they opted against the move because of lingering soreness in the former Arizona State star's right wrist.

If you believe Gammons (and that's always the rub), Pittsburgh is not involved in the potential deal anymore, Angelos wants to pay no more than 50% of Lowell's remaining salary (or not include him at all), and are offering Julio, Penn, and Kline for Perisho and Burnett. Plus Burnett hasn't yet agreed to an extension which may or may not affect the deal.

Alan Embree has reportedly been DFA'd by Boston.

This lends creedence to the mentioned Mueller for Romero deal.

Doesnt sound too bad at all.

Saw this on his ESPN profile:

Graffanino has fashioned a 10-year major-league career out of his ability to move around the infield and outfield. Now with his fourth organization, he played only second base with the Royals last season. But he has moved around more this year, contributing at all four infield spots.

Just reading around the internet today, the only info I can find on the Mueller-Romano deal is that purely speculative blurb out of MN; the writer, at least to me, makes it sound like "hey, RS need help in the pen, and it'd be kinda cool to have The Pro on our team". Every other mention of the deal is in reference to that.

Not to say Romero isn't coming this way; his name has made the rounds for almost two weeks now. Just trying to say that Mueller as the price doesn';t appear to have come from any informed source. But, yeah, I definitely see what you're saying; we're all waiting for more shoes to drop.

And it sure ain't the same thing, but Ron Villone has been mentioned for a while as well; supposeldy, he'd cut off his non-pitching hand to join the Red Sox.

Speaking of Millar, there are any number of posts on the Marlins board with guys absolutely sploonging over getting Millar back down to FL as a filler in a Burnett deal.......

Yeah, sound OK, but I thought the organization had a higher opinion of Ambres than this. Maybe I've heard his name so much, I just assumed he was more of a player than he really is.....

EDIT: Ambres, from soxprospects.com:

Speedy outfielder with excellent plate discipline. Said to be a great, hard-working teammate. Great range in the outfield with a weak arm. Ambres has been slowed down by leg injuries in the past.
