Take away game 2 and they were outscored 20-13...just as awful, especially considering the number of chances they had to tie/take the lead in all three of their losses.

"Who would take his (Alex Cora's) place at second [if the game went extra innings]? If you have a guy I'll listen ... We've talked to Billy. We're not going to put Bill Mueller at second anymore."

I dont care if David Ortiz plays 2nd in extra innings. Worry about that when you get there.

Bingo. Makeshift defensive alignments in extra innings is just something you have to work with. If you have the bases loaded with no outs in a 5-3 game against Maiano Rivera, you do what it takes to win or to get to the 10th. That's not hitting Alex Cora.

Losing 3 out 4 to Tampa Bay is inexcusable. J.P. wanted to know if this team was playoff ready, I think he got his answer this weekend.

Ripped, combined, collated, and paraphrased from a few boards:

With all that was said yesterday about Burnett-to-the-BoSox being dead in the water, it's now being reported on several Boston outlets (Weei, and McAdams on the Pro. sports station) that the deal is indeed alive. Rumored to be Arroyo, Moss, Shoppard, and another minor leaguer (not an Untouchable, possibly Alverez) for Burnett and Lowell. Given that Boston upped the ante, Sox are now requiring the window to extend Burnett....

The Baltimore Sun was reporting today that the O's are close to a deal, but I don't buy it. MLB will do everything to ensure that he ends up in 'the right place.'

WEEI is now just quoting multiple sources and giving both the Boston and Baltimore versions of the trade. One of the NYC rags this AM also has Boston as the frontrunner from 'unnamed sources'.

Given that Boston would send a SP and three prospects (one a SP), anyone figure if FL might help eat part of Lowell's contract......?

I would love to see this trade happen. Burnett is an upgrade, and Lowell at third would be a great improvement, even with the slump he has going this season..

According to the source, a trade between the Orioles and Florida Marlins involving Marlins starter A.J. Burnett and Orioles reliever Jorge Julio is almost complete. The source expected an announcement to come today, saying the two sides have made significant progress, but a team official said it is doubtful it would happen that soon.
-- Baltimore Sun

The Marlins are ready to move Burnett, who is eligible for free agency after the season. But they're looking for a starting pitcher, a reliever and a young lefthanded-hitting outfielder. The Sox could part with Bronson Arroyo and prospect Brandon Moss, but are themselves looking for bullpen help and don't have anything to offer."
-- Providence Journal

According to a National League official, the Marlins are giving serious consideration to firing the popular Jack McKeon in an effort to shake up one of baseball's biggest disappointments... The top candidate to replace McKeon, 74, would be Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi, the source said.
-- Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Joe Girardi, the bench coach, could be a candidate to manage the Florida Marlins if they decide to fire Jack McKeon. But as of last night, the Marlins had not sought permission to interview Girardi.
-- Newark Star-Ledger

Just in case the Phillies hold a fire sale before the July 31 trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have been scouting closer Billy Wagner for a week and the Texas Rangers began monitoring pitcher Vicente Padilla on Sunday... The feeling also is Jim Thome would drop his no-trade clause only for a few teams, perhaps the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians.
-- PhillyBurbs.com

With Bernie Williams in the twilight of his career, the Yankees are poised to be one of Damon's primary suitors. Johnny Damon said if he did enter free agency, he would not rule out the Bronx as a possible destination.
-- New York Times

Reliever Shingo Takatsu could be traded as soon as Monday to Arizona if the Diamondbacks can't strike a deal with Pittsburgh. If Takatsu stays, the Sox may elect to option rookie pitcher Bobby Jenks to Triple-A Charlotte to make room for Hernandez.
-- Chicago Tribune

According to the Toronto Sun, the Rangers have pushed the Blue Jays hard to trade center fielder Vernon Wells, an Arlington native. This was Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi's response: "We're not trading him.
-- Dallas Morning News

Instead of the Tigers' making the first move about a contract, however, Placido Polanco has suggested to his agent that he should. "I told him to talk with them, see if they're willing to do something, but don't tell me what. He knows what's fair.
-- Detroit News

The Marlins are in the same spot as the Cubs, only without fans or revenue. And they supposedly are considering selling Juan Pierre, who would be a dream leadoff hitter for the Cubs.
-- Chicago Sun Times

The Red Sox are actively seeking both a starter and a reliever. They like Brewers setup man Mike Wise, but Milwaukee reportedly is willing only to trade Ricky Bottalico. Miguel Batista of the Blue Jays is available, but Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi is believed to have asked for top prospect Hanley Ramirez in return, the same player Tampa Bay GM Chuck LaMar wants for closer Danys Baez. Jason Schmidt of the Giants does not appear to be on the Sox' radar; Seattle's Eddie Guardado may be a possibility, but again price will be a factor.
-- The Boston Globe

It's not surprising the Rockies immediately had inquiries about outfielder Eric Byrnes after he was acquired from Oakland. Byrnes and Dustan Mohr are very similar, and the Rockies don't figure to keep both of them, especially if Ryan Spilborghs shows promise in his cameo appearance.
-- Rocky Mountain News

With trade talks swirling, the Baltimore Orioles' most significant addition to their rotation may come Monday, when Erik Bedard makes his long-awaited return from the disabled list.
-- Washington Post

Frank Robinson said Zach Day, who went 19-21 in parts of four seasons with the Nationals-Expos, still has the ability to succeed, and he believes Colorado could be a good fit. But because he was toggling between the rotation and the bullpen for the Nationals, for whom he posted a 6.75 ERA this year, he couldn't settle in.
-- Washington Post

A Yankees person said they actually did call about Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez several weeks ago, well before their pitching situation grew this desperate. However, they were told the White Sox couldn't trade Hernandez unless they could first acquire a hard-throwing starter such as A.J. Burnett or Jason Schmidt.

Reggie's been put on the DL for 4-6 weeks. The old man was having a pretty good season. And they threw the youngest Molina on the DL, too.

Magglio returns to Comiskey for the first time this year. I'm curious to see how the Sox fans welcome him back tonight. If I were at the park tonight I'd give him a warm welcome.

Man the last thing the Rangers need is another bat. Call up somebody from triple to cover center, but don't trade for Wells. One more quality starter or a couple quality middle relievers and we might stand a chance of making the playoffs.

No doubt, I would too. Even being quiet when it came to the PR game he was still hugely popular: the consummate teammate and ballplayer.

Besides, the pale hose are 12 games ahead in their division and 32 games over .500, more reasons to quell any resentment.

I know that Wells is having an average season but it will be stupid of Ricciardi to get rid of one of the few guys in the Jays team that can actually hit.
