Michelle Wie playing with the guys this weekend

...at the John Deere Classic. She shot a 1-under today and has a realistic shot of making the cut.

Wie in position to make cut after strong start
by NANCY ARMOUR, Associated Press

SILVIS, Illinois -- Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie shot a 1-under 70 at the John Deere Classic on Thursday, putting her on target to become the first woman in 59 years to make a cut on the PGA Tour.

The top 70 players and ties make the cut, and there were 91 players at 1-under or better when Wie finished her first round.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias is the last woman to make a cut on the tour, at the 1945 Tucson Open. No woman played on the tour until 2003, when Annika Sorenstam teed it up at the Colonial. Sorenstam missed the cut.

Since then, Suzy Whaley and Wie have played tour events. Wie missed the cut at the 2004 Sony Open by one stroke. She played the same event this

Wie is playing the Deere Classic on a sponsor's exemption, and she's clearly the center of the attention. A gallery of a couple hundred people was there at the first hole, and it grew to about 2,000 when she made the turn.

"This is the biggest crowd I've seen" on a Thursday, said spectator Bill Corrick of Iowa, who's been at the tournament the last five years. "It's a combination of the good weather -- usually we get some hot, muggy days -- and there's been a lot of hype about Michelle, too."

With good reason. Wie got off to a quick start, rolling in a 20-footer for birdie on the par-5 No. 2. But she ran into some trouble after that, falling to 2-over with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6.

On No. 5, she overshot the green with her second shot, and the ball smacked into the netting underneath the grandstands. It landed 3 inches from the netting, and a rules official granted her relief because she had no shot.

She had a 12-footer for par, but this one missed by inches, too.

On No. 6, she clipped a tree with her second shot and dropped short of the green. Her chip shot only got past the edge of the green, leaving her a long putt for par. She had a chance, but the ball rolled alongside the edge of the cup and refused to drop.

She picked up a stroke on the par-3 No. 7 putting her tee shot within about 6 feet, but gave it right back on No. 8.

Wie got on a roll on the back nine, and not even her group being warned for slow play seemed to fluster her.

She made a 12-footer on the par-4 No. 11 to get back to even par, and stayed there until the par-5 17th hole, when she made one of the shots of the day.

With about 260 yards to the green on her second shot, Wie hit the back edge and the ball rolled up, getting within about 8 feet of the pin. There were cheers and whistles, and her mom, Bo, grinned when she saw where the ball ended up.

Her eagle putt broke too far right, leaving her about 3 feet away from the hole. She made that easily for birdie, getting back to 1-under.

"People asked me, `Oh, are you going out to watch that young girl?' I said, `Nah, she'll get torn up by the professionals,'" Corrick said. "(I've) changed my whole point of view about her. ... I think she's the next Tiger Woods."

Meanwhile, it looks like the fellas on PTI made the right call yesterday on who would shoot lower: Wie or David Duval. Duval shot a 5-over.

I'd love it if she won the US Amateur Public Links championship and got an exemption to the Masters. That would make Martha Burke's head explode.

If she wins this event, she gets an exemption for the Open at St. Andrews.

Shouldn't we change the thread title to "playing w/ the scrubs this weekend"?

I don't care if she's 15, she's hot. Mostly because she looks nothing like an average 15 year old at all.

That's not going to happen. She hasn't even won an LPGA event yet.

Local John Thompson radio show was going all ga-ga over this. I don't understand why. They acted like this was going to usher in some new era with women in sports...but I just don't see that. When I start seeing women playing left tackle in the NFL, Center in the NBA, or pitching for the Yankees, then I'll be a believer. I'll also kill myself.

I do think it would be a pretty big deal if she made the cut. Not just because she is a woman, but also because she is only 15 for crying out loud. I think Michelle Wie has the potential to be the biggest female sportsperson ever.

Exactly.

A 15 year-old making the cut at a PGA event would be incredible.

A woman making the cut would be incredible.

And this is a 15 year old girl, which would be a huge deal if she can make the cut.

She's birdied 2 of her first 4 holes to put her at -3 today. Leader is at -13. Projected cut is -3 right now.

She's out at (-3) 33. Currently sitting at -4 with her 2nd nine to go. 4 birdies and 1 bogey. Even if she shoots +1 on the next 9 holes, she's in.

Well, men can rest easy now - she won't make the cut.

edit: I thought she only had 1 hole left to go -2, but she has 2, so she still has outside shot.

Michelle is playing in the Men's Amateur Public Links this week. She qualified for the match play portion earlier in the week and won her opening match yesterday. She is 5-up in her 2nd round match today. A win here would put her in the round of 16 (3rd round). I believe the 3rd round takes place this afternoon.

The winner of the this event traditionally gets an invite to the Masters.
