No - he has been a stubborn ass lately. Supposedly, he isn't listening to Duncan - he is trying to spot the ball too much instead of just throwing the damn thing. He's trying to do too much. I wouldn't touch him until he can show he can win a couple in a row and go six or seven innings w/out getting schellacked.

Thanks, I'll stay away from him until I see some improvement.

White Sox general manager Ken Williams indicated Wednesday the club wants to re-sign designated hitter Frank Thomas to a new contract. And Thomas said he is ready to accommodate the team.
-- Chicago Tribune

Are the Sox still trying to acquire a prominent reliever? If Seattle lefthander Eddie Guardado is a possibility, he has a limited no-trade clause and would have to sign off on any deal. Boston has also looked at Atlanta's Danny Kolb (1-5, 5.63 ERA).
-- Boston Globe

With Keith Foulke scheduled for surgery today on his left knee and Curt Schilling poised to replace him in the bullpen, the Boston Red Sox are improvising as fast as they can to find a way to stay atop the American League East ... Among closers who might be available to Theo Epstein in a trade are Danys Baez of Tampa Bay and Eddie Guardado of Seattle.
-- New York Times

Strong play over that stretch would keep Omar Minaya optimistic and leave the Mets in position to seek a trade for proven performers, namely a power hitter and a relief pitcher ... A midsummer skid could leave the Mets shopping their veterans instead of searching for other teams' seasoned players. Contenders may show interest in a left-handed starting pitcher like Tom Glavine, who pitched Wednesday night.
-- New York Times

The Marlins continue to search for relief help, and Kansas City left-hander Jeremy Affeldt is a possibility.
-- Palm Beach Post

If the Angels are to make a deal by the July 31 trading deadline, it will likely involve some of the prospects that caused Baseball America to rank the Angels as the best farm system in baseball.
-- Riverside Press Enterprise

Jim Leyland wants one more crack at managing, but on his terms. He doesn't want to stray too far from his suburban Pittsburgh home, which narrows his options. Leyland isn't saying, but he'd probably only return to Pittsburgh or go to Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York, Washington or Boston. His best bet could be Cincinnati, which hired Jerry Narron as interim manager after firing Dave Miley last month.
-- Phillyburbs.com

People close to Bret Boone have been told by the Seattle Mariners second baseman that the Twins would be his first choice if he is traded or becomes a free agent, as expected.
-- St. Paul Pioneer Press

Pedro Martinez may be an All-Star in name only this season. Mets general manager Omar Minaya said last night that Martinez is leaning toward not attending the game in Detroit on Tuesday.
-- Westchester Journal News

When Johnny Damon was told after the game that Terry Francona said Curt Schilling, along with Mike Timlin, would share the closer's role, Damon didn't back down. ''You've got a lot of upset people in here," said Damon about the feelings of teammates on the decision to insert Schilling and bypass what other team members feel are more deserving candidates.
-- The Boston Globe

The Marlins continue to search for relief help, and Kansas City left-hander Jeremy Affeldt is a possibility. Affeldt, 26, has been on the disabled list since June 19 with a groin injury. He was the Royals' closer for part of last season and early this season.
-- Palm Beach Post

The Red Sox yesterday took the bold stroke of making Curt Schilling their closer for the forseeable future, with incumbent Keith Foulke headed for surgery today and expected to be sidelined for a period of four to six weeks.
-- Providence Journal

General manager Tim Purpura said the Astros have had some "discussions" with Koby Clemens and his parents, Roger and Debbie Clemens. Koby, who starred at Memorial High School as a pitcher and third baseman, has signed a letter of intent to play at his father's alma mater, College World Series champion Texas. Purpura said the Astros are still waiting for Koby Clemens to decide if he wants to go to college or begin his pro career. If Koby decides to turn pro, Purpura would like to have him playing in the minors by the end of the month.
-- Houston Chronicle

After considerable thought and careful analysis, Rays manager Lou Piniella decided not to follow through on his plan to open games with relievers and then bring in his starters. But Piniella thinks it would be a great concept for teams to use in the minors to give their young starters, who are limited by pitch counts, the opportunity to learn how to pitch in the late innings.
-- St. Petersburg Times

The injury-riddled Washington Nationals settled yesterday on rehabilitation assignments for two disabled list players, sending first baseman Nick Johnson and outfielder Ryan Church to Class AA Harrisburg for games over the weekend. Shortstop Cristian Guzman continues to improve from his strained hamstring.

If you see him have a couple of starts where he is keeping the ball low - by all means pick him up. That's when he is successful.

Something brewing over in the Fens. Jay Payton DFA, Ramon Vazquez traded to Cleveland for Alex Cora; do you just DFA Jay Payton unless you have something in the works.....?

EDIT: OF Adam Stern just called up from Pawtucket (mentioned on WEEI a minute ago), which IIRC had to be done in a week anyway, or the Braves could just Rule V reclaim him.

That's right! Is Prior vs. Ramirez or Williams vs. Smoltz going on right now? If it's Williams vs. Smoltz in the day game, Prior might get the opportunity to continue the Cub winning streak tonight instead of ending a losing streak. A guy can hope, can't he?

It appears that Payton is about to be traded. They need somone in the oufield tonight because Damon isnt playing, so I think they had to make room for Stern.
