Wimbledon Final: Federer - Roddick (spoiler within)

Federer wins 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 to become the 3rd man (Borg, Sampras) since 1936 to win 3 Wimbledon titles in a row. This is the 21st consecutive final he's won and he's 5-0 in Grand slam Finals. He hasn't lost a match on grass since 2002. He was close to perfection in this match with 49 winners, 12 unforced errors. He's now 9-1 against Roddick who is 32-0 on grass since 2003 against everybody else. He didn't even come close to being challenged in this tournament. The guy's game is so effortless it's truely amazing. I've never seen such a talented tennis player as Roger Federer.

I have. Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. The only difference is they had to compete against each other and against other great players like Courier, Chang, etc. Federer is impressive, but he has absolutely no competition to face him like Pete and Andre did, except for maybe Roddick. The men's game is diluted right now. If Federer had to compete against the competition that Andre and Pete did, he wouldn't be near as dominant. If he had to face an Andre and Pete in their prime, he'd be winning very few Grand Slams. In fact, he did have to compete against them, and didn't fare nearly as well.

Still, it's an impressive run,

Roger Federer is more talented and his game is more complete than either Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. He can do it all, and has no weaknesses. The level of competion he faces is irrelevant to that point.

I've gotta go with Terrell here for the most part. I do think that Federer is superior to Agassi at any stage of Andre's career. But Sampras in his prime is better than Federer is right now. If Federer ever wins the French I'd put him ahead of Sampras. But as it is, considering they both have that weakness, I'd put Sampras slightly ahead.

I'm purely evaluating talent/skills. I can quickly point out strengths/weaknesses in Sampras's game or Agassi's game. Federer has no weaknesses. I'll repeat, there has never been a tennis player as talented as Roger Federer. Now whether that talent will translate into as brilliant a career as the above mentionned players remains to be seen.

Federer vs Sampras(in his prime) at Wimbledon would be a true dream match.

LOL How has his talent not turned into a brilliant career already? He's won Wimbledon the past three years

Oh geez... I said: "...as brilliant a career as", because other people's evaluation seemed to be based on performance rather than talent/skills. Federer is only 23. We can talk about his career achievements in 10 years, although you could very well argue he's already having a brilliant career. But then that wasn't my point.

I'll be curious to see if Federer wins any French Opens. One thing Agassi did that Sampras never did was win all four slams over his career, including the French. In fact, he played in three French Open finals, two earlier in his career. Also, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Nadal might be better than Federer on clay.

At this time, only Nadal is better than Federer on clay. Starting in Hamburg, Federer won 11 straight matches and 28 straight sets before coming to Roland Garros. There's no doubt he can play on clay. It'll be tough beating Nadal though but I think he can do it. But there's so many clay court specialists out there that one of them might knock Nadal out one year and do Federer a favor.

Not in his game it isn't. See above.

I'm a seriously casual tennis follower. I swear I don't remember Agassi winning Wimbledon. Isn't Wimbledon a Grand Slam? The biggest? School me.

He did indeed win it in 1992 and it was his first Grand Slam win.
