That Home Record for the Nats is friggin' awesome. They have to love the fact that they actually have home field advantage for the first time in a decade.

Mark Prior will be pitching a simulated game today and may be back in the Cubs' rotation on Sunday!

Improving Prior could face White Sox on Sunday

June 21, 2005

BY MIKE KILEY Staff Reporter

MILWAUKEE -- Mark Prior's simulated game today could be a warmup for his return to the Cubs. Manager Dusty Baker said Monday that if Prior throws well and feels fine, he might start Sunday against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

"A lot depends on how he feels after he comes out of [today],'' Baker said.

Asked if this could be Prior's final simulated game, Baker replied, "Well, that's getting a little forward, but you're on the right track.'' As for pitching Sunday against the Sox, Baker said, "That's not out of the realm of possibility.''

Prior got the Cubs' only victory against the Sox when the clubs faced off in a three-game series May 20-22 at Wrigley Field. He pitched a complete game in winning the series finale 4-3.

Five days later against Colorado, Prior's right elbow was struck by a line drive that came so fast, he never saw it. While some speculated he could miss as much as two months because of the fracture, Prior has progressed steadily in his rehabilitation. If he returns Sunday, he will have missed only a month.

Prior threw an estimated 50 to 60 pitches Friday at Yankee Stadium in his first simulated game since the injury and was impressive. Baker said Prior had some influence on the team's decision that he doesn't need to go on a rehab assignment to Class AAA Iowa.

"He wasn't crazy about a rehab last time,'' Baker said. "Pitching against minor-league guys, and they're hitting you around pretty good, messes with your psyche and confidence a little bit.''

Prior made one rehab start this year for Iowa on April 7 in Albuquerque, N.M., before joining the Cubs. He allowed seven runs on nine hits. He had two rehab starts last season for Class A Lansing (Mich.).

The Cubs likely will try to get 75 to 85 pitches out of Prior today before determining if he is prepared to face the Sox. Baker said Prior and pitching coach Larry Rothschild decided to conduct the simulated game today, rather than Wednesday, even though he will have had only three days' rest between simulated starts. Usually, pitchers try to stay on the normal four-day rest cycle.

"He and Larry mapped it out,'' Baker said. "He's feeling good.''

Prior's return would make for an interesting roster move. If Jerome Williams pitches well tonight against Milwaukee in his Cubs debut, the Cubs will want to keep him in the rotation. If he struggles, Williams could be sent back to Iowa to make room for Prior.

If Williams remains with the Cubs, a reliever apparently would have to go. General manager Jim Hendry said over the weekend in New York that rookie left-hander Rich Hill will get a solid chance to show over a period of time what he can do with the Cubs, so that raises a question of whether Hill would be returned to Iowa this quickly to make way for Prior.

The Cubs could go with a rotation of Prior, Williams, Carlos Zambrano, Greg Maddux and Sergio Mitre and return Glendon Rusch to the bullpen. Or Mitre could go to the bullpen with Rusch staying in the rotation until Kerry Wood's return, which could come as soon as next week.

For the past 2 years, Wood and Prior have led the majors in wins in simulated games.

Don't even get me started on their towel-throwing skills . . .

True that! They definitely strike fear in the simulated hearts of simulated hitters!

Unfortunately, I fear that Prior's towel-throwing skills may be diminished due to his fractured elbow.

Man, Frank Thomas has been on a homer tear since coming off the DL.

6 homers in 32 at bats.

Waiting patiently for the day that Seattle trades Bret Boone for a half-eaten bag of Big League Chew...

At least they benched him to let Lopez play.

And in other favorite team news, Giants trading Schmidt rumors dominate the front page of ESPN. Slow news day.

Why settle for Big League Chew when you know Georgie will probably give him a $60 million contract with a no trade clause.
