Official 2005 National Spelling Bee Thread - Part I

Prior year threads:
The Official 2004 National Spelling Bee Thread
The Official Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee Thread - Part I

It's that time of year again! A time when socially inept internet forum posters suddenly feel better about their own social lives.

It actually began yesterday, with today being the final rounds. Coverage has already begun on ESPN. Here is the schedule (though those of you with Season Passes on their TiVos from last year are probably already recording, though you may want to pad just in case):
ESPN Coverage for Thursday, June 2

10 a.m. to 12 noon, EDT
and
1 to 3:30 p.m. EDT

Here are some pics of the cool kids having fun at pre-Bee festivities:

Here are some highlights from yesterday (Wednesday), identifying some of the different types of spellers attending:

The Face-Coverer

The Microphone Fondler

The Personal-space Invader

The Nametag Speller

Still looking for The Writes-on-palm-of-hands Speller...

All those pics, and you don't include the kid with the moustache? Me thinks we have a Danny Almonte situation.

I've got a question. I was offered two asian private school kids for two homeschooled kids and a future draft pick in my Spelling Bee Fantasy League. Should I accept it?

OK, Wilbon: Over/Under on 2 kids passing out on stage?

Can't wait to watch this when I get home from work.

I did not see any kid with a mustache of the 51 remaining finalists, at least not like the one on PTI. Maybe that was stock footage?

To help you with the poll, at the start of today, of the 51 finalists, 28 were boys, and 23 were girls. It has also been 6 years since a girl has won.

At the end of the first round today, the gender count had changed to:
Spoiler:
24 boys, 12 girls. Girls did not have a good round once the cameras came on.

Wait a sec -- are the two airings this morning separate shows? I thought the second show was just a repeat.

Will it be re-aired?

I only set up to record the 10am airing and not the 1pm airing.

You're not gonna get the Finals, Scorcho.

Your only hope is that it becomes a shootout and becomes an Instant Classic and shown on Classic.

EDIT: Oh, I only went through like the next day. Didn't realize they were repeating it on the weekend...

Now, how will you stay away from TV and radio results to avoid spoiling who won???

How many hints do the judges give these people. Just get up there and spell. They are slower than MLB pitchers.

Definition
Etymology
Part of Speech
Use in a sentence
Alternate definitions

Off to the "comfort room." Ahh, gues a lot of people here aren't used to playing sports and losing.

Why are Canadians allowed in the national spelling bee?

Helpful insight from the announcer:

Announcer 1: "What would have helped him spell it better?"

Announcer 2: "Well, if he had seen the word before."

Home schooling is a bitch, but the fact that "Rain Girl" won the Spelling Bee and graduated college is quite a nice achievement.

NOOOO! Homeschooled kids can be good, but they are hit and miss. If you don't know for certain about their history you could end up with a kid that learned phonics and can't spell worth a danm!

Hope everyone padded their recordings. No eliminations in the last couple rounds, four kids left. Though most folks would have trouble spelling the names of the kids still there.

Spoiler:
That Samir kid is a cocky little bastard.
