MLB Saturday 5/28

I don't know how to do all the standings/schedule stuff but whatever. This is the thread for today's games, today's news, and discussion about yesterday's news.

Prior on the DL, Cubs trade Latroy Hawkins to the Giants for Jerome Williams and David Aardsma.

I didn't know a shitty set up was worth that much.

My first Tim McCarver sighting of the year: I turn on the tv and he's saying that Sveum made the correct call sending the runners yesterday. Not only that, but he says it in a way that implies that it would be absolutely absurd to think he should have held them. Asshole

That Giants move is a real head-scratcher. I'm assuming they're trying to make a run yet again for the playoffs, but their chances are pretty remote even with the 50 innings of whatever they get from Hawkins. Williams has been a solid starter in the majors and is only 23, and Aardsma is a pretty decent RP prospect. I wouldn't be shocked to see Hawkins attempting to close for San Fran in the near future considering nothing in Tyler Walker's history suggest he's a good RP.

"Attempting" is probably the key word there. Hawkins doesn't seem capable of being a closer.

Who are these announcers doing the Fox SD Vs SF game? These guys are boring! Does Fox ever broadcast thier games in HD?

I'll defend Hawkins a little. He's been fairly unlucky as a closer. Not saying he's great or anything, but I think he can end up being of Jose Mesa or Bob Wickman quality. Which isn't saying much, but it is probably a step up. Considering how crappy the rest of the pen in SF is, that's at least something.

I think these are the actual Giants announcers. It makes me wonder where Thom Brenneman is today. Did he do the Yanks/Sox game? If so, that's a big step up for he and Lyons. They are by far the best tandem on Fox but usually get relegated to the secondary game because of Joe Buck.

I think the Astros may have started the saddest first 5 I've ever seen. Orlando Palmeiro, Todd Self, Jose Vizcaino, Lance Berkman, and Mike Lamb. The only one of those that should ever be starting regularly is Berkman, and he's barely cracking .200 coming off an injury. Actually oustide of Ensberg and Berkman, this line-up is just sad. I can't believe they won't actually just play guys like Jason Lane (or Chris Burke in AAA). No matter how much they struggle, they cannot be worse than these guys.

Now you know how I felt last year. Injuries can decimate a team.

Still, you'd think the Astos might just go with something like this for their top 5:

2B Chris Burke (tore up AAA last year, and is doing the same so far this year)
1B/LF Craig Biggio - he pretty much sucks at fielding now, so play him whereever so he can hit
3B Morgan Ensberg - an on base machine
1B/LF Lance Berkman
RF/CF Jason Lane - I know he has sucked since April, but let the guy at least get an extended look before you right him off. His minor league numbers are good

As bad as the Astros have been, that has to be 100% better

the Yankees laid an egg today. Why did we bring back Stanton? He sucked on the Mets, why would he be any good on the Yankees?

You know after ranting about the Astros, it's good to know there's an even dumber team out there, the Reds. NL Central action, its fantastic!
