Fantasy Football: Early Draft Recommendations

Hey everyone - just wanted to get some other fan's recommendations on the upcoming NFL season.

The league I run at work does not favor RB's in scoring like most leagues do. However, the QB is definately most important point gainer. With that said, I really want to take advantage of some sleepers and such.

Here's some of my "early" thoughts:

QB:
Musts:
Peyton Manning - Definately number 1 in my league at work
Donovan McNabb - Consistant point gainer but he needs Westbrook AND Owens
Possibly:
Drew Brees - Can he repeat?
Brett Favre - Will Javon Walker hold out?
Jake Plummer - umm...
Steve McNair - Says he's worked out ALL SUMMER (?) and feels better than ever...
I'll Pass
Duante Culpepper - No Moss, No Smith, No Go
Michael Vick - Was one of the worse QB's in my league last year
Eli Manning - 1 year's not enough...
Sleeper:
Drew Bledsoe - A healthy Julius Jones, beefed up line, and a fresh look... = ???

RB:
Musts:
Shaun Aleaxnder - A top point gainer last year
LaDanian Tomlinson - With Brees at focus, he'll run
Corey Dillion - Sophmore season and he's comfortable
Possibly:
Edggerrin James - Will he hold out and will it affect him?
Tiki Barber - Rumor is that 3rd round draft will start more and Barbar will be a "Faulk" like rout-runner
I'll Pass:
Duce Staley - The Bus will get the call
Ricky Williams - A gamble, but can you count on him?
Eddie George - Wherever he'll be...
Sleeper:
Stephan Jackson - Starter next season and a HOT pick
Julius Jone - If healthy, he's top 5

WR:
Musts:
Randy Moss - Even with a horrible QB, he'll pull down scores
Marvin Harrison - Better OL in Indy and one less WR
Javon Walker - "If" he plays...
Possibly:
Terrell Owens - Huh? How'd he end up down here?
Roy Williams - If he's healthy, he's gold
Antonio Gates - A top TE but was the Chargers' season last year a fluke?
Torry Holt - Rams are getting old...
I'll Pass:
Isaac Bruce - Great WR for his time but the Rams' time is running low ... then again with Jackson...
Any WR on KC - None of them produced much last year
Muhsin Mohammad - As a Panther, he's a must, but as a Bear, he's a bust
Keyshawn Johnson - Yeah, remember him?
Sleeper:
Laveranues Coles - New city (kinda) + better QB = performance
Deion Branch - Maybe not a "sleeper" but quiet last season

What do you guys think? I am looking for some fresh outlook that will give me the edge to win this year; not 2nd like last year.

Thanks

Willis McGahee=probably one of the top 3 running backs this year.

and passing on Culpepper is a huge mistake.

I understand passing on any KC receivers, but I'm shocked you made no mention of QB Trent Green or RB Priest Holmes! With what should finally be an improved defense in KC, the offense should put up huge numbers!

Unless you are heavily penalized for INTs, Kerry Collins would be a great QB to have - throwing to Moss and Porter; great offense and best of, no defense for the Raiders - they will be playing from behind frequently.

Also, Stephen Jackson is hardly a sleeper.

RedDog:
I hear ya on the Jackson-sleeper comment. I "hope" he's a sleeper in the sense that no one picks him up right away.

I heavily thought on Trent Green and he was consistant last year. But it just seems like anyone on KC is a gamble, including Holmes. He's great! But will he stay healthy? And KC has a lot of depth in the RB position which means there might be less playing time for Holmes.

Kerry Collins could very easier be huge this year. Sleeper...

I am definately hesitate on Jordan, Portis, McGahee...they were all top picks last year but fell short compared to Dillon, James, Barbar, even Bettis.

I love all the feedback...gives me a lot to think about before the draft!

Obviously depending when you are passing on him. He should not go as high as he has in the past few drafts.

Depending on your scoring Kennison finished around 20th last year (and in 2003) and that was after he missed a few games early in the season. More importantly, he had 8 TD's when he was needed most (weeks 10-15), and was a top 10 receiver in the last 6 weeks. Given that he's between the 35th and 40th WR picked in most mocks so far this year, he continues to give value being drafted as a WR3 or WR4 and putting up WR2 numbers.

Culpepper "might" still be a pick but at num 3 of 4 or 4 of 4...not a 1 or 2 in my book. His receiver(s) made him a good QB... IMHO

The only gamble I see with Green or Holmes is potential injury, but this is a possibility with any player. Dick Vermeil is going for one last shot at the NFL title, and he will rely heavily on both Green and Holmes to make it happen. I expect them both to have a monster year.

Green has steadily put up better and better numbers each year in KC and should continue the trend with more offensive opportunities due to improvement on the defensive side of the ball. I'll be shocked if he doesn't throw for over 4000 yards and 30 TDs.

Holmes set a goal last year to surpass the single season rushing yardage record, but his knee injury in week 8 ended his season after rushing for almost 900 yards . He will likely have the same goal this year. He is feeling better going into this season coming off his knee injury than he felt going into the 2003 season coming off his hip injury. Holmes is still the main guy in KC and will not lose playing time to Larry Johnson. I expect KC to run a lot of packages with both Holmes and Johnson in the backfield. I only expect to see Johnson on the field without Holmes to give Holmes the ocassional breather or in the late stages of a blowout game. Johnson will be taking the reins in KC at some point, but it won't be this year.

It is just flat out silly to leave holmes off of any fantasy list, even playing half the season he had like 15 TDs. This season his durabilty should be better, as Larry Johnson should eat up some of his carries. But in the Red zone the Holmes will get the ball and he will score at will.

Also just a suggestion, but perhaps you might want to give TE's there own cateagory as they contiune to grow in their value and productivity.

Yeah - I don't see how Priest Holmes can't be a top-5 RB.

Um, Priest Holmes is moving up. Maybe a 1st RB if not a 2nd or 3rd. You guys are right. Just seems like the whole RB scene is heavily saturated this year. B/C of that, an RB will not be a top priority.

Just to let you know, the way I run my league is every team gets:
4 QBs
4 RBs
4 WRs
1 K
1 D/ST

The TE's are combined with the WR's. Every week, 3 of the 4 QB's, RB's, and WR's start. Also, it's a draft -base system where once a player is drafted, he is unavailable.

Past few year's I was takeing RB's but after the last few season's QBs have exploded with #s.

P.Manning
D.Mcnabb
D.Cullpepper

Them are my 3 top pick's,Vick is a good pick up if you play 2 QBs and if you get him in like the 5th round other wise I would never pick him,he is a FF nightmare.

BTW, fftoday has their Cheatsheet Compiler and Draft Buddy Available for $4.00 off until 8/1, if anyone's interested.

It didn't win me a championship last year, but the draft buddy alone was awesome to have running on a laptop at the draft.

Our league has Keepers, but only if you draft them between rounds 12-17. I picked up McGahee with the first pick of the 12th round. So, I'll be "keeping" him this year!

Hey Greg, Sorry for the late reply.

My league is at work and I wanted to keep it very simple. Last season was a huge success and the 8 owners loved it!

Scoring is a face-value system. TD's are 6, FG's are 3, extra points is 1, 2 point conversion is 2, etc. Anything at 50 yards or over is double. There are break through points as well.

ex:
You have Manning and he throws a 26 yard TD - 6 points.
He throws a 51 yard TD - 12 points.

If you happen to have Harrison and Manning and Manning throws a 51 yard TD pass to Harrison, you get 24 points ( 12 and 12 ).

Defenses get 2 points for sacks and 6 for a shut out.

There are also break through points:
RB's at 100 yards: 4 points
WR's at 100 yards: 4 points
QB's at 300 yards: 4 points

Anyone know of a site that offers free Consensus Rankings (compiled from multiple sources/'experts')? FFtoday had a nice one last year and Footballguys used to have one.

If you could keep two of the following running backs who would it be:

E. James, J. Lewis, K. Jones, J. Jones, T. Bell, S. Jackson

Keep it mind, that one can potentially keep a guy for years in the future, making the young guys more attractive

I'd go Kevin Jones and Jamal Lewis

I like jackson a lot, but lewis is still a stud and he's only 25. E. James is getting up there and may only have 2-3 good years left.

I think Jones is a top 5 back this year.

My take:

QBs: Daunte is a must, I'd put Warner in as a sleeper, along with Leftwich
RBs: Kevin jones is a must in my book, Tatum Bell sleeper

Definitely Steven Jackson. Good player now and outstanding player for the future.
As your second pick, it would be between Edgerrin James and Jamal Lewis (to win now). I'd pick James.
