Is this really big news? Girl pitches perfect game in boys little league

Local news tonight said this has made national attention
I'm thinking it isn't that news worthy

Perfect Pitcher in Genesee County

Oakfield is not unlike a lot of small town communities across the country. They move at their own pace. But now, when it comes to bragging, they can keep pace with the biggest.

“It’s quite overwhelming for a small community to get national attention like we have been getting,” said Jeff Sage, a little league baseball coach in the Genesee County town.

All of the attention is due to a strong-arm hurler is among them. At one little league game last Saturday, plenty of people took notice.

“The calls kept coming in. New York Times, New York post, we did photo shoots, interviews down here,” said Denise Bischoff, a little league mother.

All of the media members wanted to talk about Denise’s child. Her 11-year-old girl, Katie, pitched a perfect game in a boys league.

The amazing accomplishment almost never took place because Katie’s manage was ready to pull her out mid-way through the “Dodgers” game against the “Yankees.”

“I was going to go in the fifth inning,” said Jon Cassiano, a teammate of Katie’s. “I said, don’t put her out, she has a perfect game, see if she can do it. “

Katie stayed on the mound and one after one, batters struck out. Not a hit during the game.

“I went over to her and said, you’re pitching a perfect game here,” said Bischoff. “I said this is awesome, and she said “yeah” like it was no big deal.”

That’s just how Katie is. She let’s her play, speak for herself. Now, the networks and talk shows are calling. We asked her, how does that make you feel?

“Like I’m a star or something,” said Katie.

A baseball star no doubt, in an all boys league, and you can guarantee the boys are noticing the girl on the mound.

You can watch Lynne Dixon’s complete report on Katie and her accomplishment. Just click on the video link above.

Nope, not at all. But it's a feel good story that will appeal to a chunk of the masses for no real reason. I also find it humorous that the media calls it an "all boys league" when clearly that is NOT the case. If it were an all boys league, she wouldn't have been pitching!

Gotta feel sorry for those boys though. They're gonna be made fun of unmercifully in school.

Neither does the coach. What's he doing talking to a pitcher with a perfect game?

I don't think I could pitch a perfect game in the little leagues and I'm sure a lot of us here couldn't either. Maybe not worthy of national news, but it's still impressive.

The most astounding thing about her perfect game was that it was all strikeouts. 18 batters up, 18 down, all on strikes. No pop-ups, no fly-outs, no grounders, no line drives, just strikeouts. She never went more than 2 balls to any batter. No matter what level or gender, that is eye-popping.

I wonder what the closest that any pitcher in the majors has come to pitching this kind of a perfect game.

I found this, which is supposed to be accurate up to 2004...

# Most Consecutive Strikeouts—10, Tom Seaver, New York N.L. vs. San Diego, April 22, 1970.

Of course, he was facing MLB quality batters, so I'm not surprised to see that it's fewer. I've seen a highschool kid strikeout 15 straight in a lower round state tournament game. To me, that was much more impressive that what this girl did.

Despite her last start she wasn't a total fluke either. The game before her perfect game she struck out all but one batter.

She got into an arguement with her coach after the game.

Girls playing little league is not news. I don't care if she is Cy Young reincarnated.

It's a bit different and a much bigger deal than "just playing little league" but whatever.

I see the cavemen are out posting today

So when's she going to be recruited by that "professional" softball team we were all talking about a while back? The one that kills opponents by 50 runs?

I never played Little League, so I don't know: do they have some kind of parity between teams? Or is it possible she just got a gimpy team? Still, 18 Ks in a row is pretty impressive. Now, if she makes an MLB roster or something, that'll be news.

I wonder what kind of pressure that 18th guy was under by his coach...

Mayhap she just came across a team of young men with manners who would never hit a girl.

Well, she is 11- years old and 5'8. I didn't get over 5'8 until i was 16 or 17, and I'm a male. This girl is clearly out of her league. I dont think she should be praised. She is pretty much a freak playing in a little boys league.
