Marquette Golden Eagles? Warriors? ... No ...

Marquette's teams will now be known as the Gold.

Apparently, they thought they were offending the birds, which is almost as crazy as saying Warriors = Indians.

The newspaper is running a poll on the new name, and it's 92% against.

I think they should just change it to 'Bling' and be done with it.

Nothing really, except much of the alumni who donate lots of money liked Warriors better. Why they would change their name to Gold I don't know.

Thanks for the pic, MrX.

If I was an alumni who regularly donated to the school, I wouldn't give them another cent.

I know many of their alumni have felt like that even since the first name change.

Word was that the president of the school threatened to quit if the name was changed back to Warriors. Supposedly he's otherwise very highly thought of and they didn't want to lose him.

That's like Illinois's previous chancellor who worked with the anti-chief groups to try and dump the chief at UI. Eventually she was run out and is at Syracuse now.

She's such a bitter bitch about the whole thing she was said she would be wearing light blue the day of the Carolina/Illinois game for the NCAA Championship games.

some of these macot suggestions are hilarious

A can of paint. Then the mascot could run around waving his paint brush at the opponents in a threatening way.

Or maybe a graffitti artist. Spray paint may be more intimidating.

- Len, Greendale, WI

I think SpongeBob would make a great mascot, with a few $$ Gold Chains around his neck. What a great idea!!!...???

- "GOLD", MKE, WI

How about a picture of an alumni becoming a Badgers fan?

- Jim Carney, Austin, TX

The Trustees could dress up like miners and they would be known as the Gold Diggers

- Roz F, Milwaukee, WI

The Golden Calf (lol)

- Jesus Christ, Heaven, Wi

Maybe they're tying to fit in to become an Ivy League member. Those schools love color nicknames

Here's Dwayne Wade's reaction to the name change:

ESPN: Your alma mater, Marquette, changed their nickname to the Gold. What do you think of that?

Wade: To the what?

ESPN: To the Gold. The Marquette Gold. That's what they're going with now.

Wade: Oh I gotta call. I gotta call in on that one. I don't know how that sounds.

ESPN: We're breaking some news here?

Wade: I heard they was trying to change it back to Warriors.

ESPN: No I guess they're going with Gold. I'm surprised they didn't call you to check if it was okay with you.

Wade: The Gold? No I'm gonna make a phone call to to Marquette after we get off this. I don't know about that one.

ESPN: So that might change.

Wade: The Gold? The Marquette Gold?

ESPN: All right Dwyane, so far so good, and I know your word carries a lot of weight at Marquette as well as Miami, so congratulations. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

Wade: Thank you I will. The Gold?
