I love watching the Yankees lose.

Maybe one day, the idiots in sports will realize that money can't buy you everything.

Read an interesting stat today. 17 of the 21 games played by the Dbacks against inter-division teams have been decided by 2 runs or less. Certainly going to shape up to be an interesting race this year in the NL West.

Once again, Hudson has to face a no.1 caliber starter. I have Hudson, Burnett, Bedard and Halladay on the same fantasy team and I am starting them all!

when you're one of the best in the rotation.. you are going to get matched up among the best from the other team.. of course, hampton and smoltz have both been pitching at about the same level as hudson..

but some of the nice parts of having pitchers facing another top tier pitcher..
when you only get 1 run of support, you try to pitch better to keep the other team from scoring.. while if you have 7 runs in your pocket, you are liable to sacrifice some runs for outs...
not to mention.. when you have two dominant pitchers facing each other on the mound.. the umps become much more pitcher friendly.

Notes from watching the Rangers/A's game last night:
  • Sonic is one of the Rangers sponsors and they have a Sonic Slam Inning promotion where each night in the 6th inning a name is drawn from a hat and that person wins $100 if a Ranger hits a home run or $25,000 if a Ranger hits a grand slam. In the 6th last night the Rangers loaded the bases for Gary Matthews Jr who proceeded to hit a grand slam... which was pulled back over the wall by RF Bobby Kielty, thus stealing $25k from some poor lady. As the announcers said, I hope she wasn't watching.
  • During Monday nights game there was some "heckling" going on in the visitor bullpen. A highschool baseball team was there and one of them yelled out to Rangers pitching coach Orel Hershiser "Hey Hershiser! What should I do if I can't throw strikes very often?" Orel yelled back "Find a new sport!"
  • Oakland has their bullpens located in towards the back of their giant foul territories. Three times during the game last night the bullpen catcher missed a ball which apparently hit the wall and caromed deep into LF. Fortunately the A's have an amazing sprinter for a bat boy who'd run his ass off getting the ball and then sprint back into the bullpen full tilt to the cheers of the crowd. It was about all the had to cheer for last night.

Compare the difference between the standard 4X3 and the widescreen 16X9 pictures below. If you were watching this play on a standard window, you would not have seen that Bill Mueller applied the tag before Gary Sheffield reached base.

I'm having a heard time discerning how the early 90's relate to my comment that one day, the idiots in sports will realize that money can't buy you everything. You asked if anyone really hasn't learned that. I said yes, Steinbrenner. Now you're talking about the 90's... Steinbrenner typifies the "spend til you win" mindset and so far it has not been working too well; last year he brought in Sheffield and A-Rod; this year it was Randy Johnson and some other pitcher.

Clearly you and I aren't in synch, so let me know where I got lost...
