Question about Jimmy the Greek and Howard Cosell.

I was listening to a local radio show and they were talking about that college baseball coach who made insensitive remarks about African Americans. He mentioned both Cosell and Jimmy the Greek getting involved with making dumb remarks in their careers. Im a young guy (20) so Im unfamiliar as to what they said. Enlighten me please.

On a MNF telecast, Howard Cosell said 'look at that little monkey run,' in reference to Redskins WR Alvin Garrett.

Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder was dining at a DC restaurant one day when a local reporter asked him about blacks in pro sports. Snyder replied that whites were holding on to coaching jobs because, with blacks dominating the playing fields, management was the only role left for them. "The black is the better athlete," The Greek said. "And he practices to be the better athlete, and he's bred to be the better athlete because this goes way back to the slave period. The slave owner would breed this big black with this big black woman so he could have a big black kid. That's where it all started."

I am pretty sure that Jimmy was also on his 3rd or 4th martini at the time.

Cosell stated in a later interview that he also called his grandson a little monkey and didn't mean the comment to be derogatory. However, he also used to drink during MNF and that may have inhibited his brain-to-mouth regulation.

Given Cosell's support of Muhammed Ali I always found it hard to believe that comment was racially motivated.

Thanx guys, I think both statements may fall under the category of stupid/ignorant and even stereotypical in Greek's case but not racist for either. This college coach's statement;however, seems to be a different story.

Don't forget that it may be a case where those doing the talking did not "intend" them to be racist, but for many, folks those it would consider it racist. IMHO that is why you have to be very careful, everyone know they should say racist things, but it is not only what you think is racist, but what others think.

All three mentioned in this thread did a lot of good things. It is a shame that now they will be remember for statements that are considered racist. However, in all three I agree, they had to go. There are just some things you can't say.
