Why do so many baseball players chew tobacco?

It seems much higher than the general population %... any ideas? Is it just the culture in the dugout? Why is it that way?

There is something about it but I can't remember why. They also eat peanuts and seeds and NO it's not because it's boring being in the bench.

I'll get back to get you an answer.

Because they can't smoke while they play.

And steriods don't give them the same high.

Donald Trump won't hire any baseball players who chew tobacco to work for him

So you are trying to say is that they get high on tabacco?

If that was the reason then everyboby would be chewing tabacco everywhere you go.

Apparently you've never been to Lubbock.

I just figured it was a redneck thing, and historically baseball has been full of rednecks. It would be more dangerous to chew in a contact sport like football or hockey. The wrong hit and you'd probably end up swallowing the tobacco.

I heard somewhere that tons and tons of players in the 70s and 80s used amphetamines while playing and it was actually encouraged. As tobacco is a stimulant, the two go hand in hand. That's all I got.

I always just assumed it was to relax them a little at the plate.

I always thought it would be funny to see a football/baseball player smoking on the sidelines.

People often smoke to relax, but it's kind of hard to smoke when you are pitching, playing the field or running the bases - or at the plate like Mordred said.
