Mike Tyson to fight in June

Boxing: McBride awaits as Tyson heads back to the ring
By Thomas Hillier

13 April 2005

Mike Tyson has signed a contract to fight the Irishman Kevin McBride at Washington's MCI Center on 11 June.

His manager, Shelly Finkel, said that Tyson, who has been training in Arizona, renewed his licence with the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission this week. The former undisputed world champion has not fought since being knocked out in the fourth round by Danny Williams in Louisville last July.

Tyson, 38, filed for bankruptcy last year despite career earnings of more than 200m and Finkel said his client is more than 20m in debt. McBride had been lined up to face him last year before Williams agreed to take less money for the fight.

McBride 6ft 6in and 31 years old, was born in Clones, Ireland, but is now based in Massachusetts and has campaigned mostly in the United States. He has a 32-4-1 professional record, winning his last seven fights inside the distance. But he has been found out in previous forays towards the top level, being stopped by both Axel Schulz and DaVarryl Williamson.

McBride defeated Kevin Montiy, the Michigan-based boxer, by technical knockout on 18 March in his last fight.

Tyson became the world heavyweight champion in 1986 when he knocked out Trevor Berbick and has a 50-5 record with 44 knockouts. The stoppage by Williams was his first fight in 17 months and his first defeat in a non-title bout.

He has entered the ring just once a year since 2001, earning a technical knockout victory over Brian Nielsen in October of that year, getting knocked out by Lennox Lewis in June 2002, and knocking out Clifford Etienne in February 2003.

For once, I agree with Mike Tyson - this will be a trainwreck.

This crap is scheduled only because Showtime already shelled out the money to Tyson and they're just trying to recoup some of it. I doubt if I'll waste my time on it.

if they want to make money, they should scrap the other boxer and just have Mike Tyson try to spell words in the middle of the ring.

That would be a lot more entertaining.

I thought he was prepared to go 10 rounds.

Did anyone pay to see Tyson lose to a Tomato Can?

i thought he didnt have any choice but to keep fighting
he has so much debt built up.. that the larger ones got together and worked out some sort of payment plan that required 6 fights..
this should be #2 of 6.

After pouting on his stool following the 6th round, he said he didn't have the stomach to fight anymore. He said he was done.

Time will tell what this train-wreck will bring next.

I really hope nobody paid for this shit.

Ok, Tyson is a trainwreck.

But seriously, I didn't see the fight. Is this Kevin McBride guy white? They said he was from Ireland, and wasn't expected to be much of a match for Tyson.

Yes, he is an Irish toaster (if you hear him talk). And he is white. What does that matter?

Wow. I came home from watching Cinderella Man to hear Tyson quit against Mr. "Tomato Can"

What a shame. What a damn shame.

Goodbye Tyson. Sissy.

I'm from Boston... I watched the fight in a bar full of people cheering for McBride... And I wanted nothing more than to see Tyson tear this guy apart...

What a motherfucking disapointment... HE GAVE UP!!! The most viscious, animalistic, dangerous man in motherfucking boxing GAVE UP!!!!

From a viewers vatage point he wasn't even getting beat, the fight was even... Which seemed like a disgrace, but even non-the-less... All of a sudden he gets pushed over, not knocked down, pushed... Even the ref called it a push. And they come back from the end of the 6th and it's fucking OVER!!! IRON FUCKING MIKE GAVE UP!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!! In my fucking opinion this was ten-times more rediculous than a 30sec. beat down. If I paid to see this I would have been rip-shit. End of story. The son-of-a-bitch needs to retire now! Ali's fucking daughter put on a better fucking fight then the most frightening man in profesional sports... How sad is that shit??? I'm hammered, and I'm punching out Maverick...

You're Mom's Box!

I don't recall saying it mattered, I just asked if he was, because I don't recall Tyson even fighting many (not to mention losing to) white guys, but then I'm not really a boxing follower. No racial bias/slur/superiority implied.

And, what is an "Irish toaster", or a "tomato can" that some others have referred to him as? That sounds more like an ethnic bias/slur to me than anything I posted. What does his being an Irish toaster or a tomato can matter?

I find it funny that people can call him a "tomato can" and an "Irish toaster" without people questioning it, but when I simply ask if he is a white guy, my motives get questioned.

I don't know what "Irish toaster" means, although I can guess. "Tomato can" just refers to an inferior boxer.

It's scary how far Tyson has fallen, and it's not just age. It's almost like the wreck of a train.

Is this a joke? Or just an uninformed slam against boxing?

6/4/2005 - Hatton - Tszyu
5/7/2005 - Corrales - Castillo
3/19/2005 - Morales - Pacquiao

Those are just in the last few months, and I am forgetting some. Please don't confuse "Tyson" with "the rest of the boxing world".
