Orioles didn't have one Afro-American on there 2005 opening day roster

I thought this was highly unusual. How often has this happened? One of the last players cut from the team was Enrique Wilson.

Trelach24 04-05-05 08:35 PM

Wow, that is pretty odd.

Maybe we need Bobby Bonilla back or something.

I think this used to happen pretty regurally like before 1947.

twikoff 04-05-05 08:36 PM

speaking of odd..
this is the ad you get when you talk about the orioles :hscratch:

Timber 04-05-05 08:40 PM

I've never though about that but yes you are correct.

Trelach24 04-05-05 08:41 PM

Well, we do have Sosa now. Maybe Os fans don't want to shell out full price for a Sosa jersey.

wabio 04-05-05 08:46 PM

Sosa's not Afro-American. He can't speak a lick on english!!!!!

Had they not traded Jerry Hairson Jr., they would've had at least half of one on the roster.

gmal2003 04-06-05 09:56 AM

Their arent many if any Afro Americans in baseball. All that hair couldn't fit under those little helmets. Most of them with that much hair gets braids.I think Pokey Reese was an Afro-American for a while but he eventually got braids. Now as for the NBA, plenty of Afro Americans (Ben Wallace, Josh Childress, Rick Davis on occasion).

Red Dog 04-06-05 10:05 AM

How many American-born blacks are there in baseball today? How many under the age of 30?

Dabaomb 04-06-05 11:32 AM

Baseball has clearly become a Latino sport.

African Americans gravitate towards basketball & football

BrianYuen 04-06-05 11:49 AM

Baseball is actually a Latino and White person sport

Right, and you can be sure that MLB is very concerned about that. Not because of some lofty social principle, but for reasons of marketing and money.

Sadly, that's true. Plus they don't want to be called out by Jesse Jackson like the NFL has for having a lack of African American leadership. I think there's alot more minority coaches in MLB than in the NFL, though.

Josh H 04-06-05 01:17 PM

It's a disturbing trend, but I don't think it will affect attendence much.

They can just shift their marketing away from black urban areas some and more to suburban and rural areas as well as hispanic urban areas and keep the fanbase up.

Hell look at the success of NASCAR. MLB could sadly target that fanbase and probably get more support with less black players.

I think the concern is more with TV ratings than attendance.

Josh H 04-06-05 02:10 PM

That's true, but the US is only around 13% black, so it's not a huge chunk of the overall TV market.

Of course it's a bigger chunk of the urban markets, which is why they'd have to focus marketing away from black urban areas if this trend continues.

Tommy Ceez 04-07-05 10:27 AM

I cant name one black person on the 2003 Yankees.

Anyone?

UPDATE: Curtis Pride for a few games, and 50% of Derrick Jeter

DVDHO 04-08-05 06:49 PM

Berny Williams?he sure looks black to me.

Believe it or not, he's Puerto Rican.

I looked at the 2003 roster. I couldn't find any blacks on it.

This year there are several blacks: Sheffield, Tom Gordon, Tony Womack, & Jeter

By "Afro-Americans", I'm taking it that you mean "black", right? Or are you just singling out Americans with 'fros? And what about all those non-Americans on their (oops, I mean "there") roster, like Daniel Cabrera, Sammy Sosa and Miguel Tejada (Dominicans), Rick Bedard (Canadian), Bruce Chen (Panamanian), Jorge Julio and Melvin Mora (Venezuelans), Rodrigo Lopez and Geronimo Gil (Mexicans), Sidney Ponson (Aruban), Javier Lopez and Luis Matos (Puerto Ricans), and Rafael Palmeiro (Cuban)? Not many of them have 'fros, but quite a few of them are black and aren't clean-shaven, do they count?

If you mean "black", there are lots of "black" players on the Orioles' roster. If you mean Americans With Afros, I think you're probably right, though B.J. Surhoff wore a pretty bad perm back in the early '90s. If he were to revive that, he'd probably count. http://www.thrillnetwork.com/boards/.../afrosmile.gif

Too bad Jules isn't an Oriole...

So what was the point you were making again?

Most dictionaries answer this question...or isn't that what you were asking?

Jericho 04-18-05 05:59 PM

Less than 10% of major leagues are african-american, so I guess it's not much of a surprise. On an average 25 man roster, you'd only expect 2-3. I remember an article not too long ago about how the Blue Jays were supposedly getting rid of all their black players. Of course it was BS, but such is the state of blacks in baseball.
