Your most crushing loss as a sports fan
This is easy for me, as it will be for all the Minnesota-ins here.
The 1998 NFC Championship Game.
I'm STILL not over it. Whenever somebody brings it up or I remember it, it eats away at me and I get pretty angry. After the game it was REALLY bad. I don't know how I made it through the night
So I ask...what game was as bad as this game was for me?

For me it would have to be Astros-St. Louis this year. Other than that, when PC lost to Arizona in the NCAA tournament several years back. And I was pretty much shaking all night when the 'Stros lost.

Game 7 of the 1991 World Series.
It's not as crushing now as it was then, as the Braves have been successful ever since, and eventually won a World Series, but at the time I had no idea if the Braves were gonna go back to the playoffs, much less the World Series.

Game 6 - 2002 World Series. I got a score update before I left work that the Giants were up 5-0 in the 7th inning and were about to close out the series. I rushed home to catch the last inning or so to soak in win. 8th inning - Angels up 6-5. I went absolutely beserk. Dusty Baker may be a good manager in the clubhouse, but he makes a ton of really questionable in-game decisions. He replaced Russ Ortiz, an inning eater, after 6 scoreless innings with Felix Rodriguez, who pitched in the five previous games in the series and was probably dead tired. Giants lost that game and Game 7 after starting Livan Hernandez, who got rocked like crazy that year instead of their staff ace. What was really tough was that the team lost over what was very obviously poor managerial decisions.

Why are you setting yourself up for disappointment?
I don't think I have any particular game of disappointment. Maybe a playoff series, but not a single game.

At the time, it was Chris Webber calling time-out in the 1993 championship game against UNC. In retrospect - screw him. Asshole.
So I'll go with 1998 NBA Finals game 6, phantom foul called on Laimbeer on a sky-hook by Abdul-Jabbar to give the Lakers the lead over the Pistons with 14 seconds to go. Spoiled the incredible performance by Isiah Thomas . That one hurt more than "well it's a STEAL BY BIRD!" in 1987 or Colorado over Michigan in 1994 (Kordell's Hail Mary).

!975 NFL playoffs when America's team(Dallas Cowboys)cheated to win over my Vikings.Drew Pearson clearly pushed off Nate Wright for the winning TD catch. In the Cowboys highlight film from that season-John Facenda states-that the Cowboys outplayed the Vikings and deserved too win.Fine-sure---whatever.

A few and they involve 2 teams. There of course was the whole Buckner game, but I was pretty young and just starting to get into sports at the time, so not as crushing to me as the 2003 ALCS game 7. I was sick with a head cold as it was, in a bar with all Yankee fans and just sick to my stomach afterwards. The others basically involved FSU and the words "wide right". The names Thomas and Mowery will live in infamy and are my "Ray Finkle".

Probably the 2000 (i think) NHL Eastern Conference Finals where the Flyers had a 3-1 series lead and blew it to the Devils. In particular the game where Scott Stevens nearly killed Lindros. It was his last game w/the Flyers and I knew it was over for the Flyers and Lindros w/the Flyers. I wasn't sure if he would even play again after that.

Too many to count:
1. 2001 World Series Game 7: The Yankees HAD that game. Mo on the mound with a 3-2 lead. We had 2 outs too
2. 1994 NCAA Basketball Title Game: Duke loses to Arkansas: We had that game. What's worse is that I had Duke vs. Arkansas in my NCAA Tournament Pool and I would've won it all if Duke beat Arkansas
3. 1999 NCAA Basketball Title Game: Duke loses to UConn: Duke would've beat UConn 9 out of 10 times that year
4. Game 4 & Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS: The Yankees had both of those games too
5. 2002 Regional Semi-Finals: Duke loses to Indiana 74-73. That year Duke was stacked with Boozer & Jason Williams. They were up big in the second half too
6. The Year that the Devils lost to the Avalanche in the finals after being up 3-2. I'm not a huge hockey fan so I can't remember the year
There's a lot of others but those stick out pretty vividly.
BTW, I'm a NY Yankees, NJ Nets, NY Giants, NJ Devils, and Duke Blue Devils Basketball fan.

Retired
1989 Fiesta Bowl which was the national Championship game that year. WVU's QB seperated his shoulder on the 3rd play of the game, and they went on to lose to ND by 14 (or 17, I've tried to block it from my memory).

I think it was 2000 or maybe 1999 in the NFC Championship game the Buccaneers' Bert Emanuel catched the ball for a first down but for some reason the refs reviewed the play and overturned the call. The ruling was changed the following season it was always remembered as the Bert Emanuel call.
In the 1995 NBA Finals the Magic were up by 3 with Nick Anderson at the free throw line, he missed both shots then the Rockets got the ball and scored quickly. Nick gets fouled again and misses both free throws again. Hakeem Olajuwon tips in the ball at the last second to win the game.

Let's see, should I choose Jordan's Shot to defeat the Cavs, Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, the Drive, or the Fumble? Or maybe one of the thirty-two, give or take a few, late season losses by Ohio State which ruined any chance to play for the National Championship? I really don't know anymore.
