To Wave or Not to Wave

So I am old enough to remember when there was no such thing as 'The Wave' or at least it never happened when I used to go to baseball games as a kid.

I was in NYC last week.

Went to a Yankee game v. Texas and when the Rangers were at bat with a man at least on 3rd with 2 outs in a 1-0 ballgame(maybe the 6th or 7th innning)....a f****** wave in the whole stadium was in progress...wtf is that all about?

I hate the wave with a passion. I mean you are at a game, sit down, shut up and watch it.

I think Def's pointing out that when the wave starts, people stop paying attention to the game and start paying attention to their turn to stand up. In a blowout game, I get why folks do it, but not in a close one.

Me too Chris

What Def is saying, if I am right and totally agree, that the situation I was describing was not a blowout at all and people were waiting and talking about the wave coming around to them instead of what was going on in the game....

I don't think I was insinuating that people should sit down like it was a service at church...but anyone that has seen it live knows what I mean.

at the O's game 2 nights ago (Sat night) someone started the wave during the bottom of the 12th. It seemed to bring the entire crowd back into the game, and once it stopped everyone was still cheering, etc.

I can see how someone could consider it distracting, but after nearly 5 hours of baseball it seemed to revive the audience.

I've always enjoyed the wave. Sure I felt like an idiot doing it but it's fun. The last time I did one was at a Ducks football game. It's funny to watch it almost die when it makes it's way over to the other side of the stadium, away from all the students.

Since you are probably a Dodger fan, you have little chance to worry about that problem of Dodger home runs.

So getting up and acting like an idiot just to see the wave is fun? It's boring and it's a distraction to the game.

Exactly. Thanks for not putting words into my mouth. We were talking about the wave here folks, not general cheering.

Your right, lets laugh at the Dodger's (65) homeruns!

BUT while were at it lets also laugh at Arizona as well and their (70) homeruns!

Although, nothing really beats the two-headed wave. Where it's on opposite sides of the stadium going in circles together.

Come on, it's baseball. The wave could go around 3 times between pitches.

True, I mean in the whole 3 seconds it takes to stand up one might miss a crucial groin grab or tobacco spit

the wave is just plain dumb.
it has nothing to do with any game that it takes place during.
it isnt cheering for your team and it isnt booing your team.

if you need something to do during a game please find something to do up in the stands.
the wave is annoying.

last thing i want while watching a game is for people to keep standing up in front of me for no reason.

stand up and cheer when somwething happens like a run or a strikeout.

i try to get people in my section to not do the wave whenever it trys to get started in a game i'm watching.

luckily in phila we dont have to put up with this bull$#!^ very often.

at the reds/indians game the fans in a section over tried to start the wave. a guy from there came over to tell us when to do it, we boo'ed him. wave never got started.

the wave is cool if there is a long break in the game or if it is a blowout, but seriously it is the dumbest thing to do if the game is even somewhat close.

The fact that it usually starts at the worst times makes me hate it, even when it is started at a good time.
