I had to dig deep to find the truth behind their hatred of each other, but I found it.

Tony Mas was bitching about Curt going to Sosh. He's a whiny little baby who thinks players should only talk to the "real" media.

Schilling keys on ankle: Sox' cyberace deals with injury problem
By Tony Massarotti/ Baseball
Friday, June 11, 2004

And so on and on we go, from Trot Nixon [stats, news]'s back and left leg to Nomar Garciaparra [stats, news]'s right Achilles tendon to Bill Mueller [stats, news]'s balky right knee. Now New England can obsess over Curt Schilling [stats, news]'s right ankle, even as he continues to pitch like a true horse.

The Red Sox [stats, schedule]' best pitcher this season was back on the mound last night at Fenway Park, where the Sox generally clicked on all cylinders in a 9-3 win over the San Diego Padres. Schilling (8-3, 3.03 ERA) went seven innings while striking out eight and allowing two runs. The Sox are now 10-3 in his 13 starts but most of the conversation concerning the pitcher centered on Schilling's ankle.

Earlier this week, according to sources, the Sox cyberace visited his friends in a private chat room at sonsofsamhorn.com, where he revealed that one course of treatment for his ailment would be surgery. Schilling then stated that he had no intention of exploring that route, though he acknowledged following last night's outing that he would have surgery if this were the end of the season.

It's not.

So he will deal with it.

``I would get it taken care of,'' said Schilling when asked if a surgical ``clean-up'' of the area might be necessary. ``(Currently), I'm not sure there are any other options (than to keep pitching).

``I'm not sure this is a situation where you give yourself a lot of other options. Whatever we're doing right now (to treat the problem), it's working.''

Schilling seemingly regards the media with general disdain, remember, and he is on record as saying he prefers to deal with fans via chat rooms and message boards because it eliminates the middle man and prevents any distortion of his message. Yet Schilling can be prone to dramatization, as we have already learned, and one member of the Sox organization suggested yesterday that any reference to surgery was hyperbole.

Just the same, the problem bears watching. Schilling has been the team's most reliable starter to date, something that should not be overlooked given the struggles of the other four starters not so long ago. Both Schilling and manager Terry Francona said the matter was a ``concern,'' though Schilling obviously would not be pitching (and pitching well) if the problem were major.

``Everything these players do is a big deal and we'll treat it like a big deal,'' said Francona. ``Does that mean he can't pitch? No. I know when he's out there on the mound he does a pretty good job, but that doesn't mean we won't monitor how he's feeling.''

By his own doing, Schilling is a tough read.

During spring training, after Schilling ranted about the need for an independent third party in steroid testing, officials from Major League Baseball conducted a teleconference purely to shoot holes through the pitcher's assertions. MLB vice president Rob Manfred described Schilling's remarks as ``completely misinformed'' and ``caused by an ignorance of the facts,'' then pointed out that baseball already had third-party testing in place.

Still, however wild or dramatized the words that come from Schilling's lips or fingers - beware of carpal tunnel syndrome - the Red Sox need him for what comes out of his arm. Schilling said last night that his ankle ailment has not worsened since it began four or five weeks ago, and both he and the Sox believe there is no threat of further injury.

Said Schilling: ``If it gets to the point where we're damaging something, then we'll re-evaluate.''

At that stage, you can read all about it at bigtrouble.com.

It might not seem like a big deal, or even noticeable, but the jabs at Curt are completely unnecessary. If the purpose of the article is to report his ankle injury, why bring up that he "had disdain" for the print media? And is this even a story? He has a sore ankle. Its not a big deal.

This isnt the first time Mas has bitched about Curt going online instead of to the print reporters.

If you ever mention Minnesota again w/ the rest of those schlubs, I will repeatedly kick you in the nuts!!!

They need to get out of that shithole of a building, but the problem is their lease and the building isn't that old.

They could do a lot just by contracting Tampa Bay and Montreal. They are serving no purpose by continuing to let those teams operate.

actually.. the problem is that the owners dont want to pay for the new stadium

and the fans (all 10 of them) dont want a tax hike to pay for a stadium

so if the people of minnesota keep voting any plans for a new stadium... i think its safe to say that even if they dont get contracted, they will eventually be sold.. and i would guess sooner than later.

Yeah, they need an owner w/ deep pockets who will help privately fund a stadium -- like SanFran. St. Louis is doint this, too, though they did get some money from the state, but I believe they are putting up a large chunk of it.

sounds like the only way the twins get an owner with deep pockets (that is willing to spend)..

will be if they put a different city/state name in front

When I saw that he was posting there, and that they began to get press, I knew it would happen. I'm sure his being limited to a member's area now only made them madder. I know I was disappointed.

The Boston media just needs to dry up.

Question about hitting streaks. Let's say a guy who's on a 55-game hitting streak goes 0 for 1 and it starts raining in the 2nd, and the game gets postponed. Since it's not an official game, but stats count, is his hit streak over?

What if a guy goes 0 for 0 with 3 walks and a sacrifice in a completed 9-inning game? Is his hit streak over?

so if the people of minnesota keep voting any plans for a new stadium
The problem is... we don't get a chance to vote. There was one vote in recent memory and it was a 1/2% sales tax hike to go towards a stadium for the city of St Paul (which was shot down.) I don't live in St Paul, so I didn't even have a say in that.

If the people were educated on what exactly "helping" a team build a stadium would in fact mean, they'd be more willing. Instead we get these idiot politicians that only say "We won't line the pockets of a billionaire." It kills me how simple it would be to meet the Twins demands for a new stadium that would hardly cost anything (at least anymore than they already give to large corporations like Target, Northwest Airlines, etc.) Donate land, give interest-free bonds and the income taxes from players alone almost cover the difference.

The Twins drawing 20,000 per game is pretty good considering it's indoors on a 75 degree evening.
