The Cardinals and the Twins are only a game out of first in their respective divisions.

Cincinnati has the 2nd best record in baseball, despite being outscored by 7 runs. How much longer will they keep up the smoke and mirrors?

They'll fade after the break.

Agreed. It just isn't sustainable for 162.

Any idea how much of a hole they were in before they started streaking, in terms of runs scored?

This is really the right decision. Why take a Nomar well enough to play for the PawSox for another game when we can stack our line-up with the likes of McCarty and Kapler?

Exactly. Especially with the Pawsox coming up on a crucial stretch of games.

They've been more or less even in runs differential all year.

April: 107 RS, 113 RA, 12-10 record (pythag = 10-12)

May 1-13: 53 RS, 66 RA, 5-7 record (pythag = 5-7)

May 14-present: 106 RS, 94 RA, 17-6 record (pythag = 13-10)

Overall pythag = 28-29, for a +6 W-L differential in real life.

The Reds have gotten saves in 27 of their 34 victories. Their opponents have gotten saves in 10 of the Reds' 23 losses.

In 34 wins, their differential is +79, or 2.3/game.
In 23 losses, their differential is -83, or 3.6/game.

And if you want to look at 3rd-order wins using adjusted statistics (taking into account park, league and opposition effects/SOS), Cincinnati should be 26.5 and 30.5, which is a 3rd-order differential of +7.5.

And check out these numbers:

Overall:     34-23

1-run games: 10-7
2-run games: 12-2
3-run games:  9-3
4-run games:  2-3
5-run games:  0-3
6-run games:  0-3
7-run games:  1-1
11-run games: 0-1

Looks like a really nice day in Boston. I guess the Padres brought the great San Diego weather with them.

Go Padres!

Yeah, they just don't have the pitching to keep it up.

One advantage the Padres have in this game -- we have an AL pitcher AND catcher on our team who knows the Red Sox batters.

The Padres broadcasting team are up doing the game on the Green Monster today.

David Wells is a bigger advantage. He's always played tough against the Red Sox. And he just made Manny and Varitek look foolish.

Yeah, after I wrote that, I realized Wells is also pretty familiar with the AL and especially Boston.

A pitchers duel at Fenway tonight. No score going into the bottom of the 5th. Pedro's let up just 2 hits while striking out 6.

Pedro has been consistently been throwing 93-94. I hope he cured whatever was wrong before. Not facing Vlad helps, I guess.
