College Football Preseason SOS

http://www.nationalchamps.net/2004/sos/index.htm

Yes, I know this preseason SOS is pointless, but we need some football talk.

Click on the link for the remainder of the teams.

1. Arkansas 1547
2. Georgia Tech 1483
3. Virginia Tech 1482
4. Kansas 1479
5. Texas A&M 1478
6. North Carolina State 1468
7. Notre Dame 1463
8. Oregon State 1462
9. Texas Tech 1422
10. Florida 1382
11. North Carolina 1368
12. Vanderbilt 1360
13. South Carolina 1357
14. Clemson (tie) 1350
15. Florida State (tie) 1350
16. Northwestern 1347
17. Arizona 1337
18. Wake Forest 1323
19. Georgia 1322
20. Baylor 1316
21. Kentucky 1311
22. Virginia 1307
23. Michigan State 1280
24. Arizona State 1275
25. Maryland 1264

All 11 ACC teams are in the top 31. The ACC has improved dramatically even without the addition of Miami.

I was looking at Miami's schedule again yesterday and I have to say, outside of FSU and Va Tech, I really don't see a game that worries me. Not to mention both of those are home games .

Va Tech is probably going to be a bottom tier team this year. Clemson, @ Virginia, @ NC State(if they find a QB), and @ GT are all games that could prove to be very difficult for Miami. I would be much more worried about these games than the Va Tech game.

C'mon . . . when has Auburn ever gotten respect in the polls (not that this really counts )? Give it a game or two and we'll be back up in "the 25". A lot of offensive power coming back this year with much better experience. A few hits on defense, but a lot of good youngsters still around.

Edit: I just realized that this was the SOS list . . . I have to say that 32 is a bit of a surprise . . . loaded with SEC games and all . . . a welcome change, but a bit of a surprise nonetheless.

All this talk about Auburn just keeps reminding me how meaningless this list is. What were they ranked preseason last year? No respect?

West Virginia - A large buzz was created when Athlon Sports picked WVU as their #5 team. If we had 25 cents for every time the question "why" came up, arcade games could be free for the rest of our lives. So why? With 16 starters back, including practically an all-senior lineup at their offensive skill positions, and the 81st SOS rank, the Mountaineers play the weakest schedule of anyone in our Top 24. The toughest opponent is #19 Maryland in Morgantown, versus a team that has manhandled WVU the last four outings. Watch out Coach Friedgen! The entire Big East was decimated by the departure of Miami and Virginia Tech. In fact, on only three occasions since 1991 has a team other than Virginia Tech or Miami won the Big East outright (WVU 1993, Syracuse 1997 & 1998). You really cannot blame the remaining conference teams for their lack of a 2004 schedule while trying to piece one together on such short notice. But maybe, just maybe, the cause and effect of these departures could turn out to be the biggest blessing in disguise for a team like WVU in 2004. Burn those couches down in Sunnyside.
Should be a good year. The Maryland game will make or break the season for me, after getting killed by them the last three times (while I'm suffering at grad school at UMD) and dropping 4 straight overall I desperately want them to get revenge.

I was waiting for someone to say this. How can you have a SOS based on rankings which are based on, well, nothing but predictions of how good teams will be?

I'm just disgruntled that USC can go and schedule 4 perennial bowl teams in Notre Dame, Va Tech, Colorado State, and BYU and be ranked 64. I know it's preseason and meaningless, but it strongly reflects the end of last season.

I was speaking from more of a "historical" perspective. Over the last 10-15 years, Auburn has been treated poorly in the polls. Last year was a weird exception. They were ranked higher than they probably should have been in the beginning . . . the ability was there, but not the experience.

As for the discussion . . . it's never too early to discuss college football. Geez, I practically bought my Xbox with NCAA 2003 in mind to help me get through those last couple months before the season started.

It's a disease, I know, but if they ever find a cure, I don't want it.

4 "bowl teams" that are expected to have down seasons.. those games dont even compare to most teams conference schedule..
and then you have to take the weak pac10 into account

^ I don't disagree with the ranking, it's the system. The point is I'd say they tried pretty hard to put together a tough schedule. And of course it may completely flip flop, but it looks like they'll need to be perfect again this year. Which is fine. They deserve what they got last year for taking half a game off.

That's one of my biggest gripes about the current system. Obviously SOS is a valid criteria to use when ranking teams, however, schedules are made so far in advance, there's no way to make a guaranteed strong schedule. Teams are so up and down the teams that are winning 10 games win you schedule them may have had 3 straight .500 or worse seasons by the time you actually play them.
