I'd like to cast a vote in favor of getting rid of the AL East standings today.

12...at least.

But after listening to Boston Sports radio for about an hour, Im convinced that the Sox will finish in 4th place in the AL East.

If it wasn't for the weather it should be a great weekend at Busch. I might have to score some tickets.

Nice to see the Twins in sole control of first place.

Hope the Angels can continue to win. I heard Glaus and Anderson may be out for awhile, maybe even the All-Star break.

Cheer up Red Sox fans, here are the "adjusted" standings!

W, L : Actual team wins and losses.

RS, RA: Actual team runs scored and runs allowed.

AEQR, AEQRA: RS and RA, adjusted for league and park affects, and the quality of their opponent's pitching and hitting.

W3, L3 ("Third-order wins"): Pythagenport wins and losses, based on AEQR and AEQRA.

D3: Delta between actual wins and W3. Positive numbers mean the team has won more games than expected from their statistics.

Adding up the D3s you get a -5.4 for MLB. Does that mean baseball is playing 5.4 games worse than they should be, or that 5.4 games shouldn't have been played this year?

Meh...not much going on lately...

News and Notes

* The St. Louis Cardinals have activated OF Roger Cedeño from the 15-Day DL. Cedeño will most likely only see time on a situational basis, being brought in primarily when the team needs a caught stealing, strikeout, or complaint about playing time.

* After the activation of lefthander Casey Fossum from the DL, the Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to move struggling starter Elmer Dessens to the bullpen. Asked if Dessens might see future closing duties, D-Backs manager Bob Brenly replied, "Hello? He's been consistently terrible all season. Of course he will."

* Phillies reliever Roberto Hernadez, sidelined with a strained calf, threw off a mound today during a simulated game. He was tagged for 8 pretend runs, including three make-believe homers.

* Expos outfielder Carl Everett should be available to return from injury on Tuesday. He has been asked to meet up with the team in Puerto Rico, but has refused, citing that the small island nation doesn't really exist.

If we went with a straight Pythagorean or modified Pythagenport, we could expect the resulting Ws and Ls (which I'm not showing in the table) to balance out. But because we're using park, league and opposition quality, the RS and RA no longer add up, which therefore is reflected in the W3 and L3 columns and obviously D3. But what it does show is how lucky (or unlucky) a team has been, without factoring in all the extra garbage that always skews the neutral stats.

It also shows what the teams would be doing if they all faced identical opposition. That's not real life, and so that's why many of these columns no longer add up.

A good example is Minnesota, whose RS and RA have been positively affected by being fortunate enough to play against crappy teams/pitchers.
