Thurman Thomas arrested

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) -- Former NFL running back Thurman Thomas was arrested over the weekend and charged with marijuana possession, according to police.

Thomas, who was in town to play in a charity golf tournament, was arrested at the Grand Hotel around 2 a.m. Saturday.

He had one partially smoked marijuana cigarette in his possession and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or marijuana, Fairhope police spokesman Cpl. Craig Sawyer said Monday.

Thomas did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press Monday. His wife, Patti, said her husband was "caught up in an uncomfortable situation with a couple of his buddies."

"Basically, what he has said was some other guys were with him and because it was near his room, he got caught up in it," Patti Thomas said. "He's not claiming any responsibility for it."

Thomas, 37, was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor reserved for people who have the drug for personal use.

Thomas was booked at Fairhope City Jail and was released in time to play his round of golf Saturday morning.

"There was no disorderly conduct or belligerent behavior, and he did not resist arrest," Sawyer said. He said no other arrests were made.

In 13 seasons with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, Thomas rushed for 12,074 yards and 65 touchdowns. He played in four straight Super Bowls as a member of the Bills, from 1991 through 1994.

Thomas was a five-time Pro-Bowl selection and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1991. He was a star at Oklahoma State before his pro career.

Last year, he admitted to being a recovering alcoholic and said he had spent 28 days in a rehabilitation program in Minnesota.

And yet Montell Williams can brag and boast that he smokes Mary Jane's and the cops won't even arrest him!

Because for all of the talk... they can't make the arrest for possession until they actually see him with pot, and arrest him.

No, there's somothing in the media that likes to broadcast their legal troubles.

The guy puffed a joint! C'mon, he's not even a current player! Personally, I don't even think it should be a crime, but even if some of you disagree, it surely shouldn't be newsworthy.

Reminds me of an old MadTv skit where it was "gentically proven that when black people came into large amounts of money a part of their brain which controls common sense would deactivate allowing the black person to do things they normally wouldn't do." They had black people walk it to a room with drugs, hookers and other vices and they would turn it down initially. But then the black people were given large amounts of cash and there were different results.

Arrested in his hotel room for smoking half a J? That's so very sad.

Our tax dollars hard at work protecting us from Thurman Thomas and his Spectravision!

What's up with pro athletes using illegal drugs and alleged rapes? I don't think it's a big deal personally(marijuana) but it's a funky pattern . Why can't they stay in their $600 a night rooms and play Playstation 2 or order some adult movies on the PPV in the hotel room.

It's always baffled the hell out of me why they couldn't retrieve him a replacement - or hell he should've just tried stuffing his head into Andre Reed's small helmet after Reed was ejected (which btw was unneccesary). All b/c of the Norwood curse ....
