Deftones, I had this ready to go, but wanted to wait til it was Brandon Webb's turn in the rotation. Great stuff on the REAL Rookie of the Year.

Free article from Baseball Prospectus on May 4th, so I'm not breaking any rules posting this.

There are groundball pitchers, there are Groundball Pitchers, and then there's Brandon Webb. From the moment he was called up from the minors last season, Webb has become the premier sinkerballer in the league. His 3.44 G/F ratio last season was second in the majors behind only Derek Lowe; this year, his ratio of 3.82 dwarfs that of any other pitcher. No other qualifier has a ratio above 2.5; Lowe, who has too few innings to qualify, is only at 2.76.

But Webb has something going for him that Lowe doesn't: He's also a dominant strikeout pitcher. For his career, Webb has 203 whiffs in 217 innings, or 8.41 per nine innings. Since entering the rotation full-time in 2002, Lowe is only at 5.00 per.

Put the numbers together, and you find that over his career, Webb has gotten only 14.7% of his outs through the air, the lowest number of any active starter. When you consider that G/F ratio, according to Nate Silver's research, is the single best predictor of how many homers a pitcher will give up, Webb should be the toughest starting pitcher in baseball to take deep. And sure enough, he has allowed only one homer per 15.5 innings in his career, despite pitching in a fairly good home run park.

Over the last 20 years, the number of pitchers who fit Webb's profile--a power pitcher with a high G/F ratio--is very small, and includes such luminaries as Greg Maddux (in his prime) and Kevin Brown. Long-term, there might not be a safer pitcher to bet on than the Diamondbacks' #2 starter.

Now maybe someone can help me on something that ive been wondering for nearly 15 years. (seriously)

Who do you think is the best starting pitcher pitching today? If you could pick 1 from each league, who would you pick?

The reason I ask, is because in the Boston Herald, they always have a baseball schedule just like at the top of the thread. At the bottom of the schedule, which includes pitching matchups, they always have this:

BEST- (pitchers name)

Now I would assume that they are picking the best pitcher for that day. But almost always, they pick somebody who obviously isnt. For instance, today in the AL, they have Ainsworth as "BEST". Do they really think Ainsworth is better than Schilling or Hudson? Do you have any idea what this is all about? Its been like this for at least 15 years and I have never figured it out.

I guess they mean "today's best bet to get a win"???? Even still, Ainsworth isn't even close to a best bet to get a win today. I'd certainly go with Schilling, Hudson, Oswalt, Colon, Webb over him, and probably half a dozen less certain guys as well.

But on the other hand, Westbrook is winning with smoke and mirrors, and maybe that's their thinking (but I doubt it). In 27.1 innings, while he's only give up 16 hits, he's walked 9 and struck out only 14, and BP vets know that a 4.5 K/9 doesn't bode well for future success. So maybe Ainsworth wouldn't be such a bad bet, but he isn't that great either.

Strange.

Oswalt is listed as BEST for the NL

But it looks like two votes for "The Boston Herald is on crack"

It's about time he got his props. He's been one of the most consistant pitchers over the past year, yet nobody talks about him. Mark my words, he will win a Cy Young in the near future.

Could we get Bonds to take a day off? I think a day on the bench will really help his sinus infection.

Kthxbye.

on the results from yesterday. Did anyone else notice that the Expos drew over 5000 people at home? And they said baseball would never sell in Canada

That's what I thought too, but I'm not so sure.

When the official home attendance at Padres games is listed at the stadium for completely sold out games, it's still under 42K. A fully sold out Petco Park (including the $5 SRO/picnic tickets) is 46K. So unless the Padres are giving away 4000+ tickets, or it's not based on tickets sold. I figured the team would have some promo tickets (players, team, etc.), but 4000+ seems awfully high. Maybe they're not counting the SRO/picnic tickets as official tickets to the game, but that seems silly too? I'm there watching the game live inside the stadium, aren't I? So at least with the Padres, I don't know how they're counting attendance.

Also, I know that (not too many) years back, one league counted tickets sold, and the other counted turnstile clicks. Not sure if that was standardized or not.

Problem it, he's getting the props he deserves on less popular saber-crazy sites like BP. He needs to get the props on things like SportsCenter.

And unfortunately, since those awards are based mostly on hype and semi-worthless stats, like W-L and ERA, I don't see a Cy Young in his immediate future.

Not much news, but:

News and Notes:

* Braves LF Chipper Jones will come off of the disabled list today after recovering from a hamstring injury. The Braves will make room on the roster by placing LF Chipper Jones on the 15-day DL once he reinjures his hamstring in tonight's game.

* Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Todd Hundley confirmed that he will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair torn cartilage in his hip. The former all-star has already missed every game this year while recovering from a back injury. Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said Tuesday's surgery should also finally confirm his suspicion that Hundley is a 12-year old girl.

* Placido Polanco, Phillies 2B, was placed on the 15-day DL after straining his calf running out a ground ball in Friday's loss to Arizona.

In other Phillies news, manager Larry Bowa has asked 3B David Bell to focus on hitting more ground balls.

* Diamondbacks 1B, Richie Sexson, insists that he will be available to return from a shoulder injury in a week, well ahead of the team's original 4-6 week timetable. Sexson pointed out that his swing is pain-free as long as he doesn't make contact, placing him at about 95% ready.

Great ones, today, MD, especially those last two!

David Bell was certainly one of my finalists at 3B for this year's Hacking Mass competition, but I'm glad I didn't pick him because his numbers are fairly respectable so far. Fortunately, I went with Mark DeRosa instead, so I'm looking great at 3B anyway.

I'm confused by Bell. His hitting has been better this year, but he's almost matched his error numbers from last year in 1/3 the games. It's always one or the other for him.
