Giro d'Italia - The First Grand Tour of the Year (2004)

Well, its time to start paying attention to cycling again. The first Grand Tour of the year starts tommorow, and I was wondering if anyone else was planning on following it this year.

I was just looking at the course map, and it seems to be loaded with mountain climbs. As someone who thinks that the mountain stages are, by far, the most exciting, it should be fun to watch.

Even though the "Posties" won't be competing, I'll still be watching (if only to see who pushes themselves too hard, thus assuring they will flame out of TdF. )

OLN is showing live feeds:

Weekdays, 9:30-11am ET
Weekday Repeats, 1-2:30pm ET
Tape Delay Weekends, 3:30-5:00pm ET

Finally there is a lot of great coverage at Daily Peleoton

Tivo is setup with my Season Pass. Very much looking forward to it.

Simoni has to be a top choice
however I am a huge Garzelli fan.

And Cipo had a nice warmup session in Georgia, but I think he'll be dominated by Petacchi.

I'd like to see Cipo do well and win a stage or so for Il Pirata, and give it a good run for a top finish (and not abandon), but defending champ Simoni seems to be the overwhelming favorite. I suspect that we'll get a run for a couple stage victories from Pettachi and possibly McEwen.

The Mortirolo climb on stage 19 has been renamed the 'Montagna Pantani'.

Ullrich and company won't be there as Telekom T-mobile is concentrating on TDF preparations.

I have my Tivo recording for wish list of "Giro" (Record all episodes, Keep until I delete) and that seems to have worked perfectly. The title of "Bicycle racing" brings a lot of stuff I didn't want.

[Edited to add: I see BDB posted while I was writing this. ]

Glad to see people are interested in the Giro! I'll probably be getting up early (6:30 my time) to ethier watch it live, or an hour or so later on tape.

I'll post anything spectacular in SPOILER boxes of course, but I do have one question.

Should "Liggetisms" be SPOILERIZED or not. I personally think they should be talked about ASAP. But thats just me talking.

Also, on the weekend shows, since they are already taped delayed, should any discussions about the race be spoilerized after the show airs, for the TIVOing amongst us?

We tended to post results in spoilers for the Vuelta, which actually got to 57 posts (though 56 were from me, BDB, BigDave, and Quake1028). Most folks either watch the delayed feed "live" or the live feed TiVoed. Either way, it was usually after work-type hours.

For effect, put things like (which is visible in spoilered posts) just to keep folks curious.

At least you didn't follow BadlyNamedThread's example and make this thread "Giro d'Italia - The Italian Tour De France".

Porthos, are you in Texas?

Yeah... I saw that thread last year.

Nope.... I'm in good ol' Kal-i-forn-i-a. Sacramento to be exact (hence I'm in LeMond country).

As I said, I was going to spoilerize posts, With emoiticons of course.

I still want to know if "Liggetisms" count as spoilers or not, however.

As for who will win, I have a soft spot for Gilberto Simoni. And Cipollini, although I can't say I like his attitiude much.

Hey... I wasn't hatin' on ya BDB.

Anyway... I just went back and checked, and the person I most want to do well is Pettachi. He really impressed me last year, and I kind took a shine to the fella.

My Tivo crapped out on me Thursday, but I'm ready for the grand tours with ~110 hours of Tivo.

I lost all the spring classics.

Did y'all see the video of Cipo at the Tour de Georgia? He was off the back and on a climb. Cipo pulls over and kisses this guy's girlfriend and he's all "Cipo, you rock!"

No surprises so far, Petacchi takes the 1st bunch Sprint.

Prologue was short and to the point. McGee has the pink from the prologue win and then loses it today.

Was out all day, so watching it on tape-delay.

on Petacchi. As I said, I really like his style. Pity about McGee, though. And at least Cipollini wasn't wearing the same hideous outfit as he did in the prologue.

That was a great stage a sizable break got away with pretty much all the Saeco boys protecting simoni.

And youngster Cunego winning the stage ahead of Brad McGee who is back in the pink.

Garzelli and Popovych stayed with the group and finished at the same time as simoni

And another great stage last night.

Everyone in it right till the last 3k, when cunego has a go, and simoni just cruises past and wins the stage by 19 secs.

He's in the pink now, and from yesterdays stage unless stefano or popovych step up its his to lose.

the one person I was impressed with and he also impressed me last year was pellizotti (sp) he was pretty much there all last year and again he was over the line after simoni.

well played. Of course extreme Tivo padding is needed for this, yesterday I padded by 1 hour, and basically got the ending with between 1 and 2 minutes to go.

so I am now up to 1.5 hours padding.

Yup more padding needed tonight. I don't know why.

Another sprint finish tonight and
Spoiler:

deja vu for Cipo with a fall in a rainy finish

I always pad 30 minutes, but that didn't work for Simoni's win.

Yesterday's finish was quite exciting. I can't imagine going 40+mph on slick roads.

Yup dave you need to be Padding a lot...

I have 1.5 hours just to be safe now.

Its off season for all other tv so nothing much else is taping, plus the 105 hour tivo is well able to handle it.

Yeah, I have the space now, so I guess I'll have to pad more.

Bunch of lolly-gaggin' cyclists causing me to miss the finish. Ride faster dammit!

Its been a quite exciting race so far, or maybe that's just the commentary style of the boys, they so love the racing and get so worked up over it.

Petachhi got squeezed out yesterday so it was left for any others and Brad mcGee stepped in and took the win

Simoni and Cunego were looking like they were thinking of the win for a while.

Phil and Paul are an amazing duo. It will be a sad day for the cycling community when they retire.

Yesterday's stage was finished pretty quickly. I guess they listened to my request.

The weekend racing done, and Cipo is out, the crash he had was too much, so he did not start sunday

the mountain stage on saturday was very tense, with Cunego taking the win, Simoni led him out, and it enabled Cunego to get the pink jersey, It was an excellent climb. Simoni looks very very comfortable, in fact he looks as comfortable as Lance looks in the TdF.

Garzelli will have to pull something special out to gain back the minute 10 he is down so far.

and my dark horse Pellizoti is sitting nicely
