Let's see, I talked shit about each of the last two D-backs pitchers and they both owned the Cubs. I hate you Elmer Dessens!

OK, since Mad Dawg is dropping the ball, I'll fill in as best I can. Hard shoes to fill though.

MLB News and Notes: 06-May-2004

* Arizona Diamondbacks rookie pitcher Casey Daigle pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, leading to his first major league win. The win marks the second win in a row for the D-backs, prompting team representatives to take up a full page ad in Thursday's edition of the Arizona Republic to announce that a celebratory parade will be held Saturday afternoon in Downtown Phoenix.

* Mike Piazza's first inning solo home run against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday propelled him into first place all time for home runs by a catcher. When pressed for comment, Piazza quipped, "This achievement feels good. It ranks right up there with me taking over the league lead in ownership of tight black fishnet shirts." Piazza recently took over this record from fellow New Yorker Derek Jeter in August 2003.

* The New York Yankees have demoted starting pitcher Jose Contreras to single-A Tampa to work on his mechanics after getting shelled yet again last night.

"It'll be about a week, to work on mechanics," manager Joe Torre said. "I fully expect the 29 31 34.. ahh hell whatever year-old starter to be back with us real soon."

* Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Jose Valverde has been given the closer role over Matt Mantei and has responded well with two scoreless saves over the Cubs this week. Ticket sales for outfield bleacher seats at Bank One Ballpark are considerably down and are now being offered at discount prices due to a significantly decreased chance of catching a home run ball at a game.

The Red Sox won yesterday, so I thought Mad Dawg was going to do it today.

I wasn't aware the Red Sox's performance was the motivating factor for MD

Why do you think everyone has been in such a bad mood lately?

Yep, no news and notes.

At least Derek Jeter still sucks. That's always a plus.

Haha, it's working! D-backs up 3-1 over the Cubs!

I shouldn't be laughing quite yet. It's not the 5th inning. Dessens will probably give up 6 runs that inning

I'm sure EVERYBODY already knows this by now but ...

... the Pitch-By-Pitcher interface at SportsLine.com is awesome. So much better than ESPN or Yahoo or MLB's GameCast.

bahahaha

Corey Patterson just got picked off on 1st when 2 were on and no outs. That gave the D-backs the momentum to get out of the inning w/o allowing any runs.

Dessens is the greatest pitcher of all time. Dessens's number will look good retired. Dessens should start thinking about which cap to wear for the HoF. I sure wish I was Elmer Dessens.

Cubs 1st and 3rd no outs, and Dessens gets out of the inning, no runs scored. You know your team is going bad when Dessens is rolling.
